Star Wars Celebration III: Fans = Assholes(?)

Thread Starter
A co-worker's husband and young son drove to Celebration III on Saturday with some other friends. I was invited but couldn't make it. This morning I asked my co-worker how her husband and son enjoyed it. They didn't.

Everything started out fine. While they did have to wait in line, they were approached by someone offering them special passes for $5 dollars. These passes, I think from the Star Wars Fan Club got them access to see George Lucas give one of his three presentations. After this however, it was all downhill.

It was so crowded they could barely move. They were pushed and shoved by fellow 'fans' and in fact her son (who is 5 or 6) was pushed down numerous times. On one occasion, he was standing with one of the actors waiting to get his picture taken when two 'older' fans actually pushed the kid out of the way so they could get their picture taken. I mean COME ON! WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT ABOUT?!

Also, from what I understand, and one of you can correct me if I'm wrong, but they were guaranteed two of the special Darth Vader figures with the tickets they purchased. However, when they arrived to purchase them they were informed that they were sold out. Later in the day they saw numerous people carrying around cases of these figures. Cases! What kind of selfish asshole would have the nerve to carry that many around when so many other fans didn't receive any.

Also, the prices for some of the toys was twice as much than at a Wal-Mart down the road. How can these distributors justify charging so much? If it wasn't for the dedicated fan base of Star Wars to begin with they wouldn't have anything to sell. Instead of offering specials and one-of-a-kind collectibles, they rip us off any chance they get.

Some of you will undoubtably say that my friends had an unforunate experience and that you had a great time. But I know how some of these fanboys can get. I've been to my share of conventions. They become so self absorbed and pass themselves off as super important for some reason. Like the more time they've dedicated their life to (insert genre) the more privileges they should receive at these conventions or something. I can't explain their egos in these situations.

Now, I am a huge Star Wars fan. Really, I am. I grew up on it. I still have all the toys from when I was a kid and still follow the movies and everything, but this type of behavior makes me sick. A 'community' of fans shouldn't be pushing each other around and hording all the collectibles for themselves only to tun around and sell them to other fans. It should be a place where you feel more at home than at home. Surrounded by fellow enthusiasts you should be exchanging stories and phone numbers. But not anymore. You need to bring at least $500 cash and wait in line for days in advance to get anything at all.

Standing from a block away looking at the line of fans that stretches around the building I can only think "the RCA Dome...you will never find a more wretched hive of greed and selfishness."

Sorry to hear that. The last two "celebrations" sounded similarly clusterfucked. I know Lucasfilm enjoys and promotes this rabid, insatiable lust to buy merch, to line-up to buy merch, to buy tickets to line-up to buy merch...because it all feeds the hype machine for not only the new movie but also because it gets fanboys in a lather to camp-out to buy tickets to line-up to buy merch. All because George needs a new pair of shoes.

The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded.

I went to the first two, the one in Colorado and the one in Indianapolis. Both were horribly unorganized and overcrowded. At every one the fan-base has been completely underestimated and mistreated. There seemed to be a lack of funding at all of them as well. They should have had the heart to dish out a lot more cash for these things. We all know that the money is available. I think Star Wars fans have pretty much been shit on at all of these events. The people who run these things are out of touch, really.

My experience wasn't completely awful, but I saw some crappy stuff happen to good people. It's a shame. And I encountered some real shitheels as well.

I expose my children to the movies but shield them from the fans.
Reading stuff like this makes me feel very disconnected from the rest of Star Wars fans. I've loved these films since childhood, but certain fan behavior just always makes me scratch my head, like dressing up as a stormtrooper, or the need to buy every last piece of merchandise that has the Star Wars logo on it.

I suppose its that I love the films (how they were made, etc.) more than the universe, and will always be more interested in say, the motion control technology that made the X-wing models appear to fly as opposed to some fictional description about how the ship actually flies, or who built it, or what kind of armament it carries.

