Congratulations Nick. I'm glad it's heading towards being a reality. You can never have too many movies about giant monsters if you ask me.
Awesomely kickass news, Nick. It seems like yesterday you were passing around that gigantic fucking Megladon tooth in Austin to give us Chewers an idea on how big a fish you were thinking of. It percolates my heart to hear things've panned out for you.

And is the date in your user title the projected release date? If it is, then congratulations. Your first produced Hollywood movie and you get the 4th of July weekend? That's cause for celebration.
Congrats Nick and with New Line this film should be in good hands. Although i'd be lying if I didn't raise my eyebrows at the man directing this.

I enjoyed the book and i'll be hoping for nothing but the best.
Hell fucking yeah. I am extremely excited to hear that this is all going through. Congratulations, Nick, you truly deserve this. A producer on a summer release from a major studio...bravo. I'm still kinda pissed I didn't catch you in Orlando to talk more about what the process was like. Again, congrats. I will definitely be in line for this next summer.
What bank did you rob to get a piece of the script?!

I'll go three times for you opening weekend. Whats that, $21?

How many points are you getting on this movie?

Muhahahahahaha ~throws money around the room~

Congrats!
Kick ass, man. I'm really looking forward to this. A well made monster shark movie sounds like just about the perfect summer popcorn flick.
Alten is reissuing the book?

Badass. Will be interesting to see the changes made.

Any clue as to when we can see a photo of the maquette of the creature?

Oh... and congrats on the news.
This will be great fun. Albeit a stressful time for you, remember you have a pack of guys wishing you all the best back here.
Nick, I just want to say good luck. CHUD has been a great outlet for my own tastes in the world of mass media and I just got to say thanks for putting it together and supporting it man.

You deserve a shot like this. I know Drew aka Moriarty has been workin in the field for a few years and Harry Knowles has been attached to a number of things, but I hope that you are the first of the "web" generation to make a big splash (pun intended) in legitimate movie making.

I never read Meg, but I enjoy the premise. It could be great. Deep Blue Sea was a fun movie.

And I would also like to be the first of the Chewers to ask for my name to be put in the credits of the movie as something that sounds important and gay like "best boy" or "head grip".
My only comment is I'd like to see a freak of a giant shark - not just a rehash of Jaws 3. Megaladons look like big sharks right? How 'bout something uglier? Much uglier?

I'm gonna shut the negative side of my brain down and give you a huge bravo at this news. I have no idea what these books are about but your involvement makes me immediately interested in this project. It's good to see someone who has a passion for movies get a chance to knock one out of the park.

My only fear now would be that this gets the same release date as "Punisher 2" in the summer of 2006. If that's the case things might get real bad for me around that time.

Best of luck!
Good luck with this, Nick.

If it's not too much to ask, I don't suppose there's any chance of seeing the shark breaching? That would be fucking cool.
Awesome news and congrats Nick...
Lots of luck, Nick!

I look forward to all the new developments.

And once everything's squared away, you've got to have a big screening in Atlanta.

Would have been nice if they had a link to CHUD
post #17 of 594
Awsome news! Good luck with it, Nick.

Now if you'll bring me on as a camera trainee I'll try and get everyone in my town (pop. 140,000) to go see it!
I wish you the best Nick. I'm sure this will be a great experience for you regardless of what happens, hopefully success.
very cool. two tickets in this household sold.

I hope you get to do a dvd commentary in screencap mode. that'd be worth the price of the disc alone.
Good luck with this.

I'm also very interested to hear more details about how the process works and unfolds for a first-time producer (which it sounds like you might doing in a Meg Diary).

From I've heard about the book, the shark has a special visual characteristic due to where it lives. I won't mention what it is as...
a) I don't want to be the one to spoil it if someone didn't know.
b) I could be wrong as I haven't read the book. It's only what I read on the net.
You mean (spoiler? I dunno, it's on Alten's site - highlight the black text)

The shark being luminous white?

Yeah that's what I meant. It's not that much of a spoiler, but I'd never want to ruin a movie for someone.

(side note, I read the paper the other day and it spoilt the ending for Million Dollar Baby which I am yet to see. I was not happy)
Congratulations, Nick! Best of luck! You've got my $8.50.

A few suggestions...

- You absolutely have to cameo in the flick. Get Dave, Devin and Micah in on the action as well.
- Considering your a fan of Buffy and Angel and are now in a position of power, maybe try getting a few of your favorite actors from the shows for roles. Most of them should be cheap to get and as a bonus, you'll attract their fanbase.
- Get Roy Scheider to cameo.
- "We're gonna need a bigger boat!" or a variation of that line has to be said at some point.
- If you make a sequel, call it Super Megalodon Munching Avenger or SMEGMA for short. *kidding*

Hillary Swank being luminous white?
Congratulations. I hope you get news like this again and again.
Awesome stuff, Nick. I'd go see this anyway, being a giant fucking shark movie and all, but your involvement makes it that much sweeter. Give 'em hell, chief.
Woodward, you dumb shit. You do know this isn't a sequel to Jaws, don't you?

