Blade Trinity UNRATED

Well if you hate the theatrical cut, you'll probably hate this more. Not an improvement. It basically adds in bad dialogue/acting that deserved to be cut. And Blade's strange scream towards the heavens when Whistler blows up.

"Ever since i could remember, there's been this KNIFE OF SADNESS in my heart." -Biel

ugh

What a shame. I thought about picking this up but theres no reason to with the way Goyer poochscrewed the final nail in the trilogy.

Special features and commentary sounded really nice though.

However, if anyone checks this out, there's no reason to get the R rated DVD.
The unrated DVD has both the unrated cut and the theatrical cut. Also, the unrated DVD has DTS, the R rated DVD does not.
Yeah the R rated is purely the rental barebones edition.

I didn't like the movie but out of loyalty to the franchise (I guess), and completnesses sake I purchased the EXTREME VERSION!!!!!!!!!!! of the movie. The movie still stinks but I just forward to the decent bits. The extras disc is pretty packed as well and I did enjoy watching the second disc. I realize that these guys/gals, Goyer in particular, cared about the franchise, but they simply just fucked up this time around. They could've got it but they didn't and the extras give you a good idea of what went right and what went wrong with the project.
I doubt that because I doubt Goyer can fess up how he mashed 3 different plots into this 3rd part of the trilogy and screwed up as a writer. Then I doubt he'll confess that as a director he fumbled the ball as well.

The problems fall squarely at his feet. Certainly not Snipes or the cast (although Posey and Purcell weren't right for their roles) who were game. New Line gave Goyer the golden key and he fucked it all up.

Please tell me the guy blames himself and comes clean. Doubtful he did that.

Hmph. Well at least there's some reaction.

Was the Blade boner in the theatrical cut, because I got about five solid 'What the fuck?'s out of that when I saw it on DVD.

Watch it again and tell me that didn't happen. Please. I'd prefer to have that be a crazy hallucination than something I actually bore witness to.

Oh that's great, now i notice it.
It's true, the camera HOLDS ON THE DAY-BONER.
that psychiatrist did what no woman could do in any of the BLADE films.
You're going to sue them for this, Wesley?

Oh goddammit, you had to get a screencap.

My god, what have I done? WHAT HAVE I DONE?!

PS: Parker Posey's performance in that scene was like watching Wilford Brimley singing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit': monumentally shitty but also quite funny.
Jesus Wesley.. Yes Parker was horrid there just awful.

How's the audio commentary with Goyer, Reynolds and Biel?

THe alternate ending is kind of fun, but pretty cheesy. The Werewolf looks so bad. Still better than the lame operating table endings in the theatrical and unrated cuts.

The gag reel has a bunch of alternate takes that are better than "I'm more of a David Hasselhoff fan".
"I'm more of a Kenny G Fan. THe early stuff, though. Before he sold out." is better.
And the crappy werewolf freaking out at the roulette table was pretty funny.
I laughed when Triple H ran after the car... That was silly.

I did like the vampire dogs, mostly just the Pomeranian. I thought it was pretty funny when King was scared by the lone Pomeranian, before the other 2 showed up.

The movie was very weak when compared to the first two. Despite the presence of dracula, it just felt very episodic and not epic at all, if that makes any sense.

***Possible Spoiler*** (though better to read them than watch the actual movie)

That's pretty much my take on the film, as well. It had cool Blade moments, Reynolds was funny and sadly the Pommeranian was the best villain in the movie. And seriously, after blade Took on Frost in B1 and then the whole bloodpack AND a slew of genetically engineered vampire mutants by himself in B2, am I supposed to believe that these goofs stand a chance against him B3. I mean, DRAKE was crap. the Posey, HHH possee was crap. No one seemed to be a threat to Blade on his own, not to mention with 2 deadly friends to help said Daywalker. A bunch of cool Blade fights (though poorly shot, --sidebar-- see the first fight in the vampire hideout in Blade 2 for a well shot vampire fight) mixed in with commercials and TV show clips. It felt like a bad episode of Buffy with cool guest stars and a bunch of celebrity villains with a crappy Mortal Kombat Annihilation battle at the end. Weak indeed. just watch it once so we can all suffer the POMERANIAN!!
I just watched the movie for the first time. I wasn't totally let down by it, but mostly because I read some reviews, so I was prepared for it to not be good. It certainly wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen. There was some good action, Biel is hot, and Reynolds is funny. The DVD was very nicely done though. Great picture, great DTS track. Yet another DVD that proves that Newline knows how to do it right.

