Damn, Tommy, you really make a dude stay on his "A" game.
Just tryin' to keep up, Rath.

Time for one more before I call it a day and check out that PRIMER disc I picked up. Here's DANGEROUS LIAISONS, re-imagined as a PEYTON PLACE-style '50s-era melodrama. Unsure who could handle this - Todd Haynes is too obvious a choice after FAR FROM HEAVEN; Jonathan Demme's a possibility; Jean-Pierre Jeunet, maybe?

Anyway, here's the cast:

Isabelle Merteuil (Glenn Close): DIANE LANE

Sebastian Valmont (John Malkovich): GEORGE CLOONEY

Marie Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer): CARRIE-ANNE MOSS

Mrs Volange (Swoosie Kurtz): JUDY DAVIS

Cecily Volange (Uma Thurman): ALEXIS BLEDEL

Ralph Danceny (Keanu Reeves): AUSTIN NICHOLS

Mrs Rosemonde (Mildred Natwick): SHIRLEY MacLAINE

Casting notes: Almost went with Viggo Mortensen instead of Clooney, but Clooney's got that '50s scotch-and-Chesterfields presence that would suit this project. The Pfeiffer role was the toughest but I think Moss could nail the vulnerability the part requires. Evan Rachel Wood, Anne Hathaway and Emmy Rossum were all in mind for the ingenue role, but Bledel has (a) that sweet GILMORE GIRLS rep (I haven't seen SIN CITY yet, so that might be shot to hell) and (b) a slight resemblance to Judy Davis, who's playing her mother. (And I may be outing myself as a filthy old bastard here but I think Rory Gilmore re-enacting Uma's most famous LIAISONS scene - you know the one - would be out-of-fucking-sight.)

Coming soon: MARRIED TO THE MOB and SLAP SHOT (with Owen, Luke and Andrew Wilson as the Hanson brothers).

Evil Ed Thompson (Stephen Geoffreys): FRANKIE MUNIZ

Billy Cole (Jonathan Stark): KIP PARDUE

I was feelin' kinda masochistic the other night, so I dragged out an old VHS copy of THE RUNNING MAN. Jesus Christ, did everyone involved with this screw the pooch or what? As a huge fan of Richard Bachman's novel, I had such high hopes for this. With the film resembling the book in title only, however, I figured this was as good a place as any to give it an overhaul by recasting according to the novel.

I'll include brief character descriptions to give people unfamiliar with the book a better idea of what to expect, but the plot essentially breaks down like this: It's the future, and everything's fucked. The environment's stuffed, the economy's shot to hell (with a chasm between the haves and have-nots) and the only thing that keeps the population from mass suicide is their addiction to television, which broadcasts insanely dangerous and competitive game shows around the clock.

The most successful is 'The Running Man', and every poor shlub in town is desperate to appear as a contestant. The rules are simple: Go on the run for 30 days, successfully evade a nation of fellow citizens who want to turn you in for cash prizes and a team of network-sponsored hunters who want to kill you, and you win one million bucks.

Ben Richards, 28, smart, poor and anti-authoritarian, enters the game to provide for his wife and sick baby: BEN AFFLECK

Dan Killian, urbane and ruthless head of the network that airs 'The Running Man' and other game shows: JEFFREY WRIGHT

Amelia Williams, a wealthy young woman taken hostage by Ben: MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL

Sheila Richards, Ben's wife: ELLEN POMPEO

Jimmy Laughlin, a cynical 'Running Man' contestant: PETER SARSGAARD

Bobby Thompson, the host of 'The Running Man': GREG KINNEAR

Bradley, a young, streetwise social activist who helps Ben: SEAN NELSON

Elton Parrakis, another activist: PRUITT TAYLOR VINCE

Evan McCone. leader of the team of hunters stalking Ben: ROBERT JOHN BURKE

Screenplay by ANDREW KEVIN WALKER. Directed by DAVID FINCHER.

Coming soon: SLAP SHOT, MARRIED TO THE MOB and TIME AFTER TIME.

Buscemi is the answer. Because Macy is Kolchak.

But answer me this, Rath, who would make a better Jim Rockford today? Bruce Willis or George Clooney?

Clooney. Willis is a touch too blue-collar, and even when he's doing the smart-ass thing (as in Die Hard), it doesn't feel like he's having a good time. Clooney gives you the laid-back, rugged/suave, smart-ass and having a helluva ball feel you want for a Rockford.

And if you can't get him, tell Mel Gibson to stop takin' the crazy pills.

I'd watch that version of Heat.
It's Rath's thread, the rest of us just post here occasionally.

