Some Cell Phone Questions

I have just a few months left with my current provider and I'm thinking about switching to another service and upgrading my phone. I'm with Verizon right now and I have a little shitty Nokia. Verizon has the worst choices when it comes to phones (in my area anyway), so I'm thinking about going over to Cingular. I'm really enamoured with the Sony Ericsson s710a. I really can't wait for the day when one device is your phone/PDA/camera/music player/etc. That just makes me geek out. Anyway, the s710a is one step closer to that, IMO. My cell phone is my only phone, no land line, so a cell phone choice is more important to me than it may be to others.

So I'm wondering what you guys have, what you're happy with/unhappy with, suggestions, etc.

You can always buy a phone that your provider doesn't market and have it programmed/locked for your provider. It's more expensive that way because you don't get discount offers, but you get what you really want.

My Verizon plan came with a really sweet little LG camera phone.

I'm with cingular right now and I despide them. I get poor reception in buildings, they have overcharged me twice. Of course I have a really shitty plan and need to renegotiate. Maybe my area for Cingular is poor (Triad area, NC). But I've heard great things about Verizon from friends and family....

I've looked into that. But it seems that all the phones I would prefer are made for GSM networks. So either way I would need to change providers to get what I really want, as Verizon uses CDMA. I guess what I'm really wondering is if a switch is worth it. If anyone's on GMS with Cingular, T-Mobile, etc. how satisfied are you with what you're getting from them? Has anyone used both types of networks and found one to be better?

Can anyone tell me where I can find a how-to on how to convert a phone from GSM to CDMA? I want to put a RAZR on my sprint account. Also, I've tried googling, so no "try google" comments, please.

I think that's a hardware thing, not a software thing. In any case it's impossible. Here's something I found from a search:

I'd like to clear this Nokia CDMA phone question once and for all:

It doesn't matter which current Nokia CDMA phone you have, or whether it has a R-UIM slot at the back or not, your Nokia CDMA mobile phone CANNOT be converted for use with a GSM network. CDMA IS-95 (or CDMA2000) and GSM are COMPLETELY different mobile telephony systems, and they're totally incompatible.

There's ABSOLUTELY NO WAY a CDMA phone can be converted for GSM use, or vice-versa. If a friend of friend of a cousin says they've managed it, then they're most certainly lying (or maybe not. Maybe they're just insane!).

What does exist is the possibility of activating a CDMA phone through either OTA (over-the-air) authentication, or using a UIM (User Identity Module) card. This UIM is similar in appearance to a GSM SIM card, but only in appearance because they're also incompatible.

Now, the activation method is a choice that your CDMA provider makes at the time of deploying its network, it's not a user choice. If your CDMA provider uses OTA activation, then you're stuck with it and only roaming visitors will be able to use their UIM-activated phones. And vice-versa.

And I did it with a Google search too!

I also have a few months left on my plan with Verizon, and would like to stay with them, however I'd like to get a shiny new phone, and it seems like the bone you in the butt if you try to upgrade through them directly. Is there a cheap way to keep my number, but get in on a cheap phone deal as well, while keeping the same carrier?

I just switched (from Sprint- which I'd never go back to) to Cingular. I've been happy with them so far, but I've heard crappy things. I got a decent little Motorola phone for free for switching.

But if you'd really like something that does cool stuff, think about investing is one. A friend of mine recently bought a higher-end Nokia that does a bunch of stuff and he loves it. But as with most stuff, if you want really nice options, you gotta pay.

I'm happy with my free phone for now.

Amazon usually has great deals on phones and plans. Assuming they've got the right provider/phone/plan online, you can even make some money in the process, after all the mail-in rebates come back. Almost makes me wonder how they make any money off of those deals....

Me and my wife both got phones for free from Cingular. The plan (Friends and Family) we have has free cell to cell, long distance and all that shit. Since they joined with AT&T just about anyone we talk to is in the same network so we don't use hardly any minutes. I think we are rolling over about 700 a month. The reception is good but in certain areas it can go to shit. However I think it's more of a problem with the phone than the provider as we have friends with Cingular that have no issues when we do. The good thing is I can replace the and just move the SIM over. For now it suits my needs very well.

I have been with Cingular for about 4 years now and really haven't had any major problems with my service. When I had questions about my bills or other queries, I called Customer Service and they were handled promptly. I moved at the beginning of the year and did have a little trouble getting my new local number established, but there was some confusion and they thought I wanted a new number, when I just wanted to relocate.

I ended up getting a new phone at the end of the year and though it was a phone that Cingular sells, I bought it from Amazon. At the time, Amazon had a special offer that if you activated the phone through them as a new customer and signed up for either a 1 or 2-year service agreement and then submitted a copy of your receipt etc., you could get a refund check for the full amount paid. The phone was $150, hence you get $150 back. Needless to say, there was some laziness on my part and I missed the small print about not being an established customer, so I forfeited the money back. I think if you bought the same phone from Cingular, they would give you either $50 or $100 off the purchase price if you signed a 1 or 2-year agreement.

The phone I got is the Motorola V551 and has these features:
  • Quad-band GSM phone with built-in Bluetooth
  • Integrated VGA camera with 4x zoom and video capture
  • MP3 ringtone capable
  • Features EDGE high-speed data network compatibility
  • Conference calling and integrated hands-free speaker

I did several weeks of research before deciding to purchase this particular phone and so far have been very pleased with it. The price of the phone has gone down about $50 since I purchased it, too.

Prior to the Motorola, I owned two Nokias and while I think that their phones have easier menus to navigate, I wanted a flip phone. Nokia has a flip phone coming out in the future, but I didn't like how it looked and I heard it was going to be fairly expensive.

Since Cingular joined up with AT&T, service and other features have gotten even better.

Good luck in making a decision.
