Worst OXM demo disc ever?

A five minute Jade Empire demo that only lets you fight through a single wave of enemies.

A surprisingly boring Area 51 demo that's not even a quarter as exciting as the previous demo. (The entire level is pretty much squinting and shooting up or down through a mess of catwalks. Yawn.)

And that's it.

Bullshit.

Crap. I was really looking forward to the Jade Empire demo.

Yeah, same here.

And see, I'm sure the combat in that game is gonna be really deep and rewarding, but when they just plop you down into battle halfway through the game without even explaining what the buttons do, it ends up turning into a button-masher. And I know that's not reflective of the final product (at least, I hope), but that's definitely what the demo is. And it's a very slow, very awkward button masher.

Kind of a baffling move on Bioware's part.

On the plus side, the Area 51 demo just saved me fifty bucks. Sigh.

You guys are lucky, mine doesn't even work... imagine my face when i plopped in a demo disc to a game I've been wanting to get ever since it was announced and be told there was a problem with the disc. I've been in a shitty mood ever since and even with your glowing recommendations for the demo i still want to play it.

Damn. That's disappointing, especially given the titles involved. I feared that OXM would become lazy with the death of the superior XBN. Is this our first sign?

There's supposedly a thrid, hidden demo according to the packaging. Don't know how to access it or what it is though.

Otherwise - yeah, sucks.

Well, I'm still too busy playing the Chaos Theory demo to notice.

I've been wondering this for a while... could someone post the "boiling Xbox discs" theory? If it's beyond a theory, please do tell. I've had discs(demos in particular, such as the one with the 1st Conker demo) not work, and I was wondering if this method works, and if so, how? thanks in advance.

Um...you put the disc is a pan of boiling water for a few minutes. Dry it off, let it cool, toss it in the Xbox, and it'll usually work. It's pretty much exactly how it sounds.

That's the case with all those stupid hidden demos. I don't know why they make you input some ridiculously long controller sequence rather than just making it some kind of on-screen easter egg.

Yep, though I think you take it off the heat as soon as you put the CD in. And it definitely works.

Because the hidden demos are always fucking terrible. They're either low-budget games that have been out in stores forever, or they're incoherent Japanese games that haven't been translated yet. And yeah, unlocking them is always a huge waste of time.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I spent half an hour trying to unlock the demo on the one issue I bought. I probably would have been more pissed to find a shitty demo as my "reward".

So, is this magazine even worth it?

I just put my subscription for this in the company mail today. Sounds like the demo discs are pretty bare, and there are problems with them as well.

What do you think? Should I rush to get the envelope out of the mail, or is it worth the 24.95 fee?

It's a shitty magazine, but I'm a subscriber for the demos. A lot of the discs are spotty, but there are always two or three really great demo discs each year that make the subscription worthwhile.

The magazine is ok. The reviews in general never mean too much, but it's still nice to have a magazine with a demo attached. I just wish subscribers would get the nifty plastic cases for the demo that are available on news stands. I kind of dig the little info nuggets on the bottom of each page. I'm more likely to go through the whole magazine and read them than I am to read anything else. I flip through and check out what interests me and glance through the reviews and that's about it.

My subscription is almost up and I may not renew, but Slater is right... every now and then you'l get a disc that really is worthwhile. I've been having trouble getting the demo discs to work lately myself, but haven't boiled any yet. I've got the most recent one but haven't even tried it yet.

The hidden contenet is silly. they should just make it accessible from the get go if they're gonna even bother at all, but I do have to admit, the demo for the US pres./killer mech game was kind of fun. I hear this recent one might be an MTV Music Generator demo or some crap like that though... Bleh!

I like the magazine well enough, there are usually one or two good in-depth previews per month, some good reviews (they may be overly kind to some titles, but I have yet to see a gaming magazine that isn't), and the demos can often rock.

well im sorry to hear that the jade empire demo wasnt too good (havent gotten my copy yet)...and im surprised to hear the bad scores for area 51. after reading the march opm review which got me all fired up, that was a surprise. guess we'll see.

was there anything else on the demo?

My displeasure has been growing with OXM for some time now...between the demo disk(s) including useless crap such as movie trailers, to the seemingly growing amount of ads, to the nonstop ass kissing of Halo 2 (which was a good game, but compared to Half Life 2 - just a good game, IMO)....

....my latest issue did not even have the disk in it.

For my money, I really love Game Informer, which is ironic since I am more of an EB kinda guy. To be fair to OXM, when you can only talk about Xbox games, it has to be tough to fill a mag every month on just one console.
