The undead v Nuclear Power

Back when the new Dawn was released, there was an interesting (if slightly geeky) thread on the Corner about some of the practicalities of a Zombie apocalypse, like how long the power would stay on, the internet up etc.

In an idle moment it occurred to me: wouldn't all the nuclear reactors melt down? I mean, without maintenance, power for all the coolant systems etc, wouldn't the whole world go whoomph anyway?

Just a thought...

Would "The Shield" get pre-empted? That's my biggest concern.

Nuclear power plants would probably last the longest without maintenance, with the exception of wind, but eventually they would all meltdown.

Now, given the relatively sparce distribution of nuclear plants in the U.S., most areas would be unaffected.

But nuclear power plants don't explode in mushroom clouds when the meltdown, do they? They just release horrendous levels of radiation.

A good question is whether said radiation releases would have any affect on zombie hordes, or if it would just kill the few remaining survivors within the proximity of the fallout.
