In the Mouth of Madness

This is a film I have always liked since I saw it on my 12th Birthday way back in 1997...just a wonderfully creepy and macabre tale which in my opinion is second only to the Thing as John Carpenter's greatest work. Only now am I starting to appreciate some of the more amusing elements of the story, such as the numerous Lovecraftian touches and quite a dark sense of humour. But I think this was one of the better horror films of the 1990s....then again these are the comments of a person who was scared shitless by Event Horizon so that may lose me some credibility....

So what do you all think of In The Mouth...

I personally love this flick...Nothing creepier than the scene with the old lady and her husband, naked and chained, to her ankle...*shivers*

That image of the guy on the bike has haunted me for years. I freak out whenever I pass a bike at night. I think this movie was on Chud's 'Movies that Deserve More Love' list, was it not?

I love this movie as well.

I hadn't seen it in a billion years and i rented it from blockbuster...who only had it on VHS format. lol.

That movie is great.

probably the closest lovecraft adaptation out there. bothered the shit out of me. i've always found horror movies like this (dealing with the unknown) much scarier than any of the nightmare on elm street/monstor of the week bullshit.

the only thing i'd like to know about the movie is why did everyone have identical axes?

Last time this movie was brought up on these boards there was hate spewed everywhere.

But for me i saw it just after i discovered Lovecraft. so it holds a special place in my twisted little heart.
I found it was the only lovecraft inspired movie i've seen done right.

Cause lets admit it, the transfer to the bigscreen is hard with this kind of stuff. So as an homage its great. while Dagon and the Dunwich Horror come off as bad Monsters/Tales from the dark side episodes

I love this movie, though it's probably not in my top 5 Carpenter films.

Carpenter's last film worth watching.

What is it exactly that you consider 'done right' about this movie concerning Lovecraft? I don't get it. I'm a Carpenter fan and consider this film to be near the bottom of his work in terms of effectiveness. Also, I've read every peice of fiction Lovecraft ever wrote and I found this movie to be almost completely devoid of any of what I consider to be great about Lovecraft. So I guess if saying I thought this movie was bad is "spewing hate", then I spew wholeheartedly and with great vigor.

I can agree that THE DUNWICH HORROR is a pathetic movie, I can't agree that DAGON is. In fact, if you watch the scene where Ezra Godden is in the hotel and the IMBOCA (In mouth in Spanish) townspeople are trying to break into the room, it's perhaps the most sentence for sentence accurate adaption of any of Lovecraft's work to date (that work being SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH).

I would check out the THE HAUNTED PALACE (also known as EDGAR ALLEN POE'S THE HAUNTED PALACE). It's a fairly accurate retelling of THE CASE OF CHARLES DEXTER WARD. What I assume is Cthulhu is pretty underwhelming but the rest is somewhat dead on, including the malformed children of the townsfolk. Also the Night Gallery episode of PICKMAN'S MODEL is pretty good also, in terms of being creepy and in being accurate.

So while I can't say I was a fan of IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, I do think there have been some decent adaptations of Lovecraft. It's kind of funny that my favorite of the LOVECRAFT movies, FROM BEYOND, is close to being the least like the story itself.

I like it a lot. Probably my second or third favourite Carpenter movie. Every time a thread comes up about it I always say the same thing about it. It's good.
I just wish it would come out on DVD in Aus.

when i saw in the mouth of madness, i thought the movie was "fucked up" in a good way. still i ponder on this movie and how crazy and confusing it was. i enjoyed it very much and i might rent it again to get another feel on the movie.

I can't really respond to this, other than saying our tastes differ. I wasn't looking for a word for word translation. I was looking for a feeling or a translation of mood. I love the town and the coming darkness. We don't really want to see the Cthulhu style monsters. They're best left to the imagination.
Dagon tried and during the night scenes it did a fair job. But mostly it just looked like a made for tv movie. Its not their fault i'm sure to get funding for a lovecraft movie must be a bitch. You need a big name behind the directors chair like Carpenter or DelToro pushing for the product.

I thought this flick was awesome. Loved it. A true horror movie without a happy ending - much like Carpenter's The Thing and Prince of Darkness (another terrific ending - and I always wondered what is was like on the other side of that mirror!)
Sam Neil laughing in the theater as (as we can only imagine) total chaos and violence erupts outside, is great.

Her name is Pickman.
A nice little reference to Lovecraft´s "Pickman´s Model".
