Sin City DVD

Some early details on the Sin City DVD from Robert himself:

My issues with some of his films aside, his DVDs have always kicked major ass, especially in the educational department. This looks to be his gold standard set.
That's great news. As much as I thought that the movie kicked ass, I really wanted to see some of the stories (especially That Yellow Bastard) fleshed out a little more. In some instances they had to skim over some major story elements (like Hartigan's parole board hearing) just to keep the movie going. It'll be great to see them back in.

The release date is August 16th.

DOUBLE FUCKING DIP

some bullfuckshit

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced a barebones release of the Robert Rodriguez directed Sin City, which stars Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen and Brittany Murphy. The film, based on a series of graphic novels created by Frank Miller, will be available to own from the 16th August this year. Retail will be around $29.99. The film itself will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen along with both English DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. No extra material will be included.

Guess we'll be waiting awhile for that Sin City Breakfast Taco recipe.

There are going to be four different slip covers for the Sin City DVD.
Collect them all! Then buy the double-dip down the road.

Think i'll wait for the actual release
Bump.

It's already on sale at Forbidden Planet in NYC (Union Square). Got mine last night for $24.99
post #11 of 52
I'll buy the bare bones, thats fine, then I'll probably just trade it in at Gamestop later when the SE comes out.

Though I'm starting to question my need for owning SE's since I rarely get into or enjoy all the "special" features. Maybe I'll start sticking with the bare bones releases instead.
the future shop (best buy company) i work at is giving away free sin city shot glasses with each purchase. they're pretty good lookin'
Got it yesterday. Chose the Marv slipcover.

And yup, the disc is barren, the behind the scenes featurette aside (and if you picked up one of those free preview discs from Best Buy back in March, it's the SAME ONE)

The good news, however, is that the disc looks and sounds AMAZING. As in you've got a chance to show off your home theater setup amazing. No surprise in terms of video, considering this was all shot on digital. But with the audio.....damn. Marv's voiceover alone made stuff fall off my bookshelves.

It'll tide me over until the two-disc. Then, it'll be sold. Plain and simple.

EDIT: Almost forgot.....the layer switch is in an awesome place.
An....awesome layer switch?

There exists such a thing?

That's odd. I usually end up watching all the special features, and never get around to watching the film.
I'll wait for the "grande" version myself.
Yeah - people either are into the special features or they definitely are not.

I'm waiting for the Special Edition.
Interesting bit on IGN, watch the movie with Austin fans reactions.......probably from the Drafthouse.

Quote:
The real DVD should come out fairly quick, [and] it's the one that will be obviously the double-disc set with all of the goodies on it. I mean, it has all kinds of stuff on there - I have a 20-minute Film School, a new Cooking School, Sin City Breakfast Tacos, and my favorite feature: when people watch DVDs, they complain 'oh, the only thing about home entertainment is you miss that audience experience.' Well, the best audience is in Austin, especially for a movie that was made there. We showed the premiere with the actors there in a 1500-seat theater, and they would go crazy and Sin City got a big reaction. I recorded the audience in 5.1 so if you're watching the DVD and you want to see it with an Austin audience on premiere night, you just click a button and they're all there going 'aaaah!' so it's really cool.

Quentin, when he was directing his sequence, he just let the tape roll when we were shooting, and the sequence taped for an hour, so there are some 20-minute uninterrupted takes. You see him wander in front of the camera and talk to the actors, and [he's] directing and you hear the whole sound of the set. It's like you're sitting right there on the set seeing the movie being shot from the point of view of the camera that's shooting the movie, uninterrupted, and it's really cool. You feel like you're right there, and you get to see what it's like to work with Quentin and the actors and how the movie actually gets made. [And] he will do a commentary on his section.
This is gonna be a very expensive 4 months what with this, Kong, this summers releases and a load of classic WB titles hitting shelves.

