I showed up late for the party and missed the picture of the breasts.

Also, nerdbaiting is when you leave a mint condition original Luke Skywalker action figure in a snare. Nerds are easy to trap, but when cornered, they become aggressive and spray you with their horrible odor.

It's a lot like playing poop-dollar, only more depressing.

Thppppppt.

Scratch, there was a shirt involved, you didn't miss much, unless you're a Ramones fan.

Correct me if I'm wrong Devin but I believe nerdbaiting is when a female will do things (flirt, show pics of themselves online, dress to show off their stuff at conventions, etc) to bring attention to themselves all the while knowing that 99.9% of the audience is male. Thus they are guaranteed little to no competition from other females.

Prime spots for this type are of course movie message boards and fan conventions.

Also, nerds have a stigma attached to them that they are unable to get a girl in real life. This belief by a nerdbaiter helps fuel their interest in forums and conventions.

Eh. While I do appreciate their contribution to rock and roll/punk music, expecially the NYC/CBGB scene which brought them to the forefront of public consciousness, all their music kind of sounds the same to me.

Breasts, on the other hand, are like snowflakes. Heaving voluptuous snowflakes.

There is a poet in every man's soul.
That was definately...poetic.

And I'd like to point out (in regard to nerdbaiting because there's no competition from other women, which is silly, to me. Learn to compete or get out of the gene pool) that nerdism and geekiness can be sexy, in moderation. It's like big dumb jock qualities can be fun at times, but too much spoils it.

This, unfortunately, happens all too often.

It takes a very special figure to properly fit in a Lum costume, for instance. It is very easy to be either too skinny or too heavy, or just plain shaped wrong.

This fails to deter too many women (or a few guys).

Being a Geek Whore is the latest rage these days. It's easy and cheap to do, too! You will need...

1 - Invader Zim plush, patch, or backpack

1 - Fuzzy overpriced "Japanese" cat ears

5-10 - Indie publication graphic novels

1 - Obligatory "I Heart Geeks/Nerds" T-shirt

No shame.

It's an easy relationship path for the girl who feels too pretty to be single but knows she's too ugly to be considered a hottie. Set your sights low and eventually you'll meet a comic book nerd who looks like he could maybe be in a band.

Ok, I'm safe, then. I turned Invader Zim off halfway through the second ep on the DVD, I lack cat ears, but if I have have the desire, I can pick them up for a buck, and I don't have that shirt. I do have a bunch of Girl Genius, Cerebus, and Strangers in Paradise comics, but hey.

And I have shame. It's a secret shame, but I have it.

Sorry to hear stories like this, but its bound to happen. I attended C2 and had a blast for the most part.

Yes, there were lines, but the best way to deal with them is to avoid them. So many other things to do and see. Lines are for the merchandise whores and autograph seekers. I nabbed one autograph and it took a total of twenty minutes from getting in line to meeting the actor.

Going into it I knew the lines would a fucking pain. So I made a decision to stay the hell away.

I need to edit the footage together sometime, but the best thing to do there is to watch the people. Some real freak shows, I recall some retarded jedis, an Irish Han Solo and guys in cheap bounty hunter outfits as far as the eye could see. For all the geeks and Darwin experiments gone awry, there were some truely awesome costumes on display.
I recall this one couple who dressed up as Han & Leia from ANH and the next day came back dressed as Han & Leia from Empire, their costumes were fantastic. Everything was perfect right down to their hairstyles.

There was this one dude dressed as a Wookiee. He stood at least 7 or 8 feet tall. It was hilarious to see the groups of people following him around like he was some hairy deity.

Of course the obligatory, skanks too- fat- for- the- costume dressed as Slave girl Leia, are always present.

The bad side of things were/are the smelly people. I don't fucking get this and this is one of those stereotypes that is absolutely true. At every con I go to, there are always the slow-witted mouth-breathers who just cant seem to find the soap. The last con I went to, in Tulsa Oklahoma had an ugly fat chick who apprently didn't like to shave her legs as it looked like she had Whoopie Goldberg in a scissor hold. It was apparent too that her boyfriend, hubby, hostage didn't mind either.

Of course youhave to just take this crap in stride and have fun with it or your time will be ruined. Most of the time, the people are more entertaining than the actors/events etc...

Overall, it was a great time, my only regret is that I didnt get to meet some of the chewers who were there, well, that and the rumor about Kenny Baker dressed in a gold suit telling dirty jokes in a bar downtown.

