Come on, now you are just being petulant! Would it kill you to allow it for a site you get a lot out of visiting? Again, if you are responsible with Windows, you don't have to be so concerned with allowing ad feed through. If you are visiting www.hottgermanbusinessmen.com all of the time, well then I stand corrected.

Interesting thread. I've been lurking Chud for a long time, so from that perspective I would like to support the site as much as possible (though I block as many as possible because a lot of the ones CHUD uses actually hinders my browser performance). I see points from both sides, though I can't help but admit that the content has dropped off severely over the last few years.

I think Devin is a wonderful writer and aside from Nick he's the reason I visit the front page. Unfortunately he's the reason a lot of really good people have stopped coming around the boards at all. He's spawned a whole clique of flame-first, talk-film-later posters who have turned most conversation into an overread AICN talkback.

If this is really that big of an issue, maybe a pay site system is the way to go. I've supported Nick in the past and I'll gladly support him in the future, regardless of the attitude around here. In the end, the posters could make this a better place by respecting the requests of the proprieters of the site. Nick and Devin could make this a better place by turning down the "we're too good for this shit" attitude that emanates from this place. I know it'd make people more comfortable around here (that goes for me, at the very least). The less threatened they feel the more they'll do what they can to help management out.

And frankly, Devin, asking for respect does nothing unless you walk the walk. I have nothing against you personally, and I really enjoy your work on the main page, but you've never been one to dish out any kind of respect to someone with an opposing viewpoint. I respect your position, but it's never going to be an effective one until you get the ball rolling yourself. It'd be nice to see.

In the end, I guess, do whatever the hell you want. You guys have done pretty well with that strategy so far.

Always remember that they once considered charging us for the boards. Be thankful they are doing what they can not to.

It'd be the first internet site in history asking people to turn off their popup blockers. I don't think it's going ot happen, but again, if they feel we're robbing them they should just spell it out.

I really don't see the problem with sending them news, it doesn't really hurt anything and the most it does is take time. There was a point where I did it constantly, even if I was kind of sure they would find out themselves I sent it in. I stopped, mostly because everyone started throwing it on the boards instead and it would be moot because Dave or Devin would see it there instead.

Its kind of funny too, because a lot of the ones people race to post sometimes get no responses for hours making the whole "When it breaks, we want to discuss it immediately!" thing really empty. And if that's the problem there are blogs, chat programs, other message boards and real life indviduals you could talk about it to.

I can't stress enough that if you don't like the ads, people, rules or main site you should just leave the message boards. Too many people stick around to complain, and its the equivalent of someone hanging out at their high school when they're 21 just to tell everyone else how bad it was. And if this is your mentality, eventually your going to get booted because all you do is bitch and add nothing. Its because of that stupidity that half the people I recommend this site to end their analysis of the site with. "I think I'll read their reviews, but that messge board is fucked up."

And once and awhile the scoop button didn't work for me. I usually send it to Devin or Dave by not using that link. I don't send it to Nick all the time because he posts main site stuff less frequently as time goes on, and probably doesn't want to be bothered as much. Common sense shows Devin, Dave and George are the frequent writers now.

whether or not the "rule" or "request" is fair or not isn't really the issue. I'll admit, at first it sorta rubbed me the wrong way that I could get chastised for posting something that's already on another website. but I wouldn't, because the moderators asked me not to. I think the issue is the weird sense of entitlement and injustice that many people on the internet have. It's childish petulance, really.

I don't have problems with ads, like I said before, I've even clicked on them (which I doubt most people here have). I just don't like popups.

I don't have a problem with being courteous and sending the people from the site the news before posting here, specially because they make it clear they would like people do that.

I have no idea whether you have valid reasons for this or not, but as Devin said, it might be best to not mention it on the boards. I think it's pretty understandable that it pisses off the people who depend on the ad revenue to keep the site going.

But for that matter, are there even popups here anymore? I can't remember getting one in ages, and I certainly don't have any blocking program on, to the best of my knowledge.

You're probably using one of these rogue popup blocker programs and don't even know about it. You're robbing ad revenue from the site! REPENT!!!

Here's a question, since Devin posted a faitly big spoiler for a film he hated in the Amanda Peet story, today...at what point do we stop respecting that someone may not have seen a film, and spoil away?

