The whole Project Greenlight thing was a mess from the start. Firstly, they specifically said that they wanted horror scripts. I actually entered one of mine. As a result of entering your screenplay, you had to read other submitted screenplays. Holly shit, how many NON-horror scripts did I have to read!?
I contacted Project Greenlight when I came across my first non-horror script and they said that I still had to review it because they were taking ALL submitted scripts. So this tells me that Matt and Ben were using us writers and directors to find something they were looking for. So they got us to do cheap (free) labor.
And for a contest looking for a horror script, why were the other two candidates NON-horror scripts?
Was "Feast" the best horror script in the contest? No. But it was a hell of a lot better than most. I actually got to review "Feast" and gave it rather high marks. Trust me, when you've read a polethera of bad horror, this screenplay was wonderous.
There were two other horror scripts that were what I considered the best. One was "Dust and Bones." This was actually my favorite. Kind of "The Thing" meets "The Old West." I don't even like westerns. The other script was "A Night in Defeat." It was almost simular to "Feast" but it was about bounty hunters tracking down Vampires. Even an Elvis impersonater gets involved. Reminded me of "From Dusk Til Dawn" but with more comedy.
I for one am glad that the Dimension suites forced them to choose "Feast." And I'm also glad they picked John as the director. Is the guy weird? Sure! Does that mean he won't get the job done? No. How many movies do we go see just because so and so directed it? 98% of the time I don't care who directed it.
Nevertheless,it looks to be a fun ride. Can't wait to see who they actually cast. I do like John's brother, not nessisarily for beer guy, but one of the other parts for sure. Oh well.
