Recast Your Favorite Movies For 2005

See The 2004 Thread Here

I'm kickin' this off with an updating of British gangster movie The Long Good Friday. Here goes:

Harold Shand: Ray Winstone

Victoria: Saffron Burrows

Jeff: Paul Bettany

Razors: Frank Harper

Harris: Richard Bremmer

Charlie (the American): Harvey Keitel

Tony (the American): Michael Imperioli

Parky (The Cop): Malcolm McDowell

The IRA Boss: Tommy Flanagan

I'm thinkin' the next time I get a chance I'd do two American versions: one set in NYC, and another set in LA.

Daredevil

With Ed Norton- Daredevil

Bridgette Monyhan-Electra

Christian Bale- Bullseye

James Gandolfini- Kingpin.

Affleck wasn't a bad Daredevil, regardless of what people on the hate bandwagon say. They should watch the Directors Cut. It was a much better film, and more accurate to the character.

Nice job resurrecting the thread, Stormin. I offer the 2005 version of THE PHILADELPHIA STORY:

Tracy Samantha Lord: JENNIFER CONNELLY

C.K. Dexter Haven: PAUL BETTANY

Mike Connor: HUGH JACKMAN

Liz Imbrie: GRETCHEN MOL

George Kittredge: CHRISTOPHER EIGEMAN

Uncle Willie: BRENT SPINER

Seth Lord: COLM FEORE

Margaret Lord: BETH BRODERICK

Dinah Lord: ZOOEY DESCHANEL

Coming soon: MANHUNTER and THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE

Jeff: Edward Burns

Charlie (the Foreign Investor): Rade Serbedzija

Tony (the Foreign Investor): Goran Visnjic

Parky (The Cop): David Carradine

The Enemy Boss: Benicio Del Toro

Because I'm a progressive, forward-thinking kinda guy, I've decided to recast the 2005 version of MANHUNTER...with chicks!

Willa Graham, the forensic investigator: NAOMI WATTS

Mal Graham, Willa's husband: NOAH WYLE

Jackie Crawford, Willa's superior officer: VIOLA DAVIS

Ruben McClane, the blind dude: JAKE WEBER

Winifred Lounds, the tabloid reporter: AMANDA PEET

Frances Dollarhyde, the 'Tooth Fairy': RACHEL GRIFFITHS

and Dr Hannah Lecktor, the stone-cold psycho: TILDA SWINTON

Coming soon: THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE...and a male-oriented version of MANHUNTER
post #6 of 106
Tilda Swinton as Lector? That's awesome.

I'm trying to come up with ideas, but I'm falling short. Ideas?
Thanks, Rath. I was thinking Kristin Scott Thomas for a while. And Judy Davis would have torn that shit up. But Tilda landed it based on her cool androgynous quality and her exquisite line readings in CONSTANTINE (loved that matter-of-fact "You're fucked" to Keanu).

Okay, so here's the testosterone-heavy 2005 remake of MANHUNTER (let's just try to forget Brett Ratner's RED DRAGON ever happened, shall we?), directed by Christopher Nolan:

Will Graham: CAMPBELL SCOTT

Molly Graham: EMBETH DAVIDTZ

Jack Crawford: CHRIS COOPER

Reba McClane: CATE BLANCHETT

Freddy Lounds: ROBERT DOWNEY, JR

Francis Dollarhyde: SEAN PENN

Dr Hannibal Lecktor: JAMES SPADER

Coming soon: THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE

Glengarry Glen Ross

Shelly "The Machine" Levine: Gary Busey

Ricky Roma: Steven Seagal

Ed Harris character: Michael Ironside?

don't know the rest, haven't really thought it through.
Sin City for the early to mid 90's:

Marv: Dolph Lundgren (I know, I have a problem)
Goldie: Uma Thurman
Dwight: Matt Dillon
Manute: Bill Duke
Kevin: Corey Feldmen
Hartigan: Tom Berenger
Jackie Boy: Billy Zane
Nancy: Denise Richards

I think in the thread from last year I said Michael Chiklis and Brian Cox would make for a great McClaine/Gruber combo in "Die Hard." I think now I would switch Chiklis with his "Shield" co-star Walt Goggins.

This part I agree with.

Actually, I can see what you might be trying to do here. Glengarry Glen Ross with a cast of '80s-era B-list tough guys. Novel concept, and anything that gets Jeff Speakman (he'd play Alec Baldwin's role!) and Michael Dudikoff (he'd be the chump Ricky Roma chats up in the bar) off the streets is all right by me.

