Old school games on next gen systems

I was just reminicing with a friend the other day about our Road Rash marathons back in the Genesis days. There have been a few awful attempts to update the game since, but nothing ever showed up on the current generation of consoles. Road Rash 3 was pretty much the pinnacle, and the franchise slowly faded into mediocrity and obscurity after that.

I'd love to see this game show up on Xbox2 with Live support. 32 riders racing on huge, winding, linear tracks, flying off of insane jumps, crashing spectacularly into oncoming cars, and beating the shit out of each other with chains and bats. Or make it more of a persistant GTA style world, where you can explore and engage in races whenever and wherever you want. Just go for a joyride with your friends, have stunt/jump contests, or team up to beat down rival motorcycle gangs. The possibilities...man, I want to play this right now.

What other old favorites deserve a next generation update?

Interstate 76 god dammit...give it some x-box love with some Live enabled nirvana for good measure. cars with guns never gets old. hell, I know some people still playing twisted metal back at home.

Streets of Rage. I'm willing to forget part 3 ever happened if this game gets done right on a next gen console.

I'd say Battletoads too, but, oh, wait, Rare sucks now....

I'm not knocking Phantasy Star Online, because it really is a fun game in its own right, but I'd love to see a real Phantasy Star sequel in the old school RPG mold.

The Phantasy star Trilogy that's supposedly coming out for PS2 sounds kind of interesting in the meantime though. I say "supposedly" because it keeps getting pushed back and pushed back some more. Now it's supposed to be coming out in may.

Thank the gods that there is someone else out there that appreciates this game as much as I do.

Technically, the story ended with PS4, with the root of the evil that kept coming back as Dark Force being eliminated. PS Online was their way of adding on.

As for PS Trilogy, it's been pushed back, tentatively, to May 3rd. It's being done the same way as Megaman Anniversary in that the games are being remade and released separately in Japan, while we get the compilation. And it seems they're having some issues porting PS4 for some odd reason.

Either way, i hope they take their time.....PS4 was the game that got me into RPGs. I'll be severely pissed if they screw that one up.

I've been waiting for a Bionic Commando sequel for over a decade now.

A sequel to Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross is a VERY close second.
A proper Ghosts N Goblins.
We got a Pirates! update, so I'm a happy man.

Streets of Rage would get my money, though, good call!

That would do it then. I played the second one and didn't finish, never played the third one, and got the fourth one used for $6 at one point (even back then it was a killer deal) and never finished, so the whole story preogression is lost to me.

I also hope they take their time with the collection for the Trilogy. I'm VERY interested in how it's gonna turn out and I can't really imagine how they could screw it up too much, but i they "tweak" the gameplay too much, it's possible. Just update the graphics and sound and let the old school gameplay speak for itself.

I find it a little funny that they're leaving the third game out of the trilogy, and putting in the 4th, but it works. The 3rd game had a completely different tone.

I have the GBA Phantasy Star Collection, which has ports of 1-3, but I haven't done much with it yet.

I'm still waiting for a good Ninja Turtles game.

Karate Champ, I'm waiting for you! BEGIN!

Streets of Rage is a great suggestion. That was another great time-sucker back in the day.

Yep. Greatest game ever.

"Interstate 76 god dammit...give it some x-box love with some Live enabled nirvana for good measure."
Hell, just give me a version that is playable on Windows XP........
Maybe it's not old school enough, but i've been waiting for years to play a new Zombies Ate My Neighbors game. Classic.

But a new Bionic Commando game would be the tops.

Mutant League Football and Hockey...best sports games ever.
How about a proper Contra game with a story and Metal Gear Solid type gameplay. Even a fps Contra would be cool.
I'll second or third the love for Interstate '76, but more than anything I'd like to see...

WING COMMANDER

or, better yet,

TIE FIGHTER.

Yeah, I'm a space geek. Sue me.
Bionic Commando is a great choice.
I'd like to see a new Tecmo Bowl, but not sure if it could be done without becoming NFL Blitz.
I'd like to see more old school games return as side-scrollers, 3D is all well and good, but I miss them. I mean side-scrollers that have graphics that drop jaws.
And more old school shooters reborn. Ikaruga is great but I want more, like maybe R-Type or Gradius. Legendary Wings, that game rocked.

Oh no I hope they never do that. Contra is all about shooting shooting shooting. I never played the newer Contra games, but I heard the only thing holding them back(well holding back the good one), was that it was terribly difficult.