That sounds snarky, but it's not meant to be.

Give me a break, that movie came out two years ago.

Rosebud is a sled!

Darth is Luke's father!

The girl is a dude in THE CRYING GAME!

There's a statute of limitations on this shit, and two years is WAY long enough. That movie has been on cable a zillion times, appears in discount DVD bins... Jesus.

And why is that question in this thread?
Devin, not everything is an attack on you. I said it wasn't a snarky comment, it was an honest question...at what point do we not have to worry about spoliers being spoilers and can just post the info?

As to why it's in this thread, as it's about rules and board behavior, which is more on topic about whether people are using Firefox.

What a bunch of fucking inconsiderate cry babies. I don't think that Nick, Devin, or any of the other guys make a lot of change from the work that they have dedicated themselves to and they are asking for so very little. I think some of this has to do with how some of you feel about Devin anyway. You guys should be more grateful because this is without a doubt one of the best film-related sites out there.
I really hope it doesn't come down to payment for the MB.

I like CHUD so much, it's the first place I go to online.

Front Page First. Not The Message Board.

Devin is a great writer. And I don't agree with 70% of the things he says. I'm cool enough to have the ability to not let it sink under my skin like, it seems, so many of you are letting it. Shame about that.

I find it weird people are so against submitting news, I'd do it but I never see anything that's a "Scoop" and my email is never a 1 click quick type of thing so I always gotta log into yahoo but if I see something, heck yeah i'd submit it, I've only ever submitted once cause i'm not that quick a user.

As for bandwidthe, would it help if I went on the main page and clicked everything?
[That's not sarcastic backtalk to admins, I have nothing to do]

The site may not be directly involved in the "change" they make (it may well be though), but it has deffinately lead to what they are doing now. TV, Movies, Magazines, whatever they do.

Devin mate. You seriously need to calm the fuck down. No one attacks you, yet you feel the need attack EVERYONE who opposes an oppinion you hold or questions something you do. There is such a thing as civilised discussion.

Are you a little man? (I joke)

Seriosuly though, is it an online perosona to stir the pot or is it the real you?
Over the years I've never really read much of your stuff simply because you have a bad attitude. The word jerk comes to mind. So does arsehole (asshole for the Americans). If that' what you're aiming for, well done. Goal achieved. If not...

Still love Nicks stuff though. He has class.

Oh, and is anyone going to answer that question that was asked 50 or so times but ignored by all?

I'm off to the Corner. Then Dread Central. Shame the good people had to leave >.<

Why can't Devin just be NICE???

Jesus. Shut up and play the game already. The whole site is like that. This whining about "how things used to be" from both the Chewers and the Mods is asinine. I could do without every other person complaining about how mean Devin is (like some guy talking about a movie on a message board can really hurt your feelings) and I could do without Nick sighing heavily every couple weeks and talking about what a burden the boards are now and how he misses the days when everyone was friends and the board spun cinematic conversational gold on a daily basis before all these assholes took over.

Such thin skin here. I go to this board because people have an edge and because the conversations are biting and smart. Devin has added to that, not detracted from it. I was here two years ago and some things are different, but a lot more things are the same. There's still nowhere better to talk about movies. Be happy for whatcha got. I know I am. Pleased that it's here. Pleased that Nick et al. keep it free.

I think Devin is one of those guys you can tell exactly what he looks like by the way that he responds to people. Looks considered, I suppose we should take it easy on the guy.

(Hey, this does make me feel better!)

From Nick:

That said, these boards become more and more expendable each day. It's a shame too, a slot of very important friendships were born out of this.
This was the most interesting sentence in this entire thread. What financial/emotional/social/intellectual benefits or enjoyments do the boards no longer provide? Have they just grown tiresome? I've taken long breaks over the years, I don't know how the admins can maintain the same level of committment. It seems like a full time job to me.

Devin, to answer your initial question, I think that those who post news do it for one of three reasons:

1)Ignorance: they don't understand or know of the policy;
2)Confusion: they don't know that what they are posting is, in fact, news (particularly if they spotted it online already;
3)Rebellion: they resent being asked to contribute to the site, perceive such a request as being a forced servitude, and they do indeed want to be the one to spread the news.
