"War of the Roses" on crack? Possibly!

Brad Pitt fires a machine gun ON. A. TRICYCLE.

Isn't there an unwritten rule that there should never be more than one explosion in the trailer? I mean, wow. This is Doug Liman?
I think they should have went BIGGER with that Bazooka

That brings back loving memories of 'No One Lives Forever 2'.

It looked like a fun action movie, and damn did Jolie look friggin smokin in it.

I can see why he dumped that mess Aniston. Jolie seems like a firecracker.

I have to say I liked the teaser MUCH better than this new trailer. It just had a lot more style and humor to it than this one.

I also don't like that this trailer shows them basically having to fight side-by-side, thus nullifying any fighting that comes before. I'm sure some of you are saying "what did you think was going to happen?" and my response is that I thought one would kill the other because all the ladies will want Brad to win and all the guys will want Jolie to win. It doesn't really matter who as long as it's done with the tone indicated in the teaser.

But now after this teaser plus the pathetic first outing of Simon Kinberg with xXx, Mr. and Mrs. Smith has now moved from one of my most anticipated films of '05, to the recently-vacated-by-HG2G of "I'm praying this will actually be good." That's right, when I pray it isn't for world peace or an end to poverty. I pray that movies don't suck.

Yes, my priorities might be a bit out of order.
You really thought one of them would die?
For me, It just came off as an over the top action/comedy movie in both trailers. They'll fight, they'll have their domestic problems that people will laugh at, and they'll make up at the end.

Also, the first picture they released was from the "Team-up" scene, so I saw that coming.
I cant believe the negative reaction here.

For me it looks like it will be the most fun and cool action movie of the summer. You can totally see from the look of both trailers than the action sequences are purposely over the top and never takes itself too seriously. Plus, Vince Vaughn looks hilarious here.

And praying that a movie doesn't suck??? Please get a life.
I read that at Madame Tussauds they moved Jennifer Anniston away from Pitt and placed Jolie next to him, which I thought was both funny and took the piss.

Hey, it it's a fun two hours at the movies I will be satisfied.
My main concern is that although Jolie has shown she can do comedy, Pitt is a unknown factor whose comic talents I have never seen.
But that cardboard life size figure of her in my local theater plugging the film.....whoa, she has one killer body...

What??? I hope you meant the opossite.

Pitt has shown in both Ocean's movies and in Snatch that he is very cool at comedies. Jolie's only comedy recently was Life... or Something Like It, a movie absolutely nobody saw (me included).

Perhaps by "unintentional" comedy you meant Taking Lives, Beyond Borders, Tomb Raider 2 and Alexander. Then i agree with you

Pitt was the "straight man" in Both Ocean's films and Snatch, and let other actors handle the comedy. In "Smith" he won't have that option.
Actually it was the Tomb Raider films that made me say Jolie can do comedy. She played the role for what comic value she could get out of it, and IMHO was just about the only endurable thing about those films.

eck, just saw the trailer on tv and at first it had the whole Grosse Pointe Blank vibe going for it then I saw it was PG-13. I mean Grosse Pointe Blank was funny, even the action scenes were funny but they were also pretty brutal, so I'll pass.

When I first saw the teaser for this early this year it instantly became the most anticipated movie of the year for me. The cast had a lot to do with it but hearing that Doug Liman directed it put it over the top for me.

I did like the original teaser for it rather than the new trailer but the movie just seems fun to me, I’m really looking forward to it.

As far as praying goes yeah I pray, but not that the movie doesn’t suck I just hope I can withstand the urge to masturbate in the theater while watching it.

If it's a PG-13, we might as well kiss all the sex stuff they show in the trailer goodbye. I smell an unrated cut on DVD. Then again they might cut all the sex totally because of Brad-Angelina affair rumors. Remember Proof of Life?

Well im sure they knew it was going to be pg-13 from the beginning so im sure the sex stuff is pretty tame anyway but im worried more about the action. Don't get me wrong I wanna see Angelina naked as much as the rest of you(for like what the third or furth time?) but I tihnk the action should hold up, but with a pg-13....ehh I don't know. See all those explosions? Well the bad guys will just get knocked down and that brad and the henchmen will sit down and have a cup of tea and talk out their differences. Also been seeing trailers for the new longest yard, I knew they would puss out on that too but hey at least the Reynolds back.

The straight man in Snatch? Not even close. Jason Statham was the straight man.
There is an eppisode of Freinds where Pitt plays an ex high school friend of Ross/Rachel and Monica who hates Rachel, in that he plays comedy pretty well.

Im jazzed for this movie and i hope its great.

Just saw this with Nick today.

Fun film. It took me a while to get into it because the first 30 minutes or so came off a bit hackneyed and had incessant "comedy" music slathered all over it like fucking ketchup. But once they find out the truth about each other, the movie starts crackling. Liman really steps up his action directing game here, Jolie is endlessly smoking, and Pitt has comedic chops to spare. The end mega-shootout almost reminded me of The Transporter in how absurd it got at times, and I mean that in the best possible way.

I was also pleasantly surprised to see that a lot of the moments in the trailer exist here in very different takes, so the movie feels fresher.

I was even more pleasantly surprised that this was written by the same guy who wrote the execrable XXX2, although this script has been touched by so many screenwriters at one point or another, who knows exactly how much of this is his?

Anyway, if you go in thinking of a smaller scale, but no less fun True Lies, you won't be disappointed.
So, did Nick liked it too?