I have the audio book (http://www.audible.com) and I'm listening to it for the 3rd time right now. It's a quick listen as it's the 6 hour abridged version.

I just have vivid memories of Jaws 3, when the giant shark crashes into the control room. I want the shark to look prehistoric, even though I know they haven't changed much. It's been soo long since a good sea monster movie. If I'm not getting a monster plesiosaur, I'll take a monster shark...

Settle down, Slater. Take another pill. Of course I know it's not a Jaws sequel! I'm sure Nick and the rest of the creative team will work to distinguish MEG from it's predesessors but it can't hurt to pay a little homage to the king.
Congratulations! May it be the first in a long string of hits.

(Even if many here have given copious amounts of shit to Jan Debont) http://chud.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3921

Seriously, congratulations and good luck! Looking forward to seeing it.

I'd like to go on record here and say that I, personally, have not given copious amounts of anything to Jan Debont...

...or vice versa...

...yet.
Congrats!

All the best and i hope to be seeing this one in the cinema soon.
Congrats man, not just for getting a movie made, but for getting one that will most likely be tons of prehistoric fun. I was ready for this movie when i read the book awhile ago, and the fact that we get to experience it a bit through your p.o.v. shall be icing on the cake. I think DeBont will do just fine with the movie. He can handle big budget films, and im sure with the creative team behind MEG this movie will be a BLAST. Kudos Nick, and good luck.
Mazel Tov Nick!

Perhaps instead of paid registration to the MB's, we can just send in five or six ticket stubs from Meg's opening weekend?

Best of luck.

ha ha ha ha ha ha

On a related subject, congrats Nick and wish you all the best with it. Looking forward to your producer diary. Can someone fill me in with which MEG book is being adapted? I know there are a few, and want to order the right one from amazon. Thanks.
To answer the question above...MEG (the first book) is the one headed to the big screen. Having been a fan of Steve Alten's work since MEG first came out, and featured as a character in last years Primal Waters, this is truly excellent news...but I do have a concern...Shane Serlano? Did you guys even see Alien vs. Predator? Surely AVP is no reason to doubt Shane's writing abilities, but it does draw concern from me. Anyway, excellent news. Good luck, Nick. Oh, btw, if anyone gets a chance, pick up Alten's new book The Loch, his best novel yet.
damn, I spelled that dude's name wrong. I was close anyway. Later all.
Great news Nick, nice to see that it's all working out. If it reaches where I am, I'll definitely drop everything to go see it.
Will there be titty?
I remember reading somewhere that Nick Wanted Sean Bean in this film, so will he be following his trend of increasingly girly haircuts?
Congrats Nick. Big time. Watching the site just get better and better each year, and your opportunities as well, has been great to see. I'm so happy for you, I hope it continues to be a dream come true. You deserve it. The idea of the good guys getting a chance to really make movies is just so reassuring. I mean, your first project is going to be a major studio summer release? Unbelievable. I've always seen that your tastes run almost scarily alike with mine, so I think its going to be really fun to see how this movie comes along.

And if you get Sean Bean in this, you are the coolest motherfucker on the planet.
Congratulations, Nick! Make it kick ass and don't let the biz destroy what's great about you.
Anybody else have the Meg audiobook? I'm listening to this and it sounds like the audio is playing at a slower speed. Is it the narrator? Anyone else can confirm this? Jonas sounds like Napoleon Dynamite.

"You have a Megaladon? Sweeet!"
You should hear the REVENGE OF THE SITH audiobook.

'Love is more than a candle. LOVE. CAN IGNITE THE STA-RRS!'
Much swankyness indeed.
Well this is good news. Now I've got a moie to lok forward to for next year. It will be here befor ewe know it and I can't wait. Good luck to all involved, hope you guys have a blast making it and I hope it's a blast to watch... MEG, Summer 2006... MEG the DVD, fall 2006(?)... Oh yeah!

I'll definitely check out the reissued book and I still need to get my hands on the third one.
I've got a GREAT idea for the intro. A bunch of cavemen are playing basketball. They're chanting "UNKA TINKA RAH RAH". Suddenly a big shark pops out of NOWHERE and says "Give my your wallet cave-man" and they don't so he bites them so HARD that their eyes pop straight through their cardboard masks and fall back into their mouths. That would be the coolest thing ever.

It's been a long, fun road. Congrats!
Fantastic news. We'll be waiting.
Big-time congrats, Nick!

Also, I think we all know of another producer who can officially suck it long and hard.

So there on opening night...
