Top Five Horror Films

Thread Starter
This is probably the most generic and overdone kind of thread known to man, and I usually wouldn't post anything like this, but I have a reason. I'm going to try and write a Chewer Column of me watching horror films for the first time, since the only ones I've ever really seen are The Exorcist, Evil Dead 2 and the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That's right, I haven't seen one Romero film, haven't seen The Thing or the The Shining. I haven't even seen Alien all the way through. I'm not a fan too much of horror just in general, but I'm going to give it an honest go since it be silly to judge without seeing the best.

What I need from Chewers of all kinds would be basically your top five lists of horror films. Now, granted I kind of already know what the three I'll be writing about might be, and are pretty sure they won't change too much, but if a lot of people post and the majority posts something I didn't think of at all, I'll probably do that. Since, it would be better if I knew nothing about it then if I did.

So, go ahead and post if you wish.

I'll just come out swinging for the greatest horror film of all time.

Last night, my 5-yr-old asked me to tell him a scary story. As I started telling him about the little family that went to stay at the Overlook Hotel, I creeped myself out so much that I had to dramatically change the story. I don't think Kubrick ever imagined a climax that involved Moguira and Godzilla duking it out in the hedge maze.

My point is that I haven't seen The Shining in over five years. But when the lights are out and the world is quiet, I can see those creepy little girls as clear as day. What a masterpiece.

This is a list that represents the most popular/important themes in horror-
1) Night of The Living Dead ('68)- Fear of death
2) Bride of Frankenstein- Fear of God
3) Halloween- Fear of sexuality
4) The Exorcist- Fear of younger generations
5) Rosemary's Baby- Fear of society

There's also something to be said about horror movies that play on fears of the wilderness, but for the life of me I can't think of a worthy example.

6: Freaks - Fear of midgets.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0022913/

This isn't a joke pick either.

This always seems to change.

1. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON
2. THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN
3. THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE
4. EVIL DEAD II
5. DAWN OF THE DEAD

A pretty well-known list, but there's a reason why these movies are so well-loved.

5 That Haven't Been Mentioned

(for the record, though, if it hadn't been mentioned, The Thing would be #1)
1. Hellraiser
2. Nightmare On Elm Street
3. Poltergeist
4. Session 9
5. The Fly (1986)

Most of the ones I was thinking of have already been taken - The Shining, The Thing, Dawn of the Dead....
but if you want a great horror film check out Near Dark.
I love this flick. Great cast (Bill Paxton, Lance Hendrickson), great soundtrack by Tanderine Dream and it's kind of a western.

More not mentioned:

1. THE FOG
2. JAWS
3. A TALE OF TWO SISTERS
4. MARTIN
5. TENEBRE

Gotta second Freaks, that's one twisted, brilliant film.

Would also say my faves are:
The Shining, very unique in its feel and technique.

Dawn of the Dead for its gore and subtext.

Scanners, cos its a Cronenberg action-thriller and its got an ace ending.

And finally, The Others for being a well-written, old school yet modern Gothic horror tale.

There are hundreds of films you should see, like Suspiria and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but i'd go with the five above, in whichever order you see fit.

In no particular order:

The Thing
Halloween
Evil Dead 2
The Shining
The Invisible Man

A top five list is tough as there are quite a few different titles that shift in and out of my favorites list. A Top 15 would be more reflective of my tastes.

Hmm.......off the top of my head

1.) Halloween
2.) Evil Dead 2
3.) Army of Darkness
4.) Exorcist
5.) Ginger Snaps 2
1. The Shining
2. Alien
3. Halloween
4. Don't Look Now
5. The Thing

Jaws, Psycho and Silence of the Lambs could have all made this list; none of them quite fall neatly into the genre of "horror," but they still scare the bejesus out of me.

If you're interested in doing a "survey of the genre"-type thing, you may want to go with these:

Nosferatu: Along with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, it laid the foundations of the genre.
The Bride of Frankenstein: The epitome of Universal monster movies.
The FlY (Vincent Price version): It's a giant monster movie (sorta), a science gone awry movie, and a Vincent Price movie all in one. You just can't beat a trifecta like that.
Halloween: The movie that really got the slasher genre rolling.
The Shining: It's the epitome of the genre. YM, of course, MV.