I think I know the route I'm going to take for the SIN CITY DVD. Knowing the special edition is coming soon I'm going to hold off on buying the barebones version next Tuesday. After about 4-6 weeks a place like Hollywood Video will probably sell them used. I'll grab one of those and hold onto the receipt. You can always return the used discs with the receipt for your money back. Once the SE comes out I'll take back the barebones disc. Done and done.
You tricky bastard. Use the system, don't let the system use you.
They have to have some kind of limit on how long you can hold onto it before returning........

Plus it'll be kind of fishy when you do it right when the SE hits right? Also, anyone else thought this was gonna be 3 discs?
Yep, I'll definitely either be online renting or store renting the first release. My wife still hasn't even seen the movie yet.

I believe the time limit is one year on bringing the used discs back. But as long as you have the receipt they will refund the used ones with no questions asked. I'm pretty sure the SE will come out within the next year. If it doesn't then yes, my plan will explode in my face like a giant fireball of stupidity.
The way they are showing how the film plays out in the DVD commercials? That's how they should have pushed it when it was in theatres. My fiance is actually interested in seeing it now. As are a number of other people that really didn't care about it before.

Some more from Robert on the Sin City SE:

http://dvd.ign.com/articles/641/641160p1.html

The Cooking School will be "Breakfast Tacos".
I prefer pizza for breakfast, but I'll take tacos. With lots of black olives.
So I'll just Netflix this DVD and buy the real version when that comes out.

Because the first release is simply smoke and mirrors....

It'll be real enough for me to watch a few times. But it does seem like a product that defines the term 'planned obsolescence.' Or perhaps its main purpose is to be the rental version, meanwhile fans of the special edition will have to buy it outright. For example, every rental joint I know of carries the theatrical cut of Daredevil only.
Does anyone know when the double-dip is supposed to happen? I want to wait for it, but at the same time I'm a little worried that when the SE comes out, they'll drop the DTS track in order to fit all the special features on it, as so often is the case. If I have to trade a butt-load of special features that I may not watch for a kick-ass DTS soundtrack, I'll pick up the bare-bones release and be done with it. If they keep the beefy soundtrack, however, I have no problem waiting a couple of months or so for a better release.
I rented this last night from BBuster using one of my monthly free coupons I get from their website DVD service. What I noticed was, on my receipt it says, "Own it for just $11.70 more!". Which means, I'm assuming, that since I didn't pay the $4.29 for it because of my coupon, I can essentially get it brand new for $12, while they're selling new copies in the store for $21.99. I'm not going to do it, because I want the SE, but as mentioned above, if it doesn't come with DTS, I'll get a used copy of the barebones. I just though that was interesting, though. I should've paid more attention to my rental of Madden 2006 to see how much more that would've cost.
I did the same thing only I can own it for the spectacularly low price of $33..........

I saw a used copy of Sin City at Hastings for $14.99, but I held strong for the SE.
The Fry's ad today had SIN CITY brand new listed for $13.99. That's pretty darn low but I'm still gonna hold out for a used one I can easily return.

First details on Sin City: Recut and Extended. The extended cut of the movie will run 147 min. Looks to be a cool set.

I'm glad I waited.

The new package is too tantalizing to ignore.
I still dont regret owning the barebones version. As I've said, it'll just get the Ebay treatment come December.

That said, thank Christ I stopped myself from buying the Hard Goodbye graphic novel like I intended to when I got my most recent paycheck.
Now that I have a date I can sink my teeth into I will refrain from even buying a used barebones disc. That package is stacked! But it does look like I should put my "Hard Goodbye" TPB on Ebay.
I'm wondering if this isn't the last release.

What happened to the "you'll be able to watch the different stories by themselves, but extended".

I don't care, I always planned to trade the barebones in for game credit anyway when the annouced double-dip arrived, just didn't feel like waiting till what seems to be December 13th now.
I'd say they'll be seperate judging by the second print advertisement which states "The Recut Version in 4 Seperate Stories"

The Hard goodbye Included, neat.

Not. It's a bullshit excuse to jack up the price another $15. One would think the target market for the double dip is the nerds who are into the Sin City stories in the first place and already own all the books. I really hope they release a cheaper version without the book.