Please tell me Topher Grace plays Luke.
I couldn't think of a Luke. The only name I had was Hayden, who I feel could do really well under an actor's director.

I just can't find many young actors nowadays I'm really a fan of.

The cast of the 70s TV Show for Spider-Man. When you think about it they probably would be better at it than what Raimi chose. Esp. the Peter-MJ-JJ Jameson combo.

80s Marv: Gary Busey. No need for make-up.
Guys, I hate to be a killjoy, but the alternate Heats/period casts could probally go in another thread. Some of the choices are pretty brilliant, though. I like Fett's Spider-Men through the ages.

I love doing these but they take me a long time. Anyway, here's North by Northwest.

North by Northwest

I LOVE N by NW, but I always imagined Brosnan in the James Mason role and Hugh Grant in the Cary Grant part. Think about it, the lead is a comic performance and Brosnan is far more interesting as a villain.

By the way, here's a great ensemble movie to recast:

The Untouchables!

Hugh Jackman instead of Kevin Costner
James Franco instead of Andy Garcia
Brendan Gleason instead of Sean Connery (why didn't they cast an Irish actor in the 1st place?)
and James Gandolfini (or Bob Hoskins) as Capone
Mickey Rourke as Nitty (the Billy Draco role)

Somebody do Lethal Weapon!
Dangerous Liasons

Cate Blanchett as the Marquise Isabelle de Merteuil (Glenn Close)

Ewen McGregor as the Vicomte Sébastien de Valmont (John Malkovich)

Charlize Theron as Madame Marie de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer)

Adam Brody as Le Chevalier Raphael Danceny (Keanu Reeves)

Scarlett Johnasson as Cécile de Volanges (Uma Thurman)

I hate to be predictable but I'll do Lethal Weapon with Chicks just because I always wanted to.

Laura Linney as Marilyn Riggs:

Pam Grier as Rosalind Murtaugh:

Brenda Blethyn as Gen. McAllister:

Charlize Theron as Ms. Josephine:

THE TERMINATOR:

NAOMI WATTS as Sarah Connor

THOMAS JANE as Kyle Reese

Kevin Smith's ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND:

LIV TYLER as Clementine Kruczynski

JASON LEE as Patrick

MATT DAMON as Stan

GEORGE CARLIN as Dr Howard Mierzwiak

When you're right you're right. Hugh Grant's a much better actor and would be great in the Roger Thornhill part. Don't know why that slipped my mind as I had watched About a Boy earlier that day...

As For Van Damme, Brosnan would be better in that part, I agree. But I'm a huge Sam Neill fan and it's my goal to fit him into every fake remake cast I come up with.
All right, I'm getting this back on track with...

FIELD OF DREAMS
(Written and Directed By Gary Ross)

This recast sets the film during the Baseball Strike of 1994.

Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner)-Aaron Eckhart

Annie Kinsella (Amy Madigan)-Allison Smith

Karin Kinsella (Gaby Hoffman)-Emily Tennant

Couldn't find a decent pick, she was in I, Robot and other minor roles. Chosen only because she looks like she could play Smith and Eckhart's kid, and she's not Dakota Fanning.

Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta)-Joaquin Phoenix

Mark (Timothy Busfield)-Ryan Reynolds

Terence Mann (James Earl Jones)-Avery Brooks

Dr. Archibald 'Moonlight' Graham (Burt Lancaster)-Joel Grey

Archie Graham (Frank Whaley)-Benjamin McKenzie

John Kinsella (Dwier Brown)-Thomas Jane

Beulha (Angry PTA Mother)-Reese Witherspoon (cameo)

Some notes:

The Moonlight Graham part was the hardest to cast: Sam Elliott, Richard Dreyfuss, and Chris Cooper were all considered. But I just kept coming back to the Emcee, and even though he's 5'5" to McKenzie's 5'8" and Lancaster's 6'2" (not to mention Eckhart's tall figure), there's a magical quality to him that I think fits the character just right. So if you guys have any other suggestions, fire away.

As for the legendary Terence Mann, Lawrence Fishburne was my first choice--right off the bat, I heard the "People will come, Ray..." speech in his voice. But the age difference isn't right--Jones had around 15-20 years on Costner in 1989. Then I remembered Avery Brooks' performance as a rebellious man of letters iin "American History X"--and his age gap with Eckhart was much closer to what I wanted. I can't see him shouting "Peace, Love, Pot--Now Get The Hell Out!", but I hear "People will come" just fine.