And what about Adam Brody and his Fight Club T-Shirt?
So its shaping up to be as good as the premise sounded?

Good stuff

Very much so. Unfortunately, Brody's not much to this film. Just a plot device and a few scraps of screen time.
I found it to be charming and exceptionally well shot. Pitt's great, Jolie's great, and they are so damn gorgeous that I could watch their trite domestic life stuff and be amused. But, with tons of fun action scenes it's even better and Vaughn's solid comic relief. I'll pop a review up sometime soon.
Sounds like the goods. This is one of the few movies I've really been looking forward to these past couple of months after seeing the trailer.

Different line in the finished film, but it's funny as well. I think it was either GQ or Esquire that had an article recently on Pitt being the funniest actor working in films today, and he steps it up here. Just so many little tics and perfectly timed lines to his performance.
I agree that Pitt is a funny actor. ButI think this has more to do with the fact he is actually a GOOD actor.
He and George Cloony are both fine comedic actors.
Man, this news is such a relief. I know don't agree with Nick and Micah 100% of the time but positive word from both certainly makes me far less anxious about this film.

I'm not. It looks and sounds like a blast.

I did kinda hope that they'd let them duke it out to the death and shoot two endings - one for the boys, one for the girls - a bit like a gender-remake of King Kong vs Godzilla, even though they never really shot two endings for that.

I just like the idea of the projectionist doing a head count of male and female in the audience before deciding whether to go with the "Brad wins" or "Angie wins" final reel.
A good fun movie, according to Nick.
That is all you can ask for from this kind of film.
It is incredible how many of this kind of film, though, fail to deliver the goods.
My wife and I will definently be seeing this one.
I also think it might do not just well, but very well at the box office. and might even hold up decent against "Batman Begins".
It looks a little cheesy, but i've liked all of Liman's films, so I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Anyone have any idea what Nick was talking about in his review wrt Liman's personal problems?
Looks like a total blast to me. I just hope that during the domestic dispute between Angelina and Brad it's not totally one sided.
Did your People magazine not show up in the mail this week, Grofield?

Was at Rotten Tomatoes earlier and found this comment by a Reviewer/Cockstain that pissed me off something fierce:

Quote:
if you’ve got a script full of fatuous repartee and an inept director (who was banned from the "Bourne" sequel), you’re not going to have an entertainment worth diddlysquat.
I wonder if the imbecile knows that Liman (not only a director who is popular and has a resume of movies that have been very well accepted, and who's movies get bigger and bigger profile as they go) was infact the executive producer of Supremacy?
With a name like Cockstain, what did you expect?
I'm a Liman fan, but IIRC that title doesn't necessarily mean much.

The Irish bar...

Did anyone catch the name of the Irish bar in NYC that Pitt went into? I loved the logo artwork but I can't remember the name...doubt it's a real bar, though. Any help would be great. thanks.
I laughed more during this movie than any "comedy" that has come out all year. To me the action was just there - it was the humor that made the movie.

Although the fist fight between the two of them was awesome. If only the few cheesy moments were gone - this would have been outstanding instead of just really great.
Enjoyed this one quite a bit, although I had one problem. Whenever there was a comedic touch, or a little quip it seemed like throwaway dialogue or was too quiet to hear. Two examples. When Pitt is loading up the bazooka he says "lets see what kind of tune i can get out of this trombone", nice little offbeat tough guy line, but i had to strain to hear, it and i think most of the animals chowing down on popcorn didnt hear it at all.
And then when he is getting the laptop examined by the bulldyke, and has that little exchange, I thought again, funny, but this time, where was the rest of it. Obviously a lot of this movie is on the floor. Any thoughts.
Make no mistake, this is one dumb, vapid movie, with performances to match. Comedically, it's hardly memorable. Action-wise, it's been there, done that. And I honestly wonder whether I'd be reacting to it on any kind of modest 'three star' effort terms not a year ago. But I'll be damned if I can't say I actually, grudgingly enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Smith in spite of myself, considering it's got *very* little up its content sleeve (not unlike The Bourne Identity in that dubious 'respect') besides an obvious zest for not taking itself seriously.

And see, that property alone deserves notice over all the exercises in 'ooh, SERIOUS!' yet utterly infuriating and tortuous disregard for quality I was none too richer or happier subjecting myself to this year like a cautiously optimistic chump (i.e. Hostage / Revenge of the Sith / Sin City / War of the Worlds). It fits into the genre that the Brad Pitt on coasting acting settings would do well to keep himself immersed in before he cranks out any more duds like Troy.

Still, you don't have anything close in this movie to a substantial element of satire to complement that abandon like in say, Death to Smoochy, a real volatile find in movie decency (IMHO, natch) that Smith pales next to hopelessly. Don't bother looking for one, viewed have nots: you ain't gonna find it. Unless you're awfully delusional, maybe. Yet the leads acquit themselves competently in 100% fluff, and on that level, their chemistry kept me watching. (Jolie in a watchable movie? Whoa, since when?)

Oh, and Liman's best film, a top-notch one at that, remains Swingers......which I doubt, a bit sadly, he'll ever top at this rate. I know Go has a fanbase, but consider me self-excluded.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate most of the so-called '97 KotW's films as much as the next dude......but what's this kickass cinematic prototype of domestic dispute meets extreme violence I keep reading about? True Lies is just crap, guys. Crap. You heard it here first.