Of that theres no question.
It's clearly the weakest of the three. I was dissappointed Hannibal King didn't get some payback for being tortured by Parker Posey, he got slapped around like a bitch.

Dominic Purcell was Colin Farrell-lite.

Wesley getting a boner is the best laugh I've had all day.
Just saw this, didn't bother to catch it in the theater and I'm glad. It's true, the little fuzzy dog is the best villian in the movie. Dracula totally sucked, the first time he meets blade he runs like a bitch then hides behind a baby- then later goes on about "honor". "Blade you fought with honor" give me a break. Reynolds had maybe two good lines, otherwise he seemed to be trying too hard. Blade just seemed bitchy and stupid. The fights were even worse than the WWF crap in Blade II (which I otherwise liked). A lame ass movie over all.
Not the worst movie ever made. I'll take it over 2 but niether really come close to the original. Maybe the combination of low expectations and paying nothing to see TRINITY give me cause to go a bit easy on it.

Quite good, and subtly revealing re: all the on-set Snipes problems...

Purcell could have been good with the right material...the other two films had well-developed villians, it's hard to believe this is the same writer.

I got this mostly because of Hannibal King and Abigail Whistler. Biel was a hell of alot of fun. (This is the first thing I saw her in.)
Great Presentation in every possible way from audio and video too commentaries and documentary... it's pretty much everything you want when you pick up a DVD. You know, minus the whole "good" movie aspect.

You're right, it is hard to believe Goyer wrote this...but then we may not have noticed the bad parts of the scripts from Blade 1 and 2 because they had way better directors. The Dracula thing is cliche yea....but it could've been done SO much better if Goyer wasn't at the helm. Plus, why did they say Dracula was from Ancient Sumeria? That would make him Sumerian....Purcell is German I think, not Middle-Eastern. Goyer totally ruined everything. I don't even want a Blade 4 now because Goyer will probably be directing it. Plus, why would the studio give this to Goyer when this is the second film he's directing? He's not polished enough to carry such a popular and rich series! DAMN I'M PISSED!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought the first two were great. The second seems to get a lot of bashing that I feel is unwarranted. The kineticism of the picture was really impressive. I wish that Del Toro had gotten a chance to helm part three. Furthermore I wish that they hadn't pussed out on this one. They should have gone with their original plan of putting Blade in a situation where despite his best efforts the Vampires had gotten the upper hand and essentially made themselves the dominant species ( I remember Goyer and Del Toro talking about this shortly after the release of Blade II). That would have been the best way to up the ante and end the series. I know they thought getting Dracula would make it some sort of endgame but it was just executed so poorly.

Ah well who knows, maybe in a few years they can end things right. Of course with this lawsuit and what not things look DEAD.

The original BLADE 3 idea was a Road Warrior type of thing. It would take place in a post apocalyptic future where vampires rule the earth.

I would love to see that film. I would have rather had them go for a grand slam with something like this and strike out instead of the weak pop-up to the pitcher that we got instead.

Wow, baseball metaphor in a Blade 3 dvd review thread...time for bed.

Born in England, raised in Australia. Classmate of Hugh Jackman. Or are you in some way talking about his character? If you are, I should just shut up then.

