Clone Wars DVD: Volume 1

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet or not, but all 20 Chapters have been edited together into one 60 minute animated movie. Pretty cool.

Some of the edits are seamless... others, not so much. Still, it's cool to be able to just sit back and watch the whole thing non-stop.
Great, I was hoping they did that for the dvd.
Glad they did. What about those extras? Anything drool-worthy?
Although Chapters 3 and 4 are reversed, timeline-wise.

(...saith he who knows intricately from the greater chronology of Clone Wars events...)

But it likely won't bother most folks.

The are 2 separate Audio Commentaries, 2 featurettes, the ROTS teaser trailer, and video game trailers. That's about it.

But the "Bridging The Saga" featurette is pretty cool. It focuses on how Volume 2 (or, Season 3) of CLONE WARS is basically animating the opening crawl and leading right up to the beginning of ROTS and there are a few seconds of the space battle footage from the movie that people are going to drool over.

All in all, it's a solid DVD.

By the way, gotta love the WWII Flying Tigers-inspired Gunships that will be seen in the new chapters:

I'm confused... CLONE WARS V2 leads into ROTS... but so does LABYRINTH OF EVIL...

Does CW kick off where LOE finished? Or are they both different approaches to the same concept? And is one of them more official?

To be honest, I'm not entirely clear on that either.

But knowing LFL Licensing's continuity and editing people they will do everything possible to ensure that neither really contradicts the other.

I believe the cartoon is going to focus more on Anakin and Obi-Wan's adventures together than the book did, though. That and it will include lots of the beginning of Grievous' assault on Coruscant, which was basically only presented from the POV of a handful of Jedi and senators in the book.

Lucas did have a lot of personal input on BOTH "Labyrinth" and the next set of "Clone Wars", however, so it would be very strange if there are any major discrepancies.

This concept is going to be popular with customizers, if it isn't already.

Isn't there some Revenge of the Sith footage on the DVD as well? How was that?

What did you think of the picture and audio of the DVD? I haven't watched them in a while now because I've been holding out for this DVD. I just hope everything looks great.

It's the space battle footage I noted above. It's short, but good.

Terrific. And in Anamorphic Widescreen.

Awesome, thanks, CC.

The gunship is the best star wars vehicle toy since the AT-ATs and Snow Speeders. I had to break down and buy one from AOTC. Looks like I shall have to nab another.

Rad, my drummer just got a widescreen TV, it's huge. I know where I'm taking this DVD when I get it.

Carl, did I ever mention that you're the luckiest bastard in the world?

Just got this, watched it today. The ROTS footage is beautiful. Just stunning.

The toon' picture and sound is top notch too. A bit of awkward editing to tie some episodes together here and there, but it's still absolutely great.

It will truly be laughable when ROTS does not win the Oscar for Best SPX this year... especially given the winners in recent years. It doesn't have much of a shot, though, given the completely politically-driven awards climate now. Oh well.

The Oscars are a farce!

I have that little clip of the space battle from the DVD, it cracks me up how the guys on the commentary ohh and ahhhh at it.

I would just love a Star Wars Wind-Waker style video game based on the Clone Wars cartoon designs. It just begs to be translated that way. Anyone agree?
Damn, I'm doing my data entry job just waiting to finish up so I can go and buy Clone Wars......
So far I'm about ten minutes in and totally not into it. Tell me it gets better.
I bought the DVD around midnight. I still think it's too heavy on action and light on plot, though it definitely becomes quite a bit more cohesive around halfway through. I was really impressed with the editing, as a good 80% of the time I couldn't tell where one chapter ended and the next began. However, the instances of "jumping around" stand out quite a bit. Do I really need to see Kit Fisto on Mon Calamari when I've just spent ten minutes with Obi-Wan? Also, Durge seems so incredibly pointless, and almost laughable when stacked up against Grievous.

I love the animation. The 3D models fit in particularly well with the animation and give the whole thing a very three-dimensional look.

Obviously the first season was released now to pump up the new one and the coming film, but I'm disappointed they didn't just wait and put the whole Clone Wars saga on one disc. Using up a DVD for an hour worth of feature just seems a waste and a money-grab. If they are really going to go on producing more clone wars cartoons after ROTS, my hopes of having a single Clone Wars disc will surely be thwarted.

Have you gotten to the ARC Troopers stuff? The first chapter is by far the weakest of the entire bunch.

