Brothers in Arms post-release...

Okay, it's out. I've read a few reviews, saying it's great(other than some minor problems). The E3 demonstration from one of the Xbox demo discs pretty much blew me away. How is it? Also, how's the multiplayer?

Rented this tonight...man even on easy I'm getting my ass kicked and I'm obviously an awful tactician because my entire squad keeps getting mowed down by machine gun nests or blown to kingdom come by mortar fire. This is far better than any of the other "historical shooters" that have come out recently...the squad based comebat is a nice change o fpace and there are subtle things like mud flung into your eyes by bullets kicking up dirt. also they like to say "fuck" and "shit" a lot.

I haven't been able to play this yet as I've been stuck up here in D.C. for 10 days for work. I'm jumping out of my skin.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with the D.C. Metro area. I quite like it, actually. It's just that I am am up here working 4-5 days a week (away from home and family) and that can become a grind.

Well, that and the snow. We've been blanketed here for the past month... and it's snowing like a bastard again today.

Yeah it is!! WTF! It was 70 degrees here yesterday....LITERALLY!! What happened???

This is historically inaccurate, as people did not shit back in the 1940's.

But yeah, I'm going to snap this up when it comes out on PC next week. Maybe relying on gamespot isn't a good habit, but I haven't been burned yet.

Almost Rented this today, but I backed out. Now I wish I hadn't. I'll go back and pick it up some time soon.

This has to be one of the shortest games I have ever played. I thought I was at the halfway point, and then the damn credits start showing. The game was over. It was quite fun though.

Did anyone else that played the Xbox version have any trouble with bugs? The machine gun fire sound would get stuck and would keep going off until you died or beat the level.

Damn, even if it is short, isn't there a decent replay using different strategies?
I ordered this the other day, I'll get back with my impressions.

I'll be honest, I don't mind a short game or two every now and then. I get so many that I sometimes cannot handle the backload unless I can go through some of them pretty quickly. I'm more than fine with this game (and REPUBLIC COMMANDO) being considered "short... especially since BROTHERS IN ARMS is based entirely on true events and went for authenticity over all else.

By the way, the game is spectacular... by far the best WWII game released for any console.

This worth picking up for PC?
i would say yes....after seeing the short bits i have from my roomate playing....i can imagine the PC version being exquisite.

No, they didn't shit.

Forget it, it was a stupid joke.

This game is awesome. I played the multiplayer with my brother last night and had a lot of fun. There are some glithes though. A couple of times when I was an Ally I talked with a German accent.
It's got some cool stuff but I don't think it's quite worthy of the hype. The "strategy" element is really clunky -- most of the missions I just let my guys get wiped out by halfway through, and then I just complete the mission solo. Their best purpose is for distraction, and since they show up again after they get killed anyway, why bother trying to keep them alive? Some of the level design isn't too great either, and the "battlefield awareness" is kinda useless and just kills the immediacy of the experience. And I can't decide if it's the writing or the voice acting that's awful, but it's definitely one of them.

Call of Duty remains at the top of my WWII gaming experiences.

That's not a glitch, that guy was a spy. You were supposed the drop him where he stood.
That's what I did. Or tried to do
Yeah, I got the endless machine gun glitch also. When it first started, I was spinning around trying to find out who the hell was shooting.

Because it's a squad based game. A draw and challenge of the game was you being responsible for your squad and completing the mission. It becomes any other war game if you just decide to go it alone. Actually, it probably a little easier because you actually have bait to give the enemy to make sure that you have the easiest possible approach to the enemy.

I got this about a week back, beat it on easy, working on normal difficulty now. It is a cool game, I wish it were longer(maybe had a bit more leading up to the battles, like walking halfway through a stage, THEN being ambushed).
Still though, I wish it had a bit more of the Freedom Fighters thing going on. By that I mean those guys would follow you anywhere, never get stuck, climb over stuff, etc. Meanwhile the guys won't even follow me upstairs, and I can't climb over anything. All n all, great stuff, but yes, it's overhyped.

Remind me never to let Dave be squad leader.

It's funny because to me, the essence of this game is just that -- trying to keep your squad alive. I don't think of them in the abstract, as pixelated video game characters there to enhance my god-like warmaking ability, but as living, breathing, comrades-in-arms, men whose lives I'm responsible for. I kinda thought the whole point of the game was to put you into that mindset, to give you some small taste of what it's like to order a man into the line of fire. If one of my guys dies I actually feel kinda guilty. Could I have covered him better? Did I risk his life unnecessarily? What price do I want to pay for this victory?

Obviously I realize it's just a video game, but (at least for me) it forces me to look at my tactical decisions, makes me want to think smarter, makes me want to bring all my guys out alive. I also can't fault the level design, since they are based on their real-world counterparts in great detail.

I think it's a great war game, one that helps remind jaded gamers that there aren't any health power-ups on the battlefield, and that fighting men are vulnerable, and that, regardless of the mission objective, your real objective is to help keep the guy next to you alive.

WWII Quake this ain't.

I thought it was pretty decent. As a relatively recent convert from all PC gamer (I got tired of having to update the ol' PC), controls are just not as intuitive as I'd like. I say that for all console games. Keyboard and mouse just seem so much easier and maybe because I'm not lounging back on the couch, it seems more immersive by comparison. Anyway, I agree that most of the fun in this is keeping your squad alive.

I've been a sucker for FPS's but outside of Clancy's R6 franchise and branch offs (Ghost Recon), relatively few even offer squad control. In those, (outside of the most recent GR) you are best served planning their movements out ahead of time but you'll inevitably get some of them killed as the AI is just plain stupid. I like being able to issue commands on the fly here and your squad is pretty smart. They'll hide behind cover and covering fire is just that. I also enjoyed the timer created on the enemy letting me know when I could advance my men and how effective the covering fire was. It offers a much more realistic engagement for me.

Some things I didn't like were the freaking god awful map thingy you could bring up. The camera angles on that were way screwy to me and I thought it would have been better served to have just been in plain ol 2D, like I was looking at something the battle planners would be looking at. I always ended up having to try to see my squad and targets through brush/trees and had a hard time controlling the zoom features. I'd end up flying all over the map and finally I just quit using it.
