Studio Ghibli Collection

Who's been collecting them so far. I have picked up every release so far and I'm really looking forward to seeing Porco Russo, I absolutely love that film. I'm impressed Disney has secured such high talent for the english dub rather than just using unknown voiceover artists. It's strange to hear these characters voiced by familiar voices such as Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Crudup, Kirsten Dunst, Phil Hart etc. We all know Miyazaki is the REAL draw but it's still nice to see Disney using A-List talent on these films.

Is there a better version of Totoro coming this year?

So far I only have Nausicaa and Spirited Away and Mononoke, but they are brilliant.

Totoro was supposed to be the third film in this current trio, but legal issues trying to wrestle the film away from Fox were gumming up the works too long for Disney's tastes. So we got The Cat Returns.

The hope is, Totoro will be in the next collection. Which is almost definitely going to include Howl's Moving Castle and a nice, obscure third title (Whispers of the Heart, Only Yesterday, Our Neighbors The Yamadas)

As for me, I just loaded up on Miyazaki this past week....now the only one released here that I'm missing is Mononoke (because Spider-Sense tells me Disney's gonna double dip that film in the near future)

Unless they give Mononoke a five star star set of extras, i'd suggest just getting the one that's out now. it doesn't seem likely.

I've got all the Ghibli region-1 releases except The Cat Returns (including Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro). I certainly hope they release Disney's Totoro with Howl's Moving Castle... I'm guessing that will be in August or September, considering the theatrical release schedule. Fox's Totoro is an abomination.

What about Castle of Cagliostro, are Disney planning on giving that a release or are the rights tied up with another company like Totoro?
Cagliostro is not a Studio Ghibli film, is it? Miyazaki did that one before he set up Ghibli, I think.

btw, those of you who have the US Nausicaa disc: I heard a lot of complaints about the transfer. is it really that bad?

It's certainly not the sharpest transfer around, but I was never distracted by it while watching the movie. The colors all seemed fine. It was my first time watching it, and I was sufficiently blown away by the visuals.

Second time watching for me (a friend loaned me a Japanese region free version about a year ago).

Basically, I think it looks as good as it can for a 21 year old piece of animation. That still doesn't mean you won't notice how tarnished it looks in spots.

It's not end-of-the-world horrible, though.

I don't understand why Castle in the Sky doesn't get more love.
It gets sweet loving from me all the time. i prefer Kiki though. i am waiting very. patiently. for totoro and nausicaa and porco to be released in England though. I've never seen them.

I also have love for Castle in the Sky...I still call it Laputa despite the spanish fury.

Sweet little cartoon that I watched when I was kid, and then rediscovered and loved even more.

Trin (Andrew??) can I just ask what Ghibli films are out in the UK for purchase aside from Monokoke, Spirited Away, Kiki, Castle in the Sky and the hideously price Graveyard of the Fireflie. As I am thinking of upgrading my collection.

Just those and Cagliostro. I'm scared of watching fireflies because it's meant to be SOOO sad. i still cry at ET so i'm afraid i won't survive.
It is the most depressing anime ever made....and with a price tag of £35 without any discernable features it is indeed a DVD of true despair.

Will have to give Caligstro another go, watched it during my 70s and 80s manga period with Space Adventure Cobra and Golgo 13 and never really got the animation style...

The one thing about Nausicaa that I don't like is that the American cast credits are now a part of the opening credit sequence. It's not a "pure" transfer anymore. I don't watch anything dubbed, so this is just not right in my opinion. it would have been better if they were tacked on at the end. But other than that Nausicaa looks beautiful. I also love Castle in the Sky, it's a great story. Fireflies is utterly depressing and I can't imagine anyone wanting to see it more than once.

Agreed, GOTF is a extremely sad film in my opinion and I've yet to see it since my initial viewing. I haven't picked up The Cat Returns or Porco Rosso yet, but plan to do so as I've got everything else, including Castle of Cagliostro as it was a Miyazaki film. If you look at the Lady Clarrise, she is the spitting image of Nasicaa. I am very much looking forward to Howl's Moving Castle. I viewed the trailer when it was released, but never noticed it in a local theater. Very disappointing as I was wanting to at least catch at least one more Miyazaki flim other than Mononoke in the cinema. I was a little let down that Totoro wasn't in this recent release, but I have faith that Disney will get it soon and it will be out in the next release.

Real sneaky, Disney. Real sneaky.

My Neighbors the Yamadas

Pom Poko

Granted, these two are pretty low profile releases compared to Nausicaa, but I didn't even know these were coming until YESTERDAY, fer cripes sake.

Flying low... under the raidar... it's more STUDIO GHIBLI.

I still haven'y picked up the last wave, but I've already got all of this stuff from an import collection. But the US releases will be in the collection someday.

Pom Poko... aka Raccoons with Balls. (to me at least!) Ha ha ha!!!