And good call on Clooney as Rockford. I had Gibson in mind as well but it seems so long since he wasn't insane that I kinda put him out of the running. Tell you what, though, if Kevin Costner could fully regain the charm he displayed again in THE UPSIDE OF ANGER I'd seriously consider him as Jim Rockford.
Thanks, Tommy. And Costner as Rockford's actually a pretty good choice as well (and am I the only one who finds it hilarious he's playing the inspiration for Ben Braddock in the upcoming "Rumor Has It"?).

Credit has to go to Anderson for a couple of those; he came up with the Oldman as Pacino, and suggested Owen as Kilmer rather than one of the leads, and Roth as Waingro was one of his as well.

The Heat one actually took up most of my afternoon, and I had to get rid of a few of my personal favorites because I didn't feel they fit. I really wanted to find a place for Brendan Gleeson, and tried him out in both Williamson's role (mainly because I think he'd kill delivering that monologue to Christine), and originally had him in the Voight part. However, when I hit upon the idea of McDowell, it seemed better--especially since he's done all those great British crime movies.

The women were probally the hardest part to cast--I almost picked Amelia Warner for the Ashley Judd part, and was racking my brain for the Diane Venora role. Emma Thompson was almost who I chose, but I finally hit upon Williams and it just seemed to click. About the only one that I was certain of was Seymour in the Brenneman part, she broke/stole my heart in Adaptation and I wish she'd get more work. And Emma Watson was just thrown in there (although she'd do a good job) because she's about the only English actress in the age range that I know.

David Thewlis (and Bowie, too*) were a couple who didn't make the cut, but I had to throw in some fan favorites like Freeman and Pegg (and, of course, Bean) in small roles.

Also, as you can see, this version of "Heat" is a little more high class, with Attenborough playing a wealthy, corrupt Lord (in a role that first went to Hugh Grant, then to Kenneth Branagh, before I finally settled on Attenborough) and Gervasis as a member of Parliment.

But it was a lot of fun coming up with the little a-to-bs like Johnny Rotten in the Henry Rollins part. My favorite? The Monaghan-Hunnam combo as the pair of brotherly snitches. Mainly because the idea of Oldman screaming "GIMME ALL YOU GOT!" while Hunnam tries to wiggle his way out of it tickles me to death.

Anyway, thanks for the good words. I hope to do at least a few more of these and actually provide some discussion on them.

*Speaking of Bowie, howsabout a LABYRINTH update? That could be cool.

I was originally going to cast Hayek in the role of Calvera but thought she'd better suited in Bronson's role. Brynner must've been at least 50 when he played the role and McQueen was 30 so I don't think it's too much of stretch.

Peet or Garner aren't drop-dead enough to make Archie Leach do what he does in that film.

There's no way to compete with all these excellent recastings of THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY, so here's my recasting of another terrific Bob Hoskins movie: Neil Jordan's great MONA LISA. The 2005 remake is directed by Joe Carnahan.

Before those, however, here is my cast for the 2005 version of APOCALYPSE NOW, directed by Darren Aronofsky.

Kilgore (Robert Duvall): TOM CRUISE

Willard (Martin Sheen): JIM CAVIEZEL

Clean (Larry Fishburne): DEREK LUKE

Photojournalist (Dennis Hopper): ADRIEN BRODY

Colonel Lucas (Harrison Ford): ERIC BANA

General Corman (G.D. Spradlin): JAMEY SHERIDAN

...and because of the ten-image limit, I can't include a pic of WILLIAM FICHTNER as Jerry, the civilian (originally played by Jerry Zeismer), but I just like the idea of Fichtner's distinctive voice saying that one single line: "Terminate...with extreme prejudice".

Talented actresses saying 'fuck' one fuck of a lot - what more do you want out of life? Welcome to the all-female remake of David Mamet's GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, directed by Nicole Holofcener.

That Apocalypse Now recasting is awesome.
Yeah, the idea of Tom Cruise as Kilgore is only matched by the sound of Catherine Keener saying "Do you think I am fucking with you? I am not fucking with you." as only she can.

Great casting.
Before that L.A. CONFIDENTIAL cast I'm working on is finalised, here's the 2005 recasting of a film I really dig, VAMP.

Keith (Chris Makepeace): SHIA LaBEOUF

AJ (Robert Rusler): EMILE HIRSCH

Duncan (Gedde Watanabe): JAY BARUCHEL

Amaretto (Dedee Pfeiffer): SUMMER GLAU

Vic (Sandy Baron): DAVID KRUMHOLTZ

Vlad (Brad Logan): TRIPLE H

Snow (Billy Drago): DOMINIC MONAGHAN

and Katrina (Grace Jones): BAI LING

Directed by LUKE GREENFIELD.

vamp

vamp: nice. Not only was the re-casting really well chosen and imaginative, but it also brought back the long forgotten memory of a film, I too, really dig. Bravo!