OhioJones - A very shitty situation indeed (What can be done in improving the scene when 30 to 50 thousand fans (Of differing degrees) show up to an event like Celebration

1. The exclusive figure at a Celebration continues 2 B a Farce
Alledgedly the clerks (If you'd like 2 call them that) were being trained Wed nite-Thurs morn, No wonder it was takin' upwards of 7 hrs. to get into the C-Store. All weekend I was (Seeing, Hearing) some who had their badge punched - didn't have badge punched (Depending on who their clerk was) when making a figure purchase .... WOTC, GenCon Etc. take care of these details if your going 2 run these Cons

2. Extreme FanBoyz Egos - Egotism is the pain that dulls Stupidity! There will always B bad apples in the crowd

3. I'm a Canadian who used C3 as a way 2 meet 2 mates from the U.K for the 1st time since I began contributing to their 'SW' Fanzine 2 yrs. ago (Awesome) .... The 'SW' community is still growing, If certain people want to have money, greed rule their experience, then let them

Litmus - Capitalism at it's finest - I wouldn't blame it all on Ol' Flannelled one, He does put most of the bling back into his Work and Passion

SithLord - Relax!

ScottieFerguson - That deserted nearby exhibit you talk of had it's line-up capped most of the weekend because of it's length, Not whining but I didn't even get into the Archive in 4 days .... Deserted ???

4. The Sat. Lucas thing - The line-up for said program started Fri nite (9 pm-ish), then it began raining I joined just before midnight #248-Honor system (Rain with Wind gusts beginning), The 501st were their in shifts (Thanx), Volunteers and a couple of nurses (Concerned with Hypothermia) were about. At about 3:30 am GenCon Etc. decided to move us (Approx. 1,200 -2,000) people inside to the Hyatt skywalk and start queing us up for the 1st 8:45 show, able to then catch up on sleep, Yellow markers handed out at 6:00, let into Sagamore Ballroom (Very Orderly) for 8
IMO - very cool, was worth all the crap!

5. The 5-2-1 Con rule: 5 Hrs. of Sleep a nite, 2 Meals a day, 1 Shower a day

D.T - That's one too many Park pic 4 me

I probably lined up the same time as you in the non fan club line and we got fucked over there. We ended up about a thousand people back and didn't get to even wait in line inside until 6. Also, there wasn't more than a thousand people inside when you went in cause when I was seated for the first show the room wasn't more than a third filled.
my apologees for the high approximation - It did seem like the number of people lining up on Maryland St. (Fan line) was huge, not being discouraged by the weather conditions (Just kept coming)
- people showing up in short sleeves + shorts (Mad!)

After we were inside It was hard to tell what was happening outside

In the Sagamore Ballroom (from near the front) was hard to tell how far back people were

I did hear that for the 3rd show - they were handing out markers to people just walking in from the street
post #71 of 114
And this Con was in the Middle West Heartland of America.
Think what it would have been like if it had been in California....

Yeah it kind of irritated me when I found out later that even the first show wasn't full. It was just that the way that so many people were talking about lining up at 9 or 10 that night that I was thinking all the shows would be full.

I was one of those people with short sleeves. I actually didn't even bring a jacket with me because it wasn't supposed to be cold like that.

I don't get it. At the 1st Celebration, the lines were god awful. Reports say the same at the next 2. At what point do they get it? I was pissed that I couldn't go untill I heard about the 7 hour lines and shit like that. If there is ever another one they really need to address the line situation.

Actually, C2 was not bad at all as far as lines went. C3 was just as bad as Denver, though.
After reading this thread, I would wait in an 8-hour line NOT to go to one of these things.
Here's the trick: Just figure out a way to get on staff or hang out with a VIP (and get a VIP badge yourself). You can walk right up and into ANYTHING at any time. No lines.
Ahhhh! Membership has its privledges

Actually I'm not bitter at any of my experiences at these Celebrations - Bad with the Good - C'est La vie
Line-Ups are enevitable, hopefully it gives you a chance to see what the better side of the 'SW' community is all about - Something Carl may be missing out on
I avoided the crap this time (Besides the weather) because of what I saw at Denver & C2 - made for a most enjoyable time

The next one (30th Anniv. in '07) will be even better .... Lisa Stevens (Fan Club Prez) when asked If a Celebration needed a Theatrical release to justify it - "No"

Mary Franklin, Jay Laga 'aia hinted at coming back

Steve Sansweet stated during the Opening ceremonies that he hopes Indy has them back

How could they not when Indy, Lucasfilm, Actors, GenCon (Whomever) putting it on makes the $Bling$ they do for 3-4 days
post #79 of 114
Celebration IV in '07 is definitely something that is on the drawing boards. I've personally spoken with them about it.

Now, whether or not it will be in Indy again remains to be seen. I know that the LFL folks like the location and the folks there in town. So it's probably at least a good possibility.

However, GenCon being involved in another LFL-sponsored convention is another story. After what I have heard I would be shocked if they were asked to organize another one. They made numerous blunders at CIII, worst of which were ones that were the same mistakes made 3 years previous. Besides, LFL can pretty much put one of these on all by themselves.

Frankly, they didn't just repeat mistakes, they made things worse.

On Sunday night while at a Celebration 3 Re-Cap Internet-Radio show, a person there spoke of being in a near-by Restaurant the previous night, he overheard a number of GenCon staff speaking rather negatively about 'SW' Fans .... they were unhappy with how early people were lining up Etc., Etc.

