The Mummy: New Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider: The Prequel?

Hey I hear the new Mummy film is underway, who gives a shit? Does anyone enjoy the first film like I do, and at least get a kick out of Mummy Return's crumminess?

The Mummy is cool in that its a bit like an old serial, with adventure and monsters and curses and shit, and I think its been treated a bit unfairly. Sure its brainless, but it makes no claims to be otherwise. And it has extras being eaten by scarabs and Patricia Velasquez in body paint and not speaking English. Thats gotta count for something...

I really enjoy the first one, but don't care much for the second. It seems like they tried to cram too much into The Mummy Returns.

Who wants to bet that the third will be called "The Mummy Forever"?

What about "Mummy Begins"?

Mummy Returns was played on TV here the other night and the commercial for it had The Rock at top billing! I laughed cos' he's in it for all of 10 minutes and half of that time he's CG.

That is pretty laughable.

Well, I'll stand up for Mummy Returns. It's got loads more action and adventure than the first one, which suits me fine. Here's hoping Mummy3 sticks to that same balance.

Mummy Returns took a turn for the worse when the rocket-propelled dirigible turned up. But pygmy mummies are pretty cool. I hope Sommers goes back to a more "less is more" approach to SFX after the 2-hour migraine that was Van Helsing.

BTW, has anyone listened to Sommers' commentary on The Mummy dvd? Quite entertaining.

I really enjoyed both of the Mummy movies.

Speaking of the pygmy mummies, did anyone else notice the nod to Slim Pickens from the end of Dr. Strangelove? That was great.

Big fan of the first one and thought it was one of the better action/adventure movies I had seen in a while. I actually bought Fraser as an action star.

Hated Returns

I thought both were just plain fun movies. I kind of thought that they were pushing their luck with a second one though. Now that Somers is "The Man Who Made Van Helsing" I'm frankly sad for the future of this franchise.

Haven't they already used everything from Indy 1/2/3?
The first Mummy was a nice surprise, a lot of fun with some unexpected style, but the second, except for the pigmies and the London bus chase, andthe presence of Rachel Weisz, was not very good.
The problem Mummy Three might have is that, if Speilberg and Lucas can get their asses in gear, which is a huge given what we have seen, it might be up against Indy 4 and people will not go to a wannabe when the original is around.

If Rachel Weisz is not involved, that is a huge minus for Mummy Three. She is not only hot, she provided a lot of the style that made the first one good and kept the second from absolute suckitude, which it apporached at times.

Its funny how these days, anything that is complete shite is defended because its 'like old serials'.

Yeah, but I thought The Mummy was one of the few films that lived up to that description. Returns WAS complete shite however.

Speaking of Indiana Jones, are they ever gonna make that? And does anyone think it will be any good? I think if its more like The Mummy it could be quite good, as long as it doesn't take itself to seriously and keeps the supernatural element the Indy films are known for. And Harrison Ford kinda looks like a mummy now anyway

Sadly, I think Spielberg is overrated now, he's gone soft, and he may make a 'safe' film that won't be scary OR adventurous. And Lucas, well, we'll see next month I guess. I hope I'm wrong, but one thing I liked about The Mummy was the very Indy-esque blend of horror, humour and action.

Also, if Raiders was (as Spielberg says) about Judaism, TOD about Hinduism, and Crusade about Christianity, will Indy 4 be about, dare I say it... Islam?

Well we're allowed opinions, I just personally didnt get anything out of both Mummy movies (think the 2nd is one of the worst Hollywood movies of recent memory), and thought Sky Captain was a waste of potential and money too, 'serials' indeed!

Where/when did Speilberg mention this? Never heard of that soundbite before, but makes sense I guess. And yeah, might as well go Islam route for 4, but then again Hollywood and Islam dont really gell well together (havent seen Kingdom of Heaven yet though...).

Indiana Jones and The Mummy mentioned in the same thread title.

blasphemy!

Agreed. THE MUMMY is RAIDERS-lite schlock. I didn't want to see THE MUMMY RETURNS so I skipped it instead of editing the video to contain only Rachel Weisz. Sommers hasn't made a decent movie since DEEP RISING, which was aces and proved Treat Williams is a far better action hero than Brendan Fraser.

I'm sure I heard it somewhere, possibly on the video release a few years back that had interviews with Spielberg, Lucas and Ford.

I'll take the piss: I like 'em both. Save for CG Rock bullshittery, both films are just a lot of fun from end to end for me. I'll agree he pushed his luck with Returns, though (doesn't so much build on the old characters as it uses them to keep a flimsy plot interesting), and a third film minus one of the main reason both films worked already has a strike against it in my book.

P.S.--Every time someone disrespects Spielberg, an angel loses its wings.

I dig both Mummy flicks as well and enjoy their brainless thrills. They aren't as great as the Indy films but do well for themselves. I felt Mummy 1 was kinda like Temple of Doom crossed with a zombie horror film. Mummy 1 was a fun action flick that holds up very well to repeated viewings and is certainly better than that other CGI-fest with Jar-Jar that came out around the same summer. While Mummy Returns piled on the CGI to a nauseating degree, it had some fun moments. They now have a double pack with both films that I definitely want to pick up sometime.

I used it only as a source of comparison. Indiana Jones represents the pinnacle of the genre, Tomb Raider the, uh, shittacle

Don't get me wrong, Raiders is an absolute classic, TOD is a wierd hybrid of horror and comedy, and Last Crusade, has, well, Alison Doody and death by flock of birds. The Mummy is one of the few films in recent times to aspire to be Indyesque (there goes that word again) and I for one think its at least a good attempt.

And I have a LOT of doubts about Indy 4. I hope its more Raiders than Last Crusade (I could do without the dumbing-down of favourite characters, thanks), and I hope it keeps the humour and ditches the 21st century malaise currently affecting adventure flicks.

Mummy 3: To Save Steven Sommers Career

Beause that`s basicly what it is. I think they should forget everything that happened in those other films and use the new Universal Rollcoasting Ride as a selling point. Place the action today with new actors where you have a family being caught in a Ride that is the gateway to Hell in a sort-of setting like Temple of Doom and call the film, The Mummy 3: The Ride From Hell!

Raiders-lite shlock is a good description, but I don't think it was ever trying to be anything else than a fun night at the movies (at least it didn't try on any half-arsed attempts at 'pathos' a la Van Helsing).

Returns DOES feature girl-on-girl action with Rachel and Patricia in ROTJ-style metal bikinis! And Brendan Fraser, it must be said, sports a MAGNIFICENT neck in the film. Honestly, that thing is of positively Lucasian proportions.

For once I actually agree with cognizant.
And there have been so many attempts to do a "Raiders" type 30's serial homage film, and so few have beeen decent films.
BTW the 30's serials, when you sit down and watch one, are not all the great either.

Yeah there's a difference between something being "light and fun" and "slight and unsatisfying."

Although I really enjoyed the Rocketeer which has been criticized in much the same way as these films.
