hmm if they are doing a remake of the first 3 you would think they would add 4 too the set as well.

My understanding is that it is more of a reboot than a remake. Normally that would sound silly, but in this case I don't think it does. As some have stated on sites or in other boards, there has always been an epic scope hidden within these films that has been held back by the budget constraints that Coscarelli had to deal with. It's also not hidden knowledge that he has cut a lot back in terms of writing the ones we have. My guess is that he sees this as his chance to remake the series into what he had always originally envisioned it being, with some of the same cast reprising their roles as well from the sound of it. The scope of this series was always meant to be more than what we have seen thus far, and it looks like we might finally see it as Coscarelli had always intended. This fact alone is why I am not against this project as much as other past or pending remakes. If New Line gives Coscarelli the producer reigns and lets him run with it in terms of story, casting, and creative control, we could really be in for something special.

My main point: If what we are reading is true, this trilogy seems more like a 2nd chance than a remake.

Hell, maybe now Universal will get off their asses and put 2&3 out on DVD finally.

I've never seen a Phantasm film. Should I wait for the new ones?

^^^^

No, the first and second films in the series are great, low budget, atmospheric films. Flying silver balls, evil dwarves, The Tall Man, etc.

Don't miss em.

I'm interested to see what Coscarelli will do with a bigger budget though. Fingers crossed.

No. At least rent the first two. If you love those, then of course watch three and four.

It now seems folks that this new trilogy won't be all that new after all. From what's being said now, the first film will be some sort of odd recap of the first few films, the second will apparently be based off of the Roger Avery "Phantasm's End" script, and the third an as yet unwritten series conclusion.

Basically, Phantasm 5-7 is what we may be seeing, which makes this even better! It seems they really meant it when they said this was a series reboot NOT remake.

I was bored over the weekend and ended up during a Phantasm marathon. It definitely amped up my anticipation for this trilogy even more. I just hope my excitement won't end up being a mistake.

yeah it allways felt like 1 and 2 had this huge back story going on to me too. Then the movies went to shit with #3.