Heck no. Konami got it right the first time with Shattered Soldier. No need to go screwing with the formula. It can only lead to trouble. And that trouble's name is Neo Contra.

Your wish is granted.

Also, if you're *really* desperate, you can hunt around for Gradius III & IV. Depending on where you find it, it can be anywhere from 6 bucks, to the full $50.

Damn, I was telling my girlfriend the other day about how excellent "Streets of Rage" was.

"Castlevania" could use a "Resident Evil" in the Victorian era upgrade. "Duck Hunt" would be a helluva first-person shooter.

The N64 games had this vibe in more than a few levels. Lotta people hated those two games. I personally liked em. But then, I'm a Castlevania fanatic.

I was kinda under the impression the Deer Hunter games were carrying on that tradition.

Then again, it just isn't the same unless there's an annoyingly bulletproof asshole of a dog taunting you if you miss.

this is the best suggestion in the whole thread. keep it 2D just like the "faithful" Castlevania updates.

Hell yeah, that dog was a bastard!!! Anyone remember Solstice for the NES? That game was a bitch, and gave my young mind massive headaches. I'd figure they can make it even more confusing, with better graphics.
We seriously need a new BaseWars. It was the only baseball game I really enjoyed.
Wizards & Warriors (never played the third one, but part 1 and Ironsword were awesome)
Ikari Warriors
Legendary Wings
Blaster Master
A Boy And His Blob
Bonk's Adventure
Keith Courage
Actraiser
Chrono 3 (seems to be the popular choice)

Also, I would love a Castlevania turn-based FF-style RPG.
Final Fight would be fun
Archipelagos
Blood Money
Dungeon Master
Fiendish Freddy's Big Top O' Fun
Flashback
Full Throttle
It Came From The Desert
Lemmings
Maniac Mansion/Day Of The Tenacle
Out Of This World (a.k.a. Another World)
Punch-Out
River City Ransom
Sam & Max
The Journeyman Project
The Killing Game Show
tecmo bowl would be great but it probably would turn out like blitz, I love Madden but wish that every once in a while you could pull off that long Bo Jackson run.

Also, Nba Jam, had to be the funnest basketball game ever and probably best arcade only closely followed by Mortal Kombat.

There's some great stuff on this list. Damn I loved Flashback and Out of This World, those were such great games. River City Ransom is worth owning a GBA for(it's all prettied up and flicker free!).
I would also like to see some of those old non-Star Wars Lucasarts games be remade(wasn't Loom one? Am I getting the name right? It was in the same vein as the Monkey Island games, but in a fantasy setting).
Oh and a few more Rare games, such as RC Pro-Am, Killer Instinct(the 1st one, I hated KI Gold), Blast Corps(does N64 count as old school yet?), annnnnnd the amazing Snake Rattle N' Roll(a game I truly loved but no one seems to remember).

You're right. In The Secret Of Monkey Island, one of the pirates in the SCUMM Bar is a LOOM shill.

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes.

I wouldn't mind a Grim Fandango part Deux.

We already have Crimson Skies and a handful of other flying games for x-box live, but...

I'd easily throw some money for Tie Fighter or X-Wing vs Tie Fighter action with the chud clan...

Great pick. I'm not too sure I'd keep it 2D, though.
It seems when they do a 3d beat and smash at best we get Brute Force at worst State of Emergancy
post #42 of 46
Flashback was a great choice. If it was updated the way Prince of Persia was updated.. it would be awesome.

Just thinking...this all might be a case of "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it." That Narc remake that's about to come out just looks awful.

On the other hand, while it wasn't Streets of Rage or Final Fight, the demo for the now canceld (due to the Acclaim shutdown) "The Red Star" was looking like a pretty fun 3d beat-em-up. http://xbox.ign.com/objects/568/5683...?ui=gamefinder

Amen. They need an updated, 3D version of these games. Imagine all the fun to be had playing these games on a PS3 or XBOX next.
I picked up a copy of Road Rash Jailbreak for my ps2 the other day (its a playstation 1 game). It just didnt rock as my as Road Rash 3.

Agreed on Day of the Tenticle, and some love for the Disworld games or Starship Titanic. Any game that has John Cleese as the voice of a bomb that you can only deactivate by typing "Nobody likes a smart ass" gets my vote.

Final Fight

Super DodgeBall

Splatterhouse