Coming Soon/Suggestions for Others: SNEAKERS (mine, don't nobody take it!), PULP FICTION, GOODFELLAS (Done right, this with a gender-reversed cast would be nine kinds of genius), RESERVOIR DOGS (This was begun in 2004, could use a proper update), THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, and CHINATOWN.
Would I be off my rocker to believe Clint Eastwood would make a killer Moonlight Graham?
Nice move reserving SNEAKERS, Rath - that'd be fun to recast. Here's my update of Paul Schrader's 1982 version of CAT PEOPLE:

Irena Gallier: JOY BRYANT

Paul Gallier: TERRENCE HOWARD

Oliver Yates: SIMON BAKER

Alice Perrin: ERICA LEERHSEN

Female: PAM GRIER

Joe Creigh: JUSTIN BARTHA

Bill Searle: DOMINIC PURCELL

Coming soon: THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE and a FAR FROM HEAVEN-style remix of DANGEROUS LIAISONS
post #39 of 106
Was thinking about Rath's suggestion for a distaff GOODFELLAS and thought I'd throw in a couple of casting suggestions (will add pics later).

By the way, Kathryn Bigelow's directing this one.

Henrietta Hill: RACHEL WEISZ

Tammy DeVito: FAIRUZA BALK

Jenny Conway: MADELEINE STOWE

Darren Hill: MARK RUFFALO

Paulina Cicero: KIRSTIE ALLEY

Feel free to shoot down (or wildly praise) these choices!
Hmmm. I like Balk, but I think she's too intimidating. The frightening thing about Tommy is that he can turn on a dime, you never know what's going to set him off, and Balk just screams "craaaazy." Weisz is nice, but I feel like Henry should be a little younger, too.

Conway's a hard part. I was thinking Angelina Jolie could do well.

And Kathy Bates is Paulie to me. Period.
How about this?

as Henrietta Hill

as Tammy DeVito

And now that I think about it, you're right about Kathy Bates in the Paul Sorvino role. Kirstie Alley can take the Mercedes Ruehl role in my upcoming recast of MARRIED TO THE MOB.
Yes on Silverman--that's exactly the kind of edge I was talking about. Not sure about Forlani, though.

Here's my updated Sneakers (in two parts!). I went a little young on some of the casting.

SNEAKERS
(Directed by Doug Liman)

Martin Bishop/Martin Brice (Robert Redford)-George Clooney

Cosmo (Ben Kingsley)-Robert Downey, Jr.

Donald Crease (Sidney Poiter)-Jeffery Wright

Erwin 'Whistler' Emory (David Straithairn)-Peter Sarsgaard

Mother (Dan Ackroyd)-Paul Giamatti

Carl Arbegast (River Phoenix)-Emile Hirsh

Here's Doug Liman's SNEAKERS, Part II:

Dick Gordon (Timothy Busfield)-Adam Baldwin

Buddy Wallace (Eddie Jones)-Dennis Farina

Liz (Mary McDonnell)-Bridget Moynahan

Dr. Gunter Janek (Donal Logue)-Patton Oswalt

Gregor (George Hearn)-John Glover

Dr. Werner Brandes (Stephen Tobolowsky)-Martin Starr

Bernice Abbott, NSA (James Earl Jones)-Anna Devare Smith

Coming Up: Inspired by the news of the "A Few Good Men" revival in London starring Rob Lowe, I thought I'd try my hand at that. Lowe is, of course, totally wrong for the part--Kaffee should be a snot-nosed, arrogant little shit. So maybe Sarsgaard, again. Given the right director, Ryan Reynolds would be great. I see Nathan "Firefly" Fillion in the Kevin Bacon role, and maybe Rachel McAdams in the Demi Moore part. If I go with Reynolds over Sarsgaard, he'd also be good in the Bacon role, maybe even the Pollock part (although I see that going to someone like Sorkin regular Bradley Whitford).

The Nicholson role's got some mighty big boots to fill, though, and whoever I cast would take it in a completely different direction. I was thinking Clancy Brown, but I'm just not sure. Ideas?
80's Spider-Man:

Peter Parker/Spider-Man - MICHAEL BIEHN

Eddie Brock/Venom - RAY LIOTTA

Cletus Cassidy/Carnage - ANDREW ROBINSON

Norman Osbourne/Green Goblin - JACK NICHOLSON

Harry Osbourne/Green Goblin II - BILL PAXTON

Otto Octavius/Dr. Octopus - CHARLES BRONSON

Curt Conners/The Lizard - KURT RUSSELL

Wilson Fisk/Kingpin - MARLON BRANDO

The Vulture - LEE VAN CLEEF

Tombstone - DOLPH LUNDGREN

J. Jonah Jameson - LEE MARVIN

Rhino - RODDY PIPER

Shocker - BRUCE CAMPBELL

Kraven the Hunter - CLINT EASTWOOD

Mysterio - JEFFREY COMBS

Ironside. Nice. However, I went with a guy who's been talked about a lot around here lately, and could certainly use the "boost."