I look forward to the LA confidential one, not least because (Dudley Smith's crap Irish accent excepted) it's one of the most well cast films of recent years.
Here it is: L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, the chick flick. Gillian Armstrong's in the director's chair for this one.

Sergeant Jackie Vincennes (Kevin Spacey): MICHELLE PFEIFFER

Officer Wendy 'Barb' White (Russell Crowe): KATE BEAHAN

Detective Lieutenant Edwina Exley (Guy Pearce): ROSAMUND PIKE

Captain Delia Smith (James Cromwell): PAULINE COLLINS

Patricia Patchett (David Strathairn): ELIZABETH McGOVERN

Sydney Hudgeons (Danny DeVito): MOLLY SHANNON

District Attorney Ella Loew (Ron Rifkin): JANE LYNCH

Maddie Reynolds (Simon Baker): MICHELLE MONAGHAN

Len Bracken (Kim Basinger): KYLE MacLACHLAN

Casting notes: Some tough calls here, partially because some roles were hard to cast (two in particular) and partially because there were a lot of cool actresses I would like to have included: Famke Janssen, Sigourney Weaver, Marcia Gay Harden, Lena Olin, Brenda Blethyn, Brenda Fricker, Rachel Weisz and Calista Flockhart, to name just a few.

Pfeiffer was one of my first choices - a bit of her FABULOUS BAKER BOYS attitude would be perfect for Vincennes. I wanted to echo the original film's move of going with relative unknowns as White and Exley: Beahan's an Aussie actress who appeared alongside Eric Bana in CHOPPER, has a supporting role in FLIGHTPLAN and recently landed a lead in Neil LaBute's WICKER MAN remake, while English actress Pike is in DOOM and PRIDE & PREJUDICE. Collins has the jovial and parental manner you need for Smith. I was almost going to go with Megan Mullally in the DeVito role but couldn't subject audiences to her voice. And McGovern I just want to see on-screen again because I adore her.

And thanks to Rath for the suggestion of MacLachlan - remembering that Basinger's character was meant to resemble Veronica Lake, it was a good call that MacLachlan's character should resemble Cary Grant (after all, MacLachlan gave a great performance as Grant in the recent comedy TOUCH OF PINK). That said, I think he could also play a pretty fair Rock Hudson impersonator. See any resemblance?

Coming soon: TIME AFTER TIME, MARRIED TO THE MOB and SPARTACUS.
This isn't much of a cast - only three members! - but I really dig Nicholas Meyer's time-travel fantasy TIME AFTER TIME and wanted to jot down my selections for the 2005 version, directed by SHAUN OF THE DEAD's Edgar Wright:

H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell): GUY PEARCE

Amy Robbins (Mary Steenburgen): ELIZABETH BANKS

John Leslie Stevenson, a.k.a. Jack the Ripper (David Warner): DAVID THEWLIS

The thing is, this is one of those casts where I had a lot of alternates. When I first started thinking this over, I liked Hugh Grant as Wells. Johnny Depp, Steve Coogan and Ewan McGregor all came to mind, as did Hugh Laurie (who could easily play Jack the Ripper as well). And I know Pearce was in that TIME MACHINE remake a few years back, but I figured he deserves to be in a good time-travel flick.

Evangeline Lilly, Lauren Graham and Ione Skye were in the running for Amy.

And as for Jack, well, there's Jason Isaacs, Hugo Weaving, Daniel Craig, Rufus Sewell...but in the end, I could really hear Thewlis saying "100 years ago I was a freak. Here I'm an amateur" (a fucking great line of dialogue). Thewlis would also make a terrific Wells, based on his wonderfully sympathetic performance in PRISONER OF AZKABAN.

All this recent talk about 'rebooting' old franchises got me thinking about a new GHOSTBUSTERS cast, so I thought I'd toss a few names into the ring and see if I could get some feedback before making final selections and adding images.

By the way, Jon Favreau is directing.

Dr Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis): DAVID SCHWIMMER

Awaiting your suggestions or insults...

Was also considering an updated DOUBLE INDEMNITY with Benicio Del Toro in the Edward G. Robinson role and Topher Grace as Fred MacMurray. Need a femme fatale, though. Was thinking Scarlett Johansson but wondered about teaming Grace and Johansson again after IN GOOD COMPANY. Any thoughts, anyone?