Hearing the story above, or how apparently fans waited in line over six hours to get some ridiculous action figure while a nearby exhibit featuring actual props and costumes from all 6 films was relatively deserted is rather depressing.

i haven't heard bad things from some friends who attended... but i don't doubt anything you've said...

Sith Lord, don't be an ass. What's the point of a racist slap like that?

I admire the dedication of the guy who plays Kit Fisto- he even has the same hair.

Racial remarks like that are ignorant and juvenile, not to mention offensive and wrong.

Luckily for me, Star Wars fans do not constitute a race, so I can say "Locking the doors to that convention and torching the building would have drastically improved the gene pool", and not feel bad about it at all.

I knew I detected some sort of laid-back So-Cal attitude eminating from Kit. Just didn't know the source.

Alright, I was at this event, and I can give some more firsthand info on this. The passes they got were probably "friends and family" fan club passes which members of the fan club can use to get non fan club members into fan club only things, like getting in an hour early and entry to the fan club lounge. These passes did not guarantee anyone to get to see George Lucas or any action figures.

Now, with their one day passes they could each purchase one action figure, but they were not guaranteed any. Also, there is no way they were told after waiting in line for the store that the action figures were sold out because we never sold out. I worked in the store, and we were still selling the palette of figures from Saturday on Sunday. After the convention was over we still had 20 or 30 boxes of figures left at least. No one who waited in line for the store was refused an action figure. More than likely what actually happened was that they arrived at the store after they stopped letting people in. Only a certain amount of people were let in the store line per day and typically the line filled up in the first hour or hour and a half of the convention.

And just to clarify on the cases, if someone bought a large enough order of merchandise, we would give them a box to put their stuff in. Usually they still only had 4 or 8 figures, which is allowed if you have the right badges or number of badges. Most people spent several hundred dollars in the store, and thus we gave a lot of people boxes. Also we had a lot of actioan figure cases we had to get rid of so putting merch in them was an easy way to do that.

Now, about the fans, yeah there were some pricks there, but most of the people I encountered were good guys or girls. For example, while people were in line for George Lucas in the middle of the night while it was 40 degrees and raining, some of the attendees and I, as well as one of the actors from the movies, handed out hot chocolate to people in line.

Really, the worst people I met were the 501st, working security. They were dressed up most of the time and they still gave everyone a lot of grief. Really though, it doesn't surprise me that some fans got crazy, but I never experienced anythign like that.

Oh, one last thing, the only toy that was sold in the official store was the Darth Vader exclusive, which cost 15 bucks mainly because you couldn't buy it anywhere else. The only other toys sold at the convention were sold in the exhibit hall by private groups. Don't get them confused.

Alright, so if anything else needs to be clarified, just ask.

Haha, someone just went all Jedi on Sith Lord. Awesome.

I have a question, Kueller. Did the Han Solo bodyguard protecting the only cute (and, to put it bluntly, socially acceptable) Slave Leia have to pistolwhip any gross fanboys for getting too close?

Not that I noticed. Actually, whenever a slave Leia came through somwhere a sort of bubble would form around her, as if people were scared or something.

I was there for saturday also, funny thing is that I had those passes, but I was not asked for them! But then again, I got in line to see Lucas at about 4 am, in the rain, and in the cold. To me it did seem like they just did not think that a so many people would show up, I was in line for about 2 hours to get into the store, and once I got to the door, it was going to be another 4 hours and whats funny is that I did not care about the Darth Vader figure, I just wanted a damn T-shirt! And Kueller is right, the only special toy you could get was that Vader one, and they had plenty, the other figures you saw where sold by collectors, so it's not greedy lucas, it's the greedy Collectors. Thank god I packed food into my backpack, paying 3 bucks for water is way too damn much! Again, being sold by the convention center, not Lucas. While it was busy as all hell, nor once did I see any kids getting pushed about, hell, everyone I met was nice and respectful of everyone, including the kids. So I don't give a rats ass on what that other guys "friend" thought, I had the time of my life. and I saw that Leia, and damn....nice

The interesting thing about the Lucas thing was that at about 3am they merged the non fan club and the fan club lines so no one needed the passes. Also, where in the line were you? Did you get any hot chocolate?

there was another pic of a slave leia who didn't do the outfit justice... didn't quite fill it out enough to make it fit

I ended up being about 20 feet from the door to the Hyatt, and we handed out the hot chocolate to people from the door to about 50 feet or so into the dropoff area that had some decent cover.