It does get better, especially the last 20-30 minutes.
Yayyy, done work. Clone time!
Some old lady comes to the counter and asks if there are any more copies. The clerk asks me where I got mine. I tell him it was the last on the shelf. Lady gives me a dirty look. I feel fucking awesome.

10 minutes in and I'm totally into it.

I don't know -- the Kit Fisto/Padme to the Rescue chapters were pretty weak.
Damn, this sucka is loud!

Love it. Great stuff all around. I had never seen the Yoda/Padme episode.

Love it when Anakin says, "I have you now."

Love the Gamorean baddie.

Just finished C.W. Volume I - all-in-all, great stuff. I am very happy that all 20 eps were edited together nicely. I did not notice the timeline reversal on the two, and was very happy to see this in widescreen.

I got it yesterday. I think it does get better, the ending duel between Anakin and the Sith apprentice on top of the pyramid is cool. And I love the cliffhanger ending.

I thought this was a really cool DVD. I know my nephews'll love it.

I also thought the X-Box game looked cool (Republic Commando, was that the name?).

'Tis a pretty good disc. Any Easter Eggs?

I've only found one, and it isn't very exciting. Go to the Options menu and then press "11" (1+ 1), "3" and "8" (just like the other SW DVDs) and then some standard DVD credits plays. No bloopers this time, for obvious reasons.

There are also two different types of menus, one with heroes and the other with villains.

Any chance Volume II will be out before ROTS? Or will I be forced to download them?

Download them or watch them on Cartoon Network. They likely won't be out on DVD for a few months unless a surprise announcement occurs.
I enjoyed this a lot more than Episodes I and II.

Agreed!

Some of the saber fights weren't as fluid as I'd have liked, and I still think the "prequel universe" kinda sucks, but a lot of the designs and ideas were really great. The Mace Windu sequence blew me away.
It amazes me how much more I get into these emotionally. Especially the way Tartakovsky uses music and images instead of dialogue. The scene at the beginning (it was the end of the first chapter originally) where Anakin and Padme look at each other through the window with Across the Stars playing was so much more poignant than anything in AOTC.

I thought the Anakin/Assaj Ventress fight was really cool and neatly stylized, particularly at the end.

I also think Chapter 21 is the best "Star Wars" anything I've seen since EMPIRE. Not hyperbole. I'm serious. The Jedi knighting sequence couldn't have been done better.

As far as the "prequel universe", I know what you mean. But I find things like the Clone Wars 'toons actually help me appreciate that particular era. I also like how they're handling the Dooku character. He's much more interesting than in the films.

And the parallel action in this to the OT is both poignant and, again, better than what Lucas did. When Anakin says "I have you now!" I mean, that's so fucking genius.
The Ventress fight was well executed, but none of the saber fights have the flashy whirling motions, more instantanous thrusts and slashes. A minor complaint, really. Some great use of the Force on display through the whole series.

It's not just Dooku -- all the characters are more interesting. Sort of a shame they couldn't get the real actors, but after 5 minutes I couldn't have cared.
The only thing that bothers me are all the little nods to OT quotes. They're only there to get laughs out of fanboys.

"DUDE HE JUST SAID IMPRESSIVE MOST IMPRESSIVE SNORT HA SNORT."
Yeah -- i think there was a contractual obligation that everyone had to say "I have a bad feeling about this." Numerous times.

Whoever does the voices of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon (in Chapter 21) are pretty much spot on, imho.

Incidentally, Anthony Daniels actually does C-3P0 in the show, but he sounds even less like the actual character at times than others.

I'm with Dellamorte on the two Anakin/Vader quote references. Those were great. But, yeah, they've gone a little overboard at times. Especially in Chapter 22, when Obi-Wan says "What an incredible smell you've discovered" as they were trudging through the sewers. That was too much.
Just watched the DVD, having never seen them online.

It had its moments, but also had its misses...like anything with Padme.

And jousting? JOUSTING?

And lightsabers getting stuck, by the blade of all things, in something?

But it definately had some good parts.

Question...there's 3 seasons before the movie opens, and we're just starting season 2 now? Or is it already done, and season 3 is about to start?
The DVD is Season 1 and 2. Season 3 has just started.

I thought the one bit that felt out of place [but it's good] was the guy at the start of Episode 22 talking smack about the jedi, and then his exchange with the droid.

Love the season 3 stuff though.

That guy was as un-Star Wars as they come. Good thing that part was actually pretty funny or it would have been terrible.

Wat Tambor also had his debut today (ch24).