Yeah I agree. I've already got all seven books, not really interested in another one, especially one with the newfangled spine and title. Granted, the book would be a good gift to a Sin City deprived friend or something, but still forcing us to buy it is rather lame.
On that note, I'm sure the DVD itself will be fantastic.

That's kinda like saying the only people who'll enjoy the LOTR EEs are Tolkien fans.

Fact is, if including the graphic novel gets 10 more people hooked on Frank Miller's work (which is likely will), its inclusion will have been made worthwhile many times over. If you've already got it, just give it to someone who'll appreciate it. But don't pretend that Sin City purists are the only ones who'll be buying this set.
The 2-disc SE has been announced...looks pretty sweet.

From the Bits...

Quote:
Some news from around the Net today... Buena Vista and Dimension have finally revealed that the Frank Miller's Sin City: Recut & Extended Edition will street on 12/13 (SRP $39.99). The 2-disc set will feature the theatrical version of the film along with a new 147-minute extended cut, both in anamorphic widescreen video (1.85:1) with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio. Extras are set to include audio commentary with director Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, a second commentary with Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, a third commentary containing the Austin Premiere crowd's reaction, 12 behind-the-scenes featurettes (15-Minute Film School with Robert Rodriguez, The Movie in High-Speed Green Screen, The Long Take: 17 Uninterrupted Minutes of Tarantino's Segment, Sin City Night at Antones: Filmmakers, Cast & Crew Party, 10-Minute Cooking School with Robert Rodriguez, A Hard Top with a Decent Engine: The Cars of Sin City, Making the Monsters: Special Effects Make-up, Trench Coats and Fish Nets: The Costumes of Sin City, Booze, Broads & Guns: The Props of Sin City, How It Went Down: Convincing Frank Miller to Make the Film, Giving the Characters Life: Casting the Film and Special Guest Director: Quentin Tarantino), the film's teaser and theatrical trailers, an outtakes reel, the Sin-Chroni-City interactive game and the complete Sin City: The Hard Goodbye graphic novel. Now THAT'S the DVD fans have been waiting for.
Sounds like a tremendous release. And I got the bare-bones dvd very cheap. When it was released I found a coupon I had for $10 off anything at FYE when I spent over $30 on some specific weekend. They had it for $19.99, plus a $7 rebate, so I ended up paying $3 for Sin City!
I was just wondering if anyone had picked this up. If so, thoughts?

I was pretty much sold when I heard the announcement, but now I'm having second thoughts due to price, packaging, etc. Also, I read on www.DVDtalk.com that the majority of "extra footage" is actually credits. I mean the extras seem wonderful, and I'm jazzed to see Marv pick up his gun from his mom's house(one great little scene from the graphic novel), but still...

My local Hastings has two copies for rent, and both were still on the shelf. I think I'll wait a bit and see is I can pick one of their rental copies used like I did their Titanic:SE. I'm not a cheap-skate or anything, I'm just tired of paying $10 extra for special features. (War of the Worlds *cough*)
Yeah it's apparantly about 8 actual minutes of new footage.

I watched the extended cut and it does indeed feel like 8 minutes, not this 20 min. they boast. The extras are pretty great, most of it with an intro by Rodriguez, the all green screen thing is the movie sped up about 800% and is great to see how the elemtns all came together, I wish the packaging had seperated the booklet from the actual disc case, as the digipak housing the discs has an extra big pamphlet holder which holds the mini version of the Hard Goodbye.

Haven't watched the film with the commentaries yet, the extended seperate versions are a tad underwhelming considering the hype around it, still has some good bits though.

Sadly for my canadian version, when I hit play it plays the title card an individual story in french, then english......fuck that.
I picked it up with the cards and poker chips. Just watched the LONG TAKE, 10 minute cooking school, 15 minute film school and part of the green screen version. So far - so good on the extras - nothing outstanding unless you are a fan of Rodriguez and his minimilast approach to cutting costs and making a good film.
I'll only buy this if there's 8 more minutes of Carla Gugino in the buff.
