Movies that you wish would get an anamorphic release

I just got a widescreen TV a while back, and am disappointed by how many of my older discs don't have an anamorphic transfer. The only one that I can think of off the top of my head is Breakdown, and there are several discs that I need to upgrade (like Conan, but I guess that doesn't count).

I dont have much to add but good call with Breakdown, I love that movie. *thumbs up*

Yeah, Breakdown's pretty great. I think that it's more than deserving of a special edition. Nothing fancy, just a new transfer and a decent commentary would work for me.

I know that there are a few others in my collection back home (I'm in school right now) that pissed me off by not being anamorphic. Just can't think of them right now.

GHOSTBUSTERS 1 and 2

Umm... the Ghostbusters 1 and 2 DVDs are anamorphic.

Guess I should add something to the list if I'm gonna complain about somebody else's post. Let's see... most of Fox's earliest stuff needs to be anamorphic, like True Lies and Mrs. Doubtfire. There are a bunch of others. Also, there was a time when Paramount had this bizarre non-anamorphic policy, so the menus are anamorphic but the films are not. Salt in the wound. Luckily, they've redone most of them, such as the Star Treks and the Jack Ryans. Primal Fear is one of the few that are left un-anamorphicized. I'm sure there are several more, but that's all I'm thinking of at the moment.

EDIT: Just remembered two more for the list. Both The Abyss and Brazil (Criterion) are fantastic sets in terms of features, but lack anamorphic transfers.

they are widescreen, but not anamorphic. I just checked my discs again.

Editing to add the Abyss love, need that one Anamorphic.

I swear I'm not trying to get in an argument here, but the region one releases of both Ghostbusters 1 and 2 are positively, irrefutably anamorphic. I've watched 'em many times anamorphically. Here's an excerpt from the DVDfile.com review of Ghostbusters:

Quote:
Compared to most of the dismal VHS versions out there, and the disappointing (and personally disparaged by Ivan Reitman) Criterion laserdisc, this disc is huge improvement. Presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio (which is essential as full use is made of the widescreen frame) and enhanced for 16x9, the transfer comes from a new high-definition master. However, the end result has both strengths and weaknesses.
Now here are specs on Ghostbusters 2 from The Digital Bits:

Quote:
108 mins, PG, letterboxed widescreen (2.35:1), 16x9 enhanced
I dunno what's up with your discs, but they SHOULD be anamorphic.

I've made copies of both discs for friends with dvd shrink, and whenever you analyze the discs it shows anamorphic as filling up the frame, whereas non anamorphic titles are relegated to smaller pictures surrounded by the letterbox bar areas taking up part of the 4:3 frame. Maybe I have defective discs, but on both of mine this is the case, especially when I watch them on my portable dvd player(with the screen attached) that auto stretches anamorphic films to fill its frame as well, these discs however are cursed then. I'll have to look into it. I'm not into getting into fights either. Thanks for the info though, I'll have to check it out.

The Shadow.

Another vote for The Abyss here, plus a boost for Conan the Destroyer, which shares the top spot of my Guilty Pleasure list with Supergirl.

And my Ghostbusters disc is definitely 16:9, though the menus and extras are 4:3. Maybe that's the source of the confusion?

I'va always liked the first Mission:Impossible, but region 1 has never got an anamorphic version so I've never bought it. When I was in Europe though, I saw it in anamorphic widescreen on the shelves. Lucky Europeans.

THE ABYSS for sure. Maybe TANGO & CASH.

My copy of GB is anamorphic too.

True. However, it isn't anymore. Columbia TriStar, in the Region 1 area, now only releases a full-screen version of Last Action Hero. Where as, in the past, they had released a flipper disc with an anamorphic version on one side and a full-screen version on the other. The flipper disc has been discontinued. It got discontinued well over a year ago. Additionally, the full-screen "only" versions have the same upc as the flipper discs. So, it makes it harder to find the elusive flipper disc.

I currently have the Japanese Region 2 superbit version. However, I have to watch it on my computer, because I do not have a seperate region-free dvd player.

I'll just wait till they release a special edition/superbit version or just wait for the HD incarnations.

Favorites that need Widescreen & Anamorphic:

Twins - Arnold's funniest movie
K2 - Intense mountain climbing drama
Frantic - A favorite Harrison Ford movie of mine by Polanski
Michael - A great John Travolta movie with William Hurt
Ace Ventura - No explaination neccessary
Just One of the Guys - Great 80's teen movie
Grumpy Old Men - The less funny sequel has a better DVD
Doc Hollywood - Guilty Pleasure
Taking Care of Business - Funny Jim Belushi movie with

Need just Anamorphic:

The Rocketeer - Fun Movie
Pushing Tin - Fueding Air Traffic Controllers, what can I say?
The Rock, Con Air, Crimson Tide & Days of Thunder - Why do all these Bruckheimer movies lack anamorphic?
I forgot about Con Air. I second that vote.
I also forgot about Armageddon.

As far as the The Rock goes, it is anamorphic if you get the criterion edition.
EDIT: I'm an idiot. Armageddon Criterion is non-anamorphic. Sorry.