Would be cool, but in the first one don't they say that Blade ages like a regular human?
What I didn't get about Trinity is why the police didn't believe in the existence of vampires. Didn't vampires kill all kinds of people in the first two films? Surely with hundreds and hundreds of victims bleeding to death from bites on the neck someone would put two and two together.
I was getting the sense in BLADE TRINITY that some of the higher ups in the police force were working with the vampires. This could have been an interesting area to explore more of but that would have taken time from all of those awesome Ryan Reynolds one liners.

The commentary gives you a idea of what it's like to work with Snipes.

"In this scene, Wesley is supposed to open his eyes, but he didn't want to for some reason. So we had to DIGITALLY ADD EYES IN."

What a guy!

Other stuff:

-The scene where Blade Chews out the nightstalkers is called "the most realistic scene in the movie" by Reynolds. And Snipes really was concerned about what the nightstalkers would be wearing in the movie.

-Hints that Snipes didn't want to take off his glasses for certain scenes

-Snipes suddenly decided he wanted to jump up into something. When Goyer asked what they would do after that, Snipes said "I don't know, you figure it out." Things worked out pretty well though, This turned into the "forgot my sword" bit.

-The day they were shooting Blade's rescue, Wesley decided he wanted to walk out of the room alone. He was supposed to walk out of the room with Reynolds.

Well, we know that police chief was working with the vampires. However, the two police detectives who try to interrogate Blade seem to think the whole vampire business is just a big joke. Since we see in Biel's first scene that there are roving bands of vampires in the city feeding on humans on probably a regular basis, the detectives' ignorance is puzzling.
I think it would have been an interesting decision to do more with the police angle. The James Remar character and his partner did not seem to be working with the vampires so giving them more of a chance to investigate the police conspiracy with Blade probably would have been better than the story they went with. I guess for some reason I would want to see more James Remar instead of a blind Natasha Lyonne

Remember: It's Ryan Renolds as Jason Lee as Hannibal King.
You're right, Reynolds seems to be doing a total Jason Lee riff in BLADE TRINITY. I dig action heroes who can throw around a clever one liner but even TANGO & CASH would roll their eyes at most of his dialogue.

Thankfully, we were spared a Tango and Cash-like scene where Reynolds and Blade take a shower together and check out each other's packages.

True, but I would not have minded if Michael J. Pollard was the wacky gadget guy instead of Patton Oswalt.

When I saw Van Wilder Ryan did the Jason Lee bit - and he did it a little bit worse in Blade Trinity.

Anyhow - I did get the DVD - definitely not my favorite of the 3. It won't grow on me but my Blade collection is now complete.

Hilarious about that Blade crotch shot - that's on some Dolph Lundgren getting sweated by Brandon Lee in SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO:

Johnny Murata: Kenner, just incase we get killed, I wanted to tell you that you have the biggest dick I've ever seen on a man.
Chris Kenner: [nods] Thank you.
Okay, now that I've seen the unrated version, I like it more than when I hated it before because I knew hat to expect. Knowing that its not the great final film, and far below "Blade II", I appreciated it as the somewhat similar to "Blade" film it is.

Now, the endigs infuriate me. Its like two halves of a decent ending, spread over two cuts. The theatrical, IIRC has Drake saying "Let me do this favor for you", then he morphs into Blade and its him who is on the morgue table at the end. Blade then is free, out and about.

The unrated cut has Drake say that same line, then we get Blade waking up on the morgue table and beating up cops. We then get a decent line from Reynolds about how the virus didn't kill him, just put him in hibernation till he can one day walk the earth again. I like the line, but if he just woke up its sort of climactic.

The better ending would be the original visuals, including Drake in the morgue. But instead of showing Blade riding away, have the Reynolds line about sleeping, and show him buried away somewhere. Perfectly sets up a 4th film (that will now never happen), but worse case scenario, still at least gives us some open-ended possibilities to imagine for ourselves.
I couldn't really figure that out either.

But then, it's a hamfisted ending to an already clunky movie.
Hannibal King is a hardboiled detective in the comics. That shows you the idiocy of Goyer.

P.S. I liked the werewolf bit, just because he looked different than what they usualy look like.