If they don't like the responsibilities that may come with running a Con attended by Enthusiastic Fans well maybe they 're in the wrong business ....
I've been to a few Cons. Honestly with new footage and Lucas there, if I had kids I wouldn't have taken them into that room. I'm sure it was like cattle in there and rightfully so.

As far as these old guys and their toys, in all honesty, some of that stuff will go up value significantly after 20 years or so. But, I think alot of them buy toys for...stranger reasons, recapturing youth, whathaveyou.

As far as paying, for instance, Ray Park $50 for a handshake and a signature, for me personally thats despicable. My ego won't allow me to go up to some actor that was in a movie once and give him the doe eyes and meekly shake his hand. Please, get some self respect.

Its your time and money though so, whatever.

One thing that I found interesting is that I saw maybe 5 GenCon employees the whole weekend. Most of the workers I saw were either temp workers or volunteers. I also saw a significant number of ESG security people, but still rarely saw GenCon people.

Tom Hodges came to a little get-together we had at CIII and he claimed Vegas was the most likely spot for C4. Any validity to that?
They're looking at lots of places, Indianapolis and Vegas among them. I'm thinking they'll try and nail something down by the end of this Summer, because you have to book these convention centers FAR in advance... and there will only be a two-year period between them this time.

Vegas would be an awesome location for it, though... for numerous reasons.

"I have a question, Kueller. Did the Han Solo bodyguard protecting the only cute (and, to put it bluntly, socially acceptable) Slave Leia have to pistolwhip any gross fanboys for getting too close?"

WTF????

I'm sooooooooooooooooooo sorry you guys only saw 1 good looking Slave Leia, but I think we all looked great. 1st of all, it takes a lot of guts to get out there in a costume like that. But, then I have to remind myself that you guys probably have never seen a naked women in real life and think all women look like they do in anime, comic books, and movies. News flash, REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES. Secondly, making fun of fans in costume is just plain mean! Seriously, why make fun of something that makes people happy???

"Really, the worst people I met were the 501st, working security. They were dressed up most of the time and they still gave everyone a lot of grief. Really though, it doesn't surprise me that some fans got crazy, but I never experienced anything like that."

WTF, again! All these guys did all weekend was bust their butts for you guys!!! They never slept, and never got to do anything fun, because they had to reign in all you cranky, rude, and ungrateful so called "fans." That's right, they paid to get into the convention same as you, and worked all weekend FOR YOU. So show just a little gratitude.

Oh, and by the way, the 501st were able to raise over $15,000 that weekend for a sick little girl, Katie Johnson (www.forkatie.org), who has terminal cancer, and they continually do charity work and raise money for the "Make a Wish Foundation." What have you guys done for anyone else recently except whine and bitch about Fat Ugly Slave Leias, and rude Stormtroopers?

Sincerely,

One of the Ugly, and socially unacceptable Slave Leias at C:III.

P.S.

Enjoy the picture of me looking "ugly" in my Slave Leia costume.

16 hours of volunteer work got you a free ride. I know because I volunteered in the store.
Also, doing charity work doesn't allow you to be an asshole.

That's being more than just a bit idealistic, don't you think? The 501st is not at all the group of all-encompassing benevolent souls some make them out to be. Like any other group of its size it has become near corrupt and is replete with people who are in it mainly for their own agendas and suspect motives. They also showcase a sense of entitlement and believe they have ownership over the SW costuming thing. This is, in part, Lucasfilm's fault because they continue to feed the monster's ego. But there are some of us who can see right through all of it. Sure, many members of that group are simply big time fans who are in it for the fun and to help others. But indeed there are some who are in it for their own selfish reasons... and there are some who are flat-out assholes, as has been claimed in this thread. So, please don't make them out to be some group that does nothing but help others for completely unselfish reasons. No one who has even a cent of knowledge about what has gone down with the 501st over the past few years will buy that.

True. But what you have failed to disclaim is that Katie Johnson is the daughter of Albin Johnson, the founder of the 501st. Who, by the way, was partying at Celebration III for 4-5 days while his daughter was assumably bed-ridden with her terminal illness back home in North Carolina.

Remember, "Heroes" have many faces.

You like costuming... that's great. I am not one of those who will mock you in here. Do what you want. I personally find the whole costuming thing completely harmless and only those who take it too seriously or too far deserve any scorn. But for the most part the fans who costume just do it because it floats their boat and they have fun with it. Good on them, I say. I have no problem with it. Just don't try to sell me on the sainthood of the 501st and other such groups, because I know better.

This is a shocking accusation you're making, and I hope you have the proof to back it up.

The very nature of your post and the paternal relationship it describes implies that this man - a man who founded a Star Wars costume club - has had sex. With a woman.

That's not a reality I'm prepared to accept.

One reason I got out of active fandom was that I saw one too many groups that started out just for fun turn into some wierd kind of semi-religous outfit controlled by people whose ego was totally out of control.
I have to agree with my wife, who is a historical costumer of some skill, that the main problem with Star Wars costuming..and fan costuming in geenral. is so much of it is poorly done....
