For me it was 100% Clerks. I've loved a lot of movies both before and after Clerks, but it was Kevin Smith who made me realize that it was actually possible to get a movie made without knocking on doors in Hollywood. I didn't even know what film festivals were back then

wow, sin city pretty quick on the list, i can't wait to see that movie.

well, for me, it's not directing or writing. It's the special effects and art direction...

Star Wars
Aliens
Jurassic Park
Dark City

But mostly I blame Star Wars! haha

I had the Disney Channel when I was 4 or 5 (back before they had commercial interruptions), so I grew up on a steady diet of classic cartoons and animated features. My favorites were "Pinnochio," "Alice in Wonderland" and "Sword and the Stone." Those piqued my interest in art, fantasy and storytelling.

While i LOVE the star wars films they never had an impact on me to want to go out and make a film and join the film industry. strange but true.

I agree. I got into "Star Wars" much later than most geeks, so my passion for becoming a filmmaker was already full-steam ahead.

Two films

Excalibur

and The Thin Red Line.

Really it was TRL that pushed me over the edge. Before that I was deeply involved in theater and probably would still be exclusively involved in stage if Malick hadn't opened my eyes.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

I'd love to put other movies on the list, but that was the one that made me think "I want to do this". Everything else has been icing on the cake.

These are the films that particularly impacted me and continue to make me want to persue storytelling in some visual form.

Star Wars
Wizard of Oz
Forbidden Planet
City of Lost Children
Eraserhead
Wings of Desire
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Evil Dead II

Mainly:
Batman (as soon as I saw this, at a young and impressionable age, I decided to be a filmmaker and I never wavered...the other films either heavily inspired me or further bolstered my dreams)
Evil Dead
Memento
Reservoir Dogs
Desperado
LOTR trilogy

Of course, there are plenty of other films (like Star Wars, the Indiana Jones trilogy, Aliens, and on and on...) that are amazing, and have reminded me why I love movies. There's no way I could sit here and list them all.

for me it was any movie I saw-- afterwards, when I stepped back out into the real world. that and riding in cars. most of the types of films I aspire to make I've seen after I decided that's what I wanted to do.

I think seeing Clerks in fourth or fifth grade made me say, Wow, I fucking love movies already, but that just convinced me that I could actually make one myself. Same applies to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Westerns seem rather accessible when you live in the West.

Recently, I've been on a foreign classics kick and movies like Breathless and Rashomon and Jules et Jim just inspire me more and more.

I forgot Evil Dead 2! Man, that film is brilliant.

I've never seen Clerks...shame on me.
