Firefox Speed Boost.

I'm sure most of you will know this, but if you're on Broadband these settings will get you a boost of speed in Firefox.

1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

Wow, you're right. My pages are "popping" a bit more than "loading" now. Where'd you find the info?

Haven't really noticed anything faster yet, but my campus server is the suck. I'll wait till I get home before I judge it. Thanks for the info though.

I kept seeing one or the other on the web, and I would write them down. I had to set-up a computer at work and I lost the notebook. So I just did a search on google and found the settings all lump together at about 20 different sites. Thought I might as well put them on here. I noticed it working quite a bit quicker.

Did this when I first qot firefox, so I don't know how much it improves the performance. I do know that in total my firefox experience is MUCH faster than whenever I switch to IE for something.

Thanks for posting this. I've passed it around to the Firefox folks I know, and some of them (as well as myself) have already had a noticeable jump in speed. Mucho gratituso!

This stuff is not a great idea for webservers, that's why it's not enabled like that by default.

I understand it increases the overhead on the server by opening more connections. However, Firefox is there to be tweaked.

Theres a few more settings that can be changed that increase the server overhead even further, I didn't include them.

This is a semi-responsible config change to get a better browsing experience.

Made the switch to firefox three days ago, so much better to navigate, the tabs thing is such a space saver...

Anyways to configure it so that when you click a link that open in another window it opens in a new tab instead? It keeps happening when I go to CHUD main from Devins MB links, real irritating....

Awesome. Thanks for the info.

I think if you press CTRL when you click the link, it should open in a new tab... but then, I could be completely wrong.

It works, now to find out how to set it to automatically do that.

I downloaded the extension for Tabbrowser preferences. Then you can go to Tools>Options>Tabbed Browsing and change all the setting there.

I think thats what your looking for.

thanks for the way you explained at the beggining and yes it's a cut version. about the tabs you can manage this from advanced options at tool, without the extension

firefox is great combined with free download manager and some extensions, Noia 2.0 is a great theme too

try also adding your own choices at the search bar, and a dictionary included so you highlight and it translates or whatever "into" another page

wow. this is great. I agree with whoever said sites "pop" more than before. So I can actually start reading, or clicking on links before the page is fully loaded, rather than waiting for bits and pieces of the page to come in.

Great find.

I made the changes to my Firefox settings mentioned above, but thought I'd also point out this tool that I found on MajorGeeks.com.

FireTune for Firefox

I also discovered Portable Firefox that you can put on a thumb drive and run on a computer without having to install the browser should you want to use it instead of IE or another browser and don't have the administrative rights to install it.

Go to TOOLS - OPTIONS - ADVANCED and select "a new tab in the most recent window" in the section titled "Open links links from other applications in" under TABBED BROWSING.

How many beers did you have to slam before coming on here to do that?

Edit: Nice edit up there

Will this only help broadband connections or will it also boost Dial Up?

Yes, Im on Dial Up. Laugh at me, like they used to on the playground. Then when you least expect it...im gonna steal your fucking sandwhich.

I'll post this again after yesterdays AOL murdering session.

It will more than likely have no effect on you as a dial up user as you don't have a fat enough incoming pipe to allow for the extra connections.

As a side note here are my firefox extentions, I'm interested to know what extensions you guys have out there.

Have you tried Tabbrowser Extensions? Its features are really robust and somewhat overkill in its customization, but I really love it over Tabbrowser Preferences.

Yeah I have and it was cool, but more than I actually needed or wanted. The only thing I miss is being able to close a tab with a mouse gesture.