I saw that little girl the first day while in line and got a pretty good pic of her.
oh well, the hot coco would have hit the spot, if you guys really wanted the action figure, Starwarsshop.com has it. I ordered mine when I got home, as I did not want to stand in line all day for it.
And they have the damn cases! agh, Three of my figures don't have them because we ran out on Sunday. All we had left were teh backs of them. They need to seell those cases separately as well cause I know there are several thousand people who want them.
It was awesome! I don't know why you guys are bitching!

I was shoving kids right and left!
the cases? do you mean those plastic things that go over and protect the figure? you know, from kids that might want to play with them? ha ha
post #28 of 114
Damn, I have to say that I would like to have seen that Lego Republic Star Cruiser up close. That was pretty sweet looking.

OK people, come on, time to get serious: we all know why we're here. Would someone like to link to a picture of the Slave-Girl Leias?

While I don't normally go in for bathroom humor, this one gets me...
And the other one is just a damn clever take on "put yourself in the picture," down to even having the little notch at the top for the hanger.

A. Not that is matters a shit, but Lucas is not Jewish.
B. But you are an asswipe of a troll, and WIll be reported as such.

I got burned out on Fan Coventions of all types a long time ago. It not so much the asshole behavior but the rampant stupidity that gets to me. And I have noted it is the stupidiest people at these cons who put on the intellectual wannabe airs.
The last Star Wars gathering I went to, at the end of the day I was ready to cut in two with a light sabre the next fool who uttered the nate "Joseph Campbell".
As for the Merchants, hell, if they can get suckers to pay twice as much for something at a Con then they would at the Target down the street, I consider them the Force's way of punishing stupidity...

<edited above to remove 2nd pic. Nothing to see here, move along. It was just proving that miracle bra works wonders, that's all. Cough, gasp, blush, hack. These are not the pics you're looking for...>

Here's the pic I MEANT to put up.

And Devin, to be nerdbaiting, there has to be more squishybits under the illusion. At least, I HOPE there'd have to be.

These are actually fun when you can circumvent the crazy lines.

I had a blast. Of course, that probably had nothing to do withing hanging out with Amy Allen and Orli Shoshan much of the time.

I do seriously understand any frustration and anger those who were stuck in the lines must feel. GenCon just doesn't seem to get it. You can't run a Star Wars show like a gaming con. Just won't work.
That was really a wonderbra?

Anyway, I think we've established that being a girl is nerdbaiting enough. In fact I think Countess Anna was the only female poster ever incapable of nerdbaiting.

There were PLENTY of nerds and LOTS of nerd-baiting at this show. In fact, this one may have rivaled Dragon*Con in the scary geek factor.

Also, people... bathe yourselves! Christ almighty!

Isn't NERD B.O. a Con tradition?
No, B.O. is a NERD tradition.

"Nerdbaiting" - see front page picture of Jennifer Connelly (not that I'm complaining mind you). I'm just sayin'.
I don't care. The B.O. is unnecessary and inexcusable. Unless you are homeless or handicapped there is no reason why you can't take a shower/bath or put on some fucking deoderant.

And if you're huge and constantly sweating, please be considerate and at least bring some handi-wipes or something.

I've seen con staff at other cons threaten to strap on frebreeze bottles like six-shooters.

Here's a Foamy cartoon that addresses that....http://www.b18c5eg.com/illwillpress/ , scroll to #53 AKON RULES.