A FEW GOOD MEN
(Directed by Thomas Schlamme)

Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise)-Ryan Reynolds

Col. Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nicholson)-Michael Wincott

Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore)-Rachel McAdams

Lt. Sam Weinberg (Kevin Pollak)-Liev Schreiber

Capt. Jack Ross (Kevin Bacon)-Wentworth Miller

Lt. Jonathan Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland)-Nick Stahl

Lt. Col. Matthew Markinson (J.T. Walsh)-Clancy Brown

Pfc. Louden Downey (James Marshall)-Lucas Black

Lance Cpl. Harold W. Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison)-J. August Richards

Thomas Schlamme's "A Few Good Men" continued:

Dr. Stone (Christopher Guest)-Dylan Baker

Judge Randolph (J.A. Preston)-Barry Shabaka Henley

Lt. Dave Spradling (Matt Craven)-Joshua Malina

Capt. Whitaker (Xander Berkley)-Christian Slater

Cpl. Jeffrey Barnes (Noah Wyle)-Ryan Gosling

Cpl. Carl Hammaker (Cuba Gooding, Jr.)-Dule Hill

Ah, Wincott. There's no beating the rasp, is there?

Peter Berg did an okay job unofficially remaking MIDNIGHT RUN as THE RUNDOWN, but I'm handing the job of directing this 2005 recast of the Martin Brest 1988 original to Kevin Bray, director of the underrated WALKING TALL remake:

Jack Walsh (Robert De Niro): RUSSELL CROWE

Jonathan 'The Duke' Mardukas (Charles Grodin): DAVID DUCHOVNY

FBI Agent Alonzo Mosely (Yaphet Kotto): VING RHAMES

Jimmy Serrano (Dennis Farina): ANTHONY LaPAGLIA

Marvin Dorfler (John Ashton): CHRISTOPHER MELONI

Eddie Moscone (Joe Pantoliano): JOHN C. McGINLEY

Casting notes: I thought Crowe was the right age for a burnt-out bounty hunter, although I was initially thinking about a Bruce Willis-Steve Martin team-up for the two leads. (If I was going younger, I'd cast Ben Affleck as Jack Walsh, maybe Jason Lee as The Duke.) Duchovny's got the right deadpan style to play well off Crowe's increasingly flustered character. Bernie Mac and Delroy Lindo were alternates for Alonzo Mosely, John Turturro or Steve Buscemi could easily have played Moscone. And I think Meloni could nicely balance the bumbling and dangerous qualities of Walsh's rival, Marvin.

Coming soon: DANGEROUS LIAISONS, MARRIED TO THE MOB and THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE.
If they'd kept HIGH FIDELITY set in London:

Rob Gordon (John Cusack) - Alan Davies:

Barry (Jack Black) - Nick Frost:

Laura (Iben Hjejle) - Jo Joyner:

The one on the far right.

I can't think of anyone for Dick.....

And there's no point doing the entire cast of HALLOWEEN, so I'll put my claim down here for BRIAN COX as Dr Sam Loomis.
It ranks somewhere around VOLUNTEERS and THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES (both cool candidates for recasting, by the way) in the Tom Hanks filmography, but I've always had a soft spot for THE MAN WITH ONE RED SHOE. Here's my cast for an update, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo:

Richard Drew (Tom Hanks): ZACH BRAFF

Maddy (Lori Singer): RACHEL McADAMS

Cooper (Dabney Coleman): CHEVY CHASE

Ross (Charles Durning): DAN AYKROYD

Morris (Jim Belushi): WILL ARNETT

Paula (Carrie Fisher): SARAH SILVERMAN

Brown (Edward Herrmann): RICHARD SCHIFF

Virdon (Irving Metzman): DAVID CROSS

Reese (Tom Noonan): BOB ODENKIRK

Casting notes: It was either Ryan Reynolds or Braff for the lead, and I thought Braff could do a better job of the bemused nice-guy act the role required. I wanted actors with some shared history to play the combative Cooper and Ross, and was originally gonna have Cross and Odenkirk in those roles but then thought they were a bit too young to play veteran spies. So I went with SPIES LIKE US costars Chase and Aykroyd, giving the MR SHOW stars the minor but enjoyable roles of inept field agents Virdon and Reese.
