Company computer or personal computer

Ok.. I've been holding this in for over a day and since I can't really tell any real person.. I'll tell the whole freakin' internet.

Yesterday my co-worker was absent from work but she told me she wouldn't be in on Monday and that I could finish a project she was working on (therefore I would be using her computer).

I use her computer all the time when she is gone to pick up her slack. We are both graphic designers and my team hired her to do my old job. So I know what needs to be done... its routine.

So I'm working on a layout, when looking over her notes, there was a picture missing from the layout.

I go out into our warehouse and shoot the product. I return to the Macintosh and hook the camera up to the Mac. If you use a Mac, it instantly brings up a download option and will put your selected photos into a folder that is predetermined unless specified in advance.

Well I didnt pay much attention and just downloaded the photos into the first available folder it brought up. And after you download the photos the macintosh will automatically shoot up the Folder in question.. showing thumbnails of the images in the folders.

Well I was shocked to see thumbnails of images that are not exactly worksafe. I couldnt believe it. These were images of my coworker and another coworker... thumbnail images of course but large enough that I could see what they were. I was embarrassed. Also glad I didnt bring one up accidentally in photoshop so the whole marketing department could see.. that would have been the end of the world.

Anyway.. I realized I need to remove my product photos from this folder so not to "show" that I was perusing the contents. So I did and quickly moved my product shots into a new folder. But really why would she leave these on her computer??

WEll that's the story... No I didnt steal them or copy them but what should I do??

Should I tell her and causes her and me massive embarassment?

Should I tell the co-worker/boyfriend that she's got some photos on the corporate computer? Or should I just keep this quiet forever. Which sucks cuz its such an awesome story.

If you like her and want to keep working with her, I'd recommend staying quiet.

If she was smart like me, you keep that pron buried inside multiple file folders and then put a password on the cpu that no one knows. Every so often, delete it or whatever to make way for new pron to be downloaded.

trust me... I dont want her to go. If I lose her, I'll have to do ALL her work + my work.

Here's what you do:

a. Go back to her computer
b. Load said pictures onto a web space
c. post n00dz here
d. tell her about what you found "accidentally" but don't tell her you posted them for us

You have got to tell her.

The next person to discover it might not be as tactful as you, and she could lose her job.

Jesus, billy. Think with the head on your shoulders for once.

Ask her out. If she says no, tell her you have copies of the n00dz and you'd hate to see them end up on the boss' desk.
Tell her she's paying for dinner too.

It really depends on the type of friendship you have with her so I'm not sure what to say. This happened to me and I gently reminded someone that their drive space is sometimes randomly audited and that would be happening soon so make sure nothing personal is there. I had already seen the photos (which is a long story), but if talk of the pictures got out it would have been a much worse situation for him then your coworker.

I do want to add, as "the guy with all the keys" at my company that I could open a successful porn site with the amount of stuff coworkers keep on their PCs, networked drives and send via email. Stunning. I see some of these people walking down the hall and I have trouble looking them in the eyes. I truly never guess who is into what around here. One thing is for sure though, my company is full of people who like to electronically talk/email/display about the fact that they get their freak on regularly. The stories...

Frank's absolutely right -- you have to tell her. Do it tactfully, and promise not to tell anyone else. Something like: "Look, I accidentally noticed a couple of photos on your computer. I didn't look at them, but you might want to get rid of them for your own sake."

I didn't look at them for too long. I like your boobies. They made me feel funny downstairs. You might want to get rid of the photos for your own sake. I have copies though."
I revised your sound advice just a wee bit.

I'd like to know why there's such stigma attached to having naughty stuff on one's computer.
Why does someone need to be fired for this?

Never worked in the corporate world, eh Volta?
Well, it was just a general question. As long as the activities are taking place between consenting adults, I don't see what the problem is. I don't see why anyone should be ashamed of it (or be fired for it for that matter).

I admit that treating a work computer as a personal computer is a whole other question, though.

well here is the thing. I'm not going to say anything.

The reason being my work is a sea of PCs and only my marketing area has 2 Macintoshes. Our company isnt the most tech savvy. Our I.T. nerds won't even touch our Macs for fear of catching some disease so honestly my coworker and me are the only two people who would use them. Since her images were on her harddrive and not on the company shared drive.. I think she's safe.

I just wish I never saw them. 0_o totally uncomfortable.

Having nudie pics on your computer (especially ones with yourself and another employee) is considered "creating a hostile work environment". If the slightest possibilty exists that another employee sees that and is offended, they could sue the company (and win).

The company always gets sued. That's why they're so careful. Even if they win, they still spend a small fortune on legal expenses.

Never let the right hand know about the right hand. Or in this case, the right nut from the left.

I to work in an IT department and am amazed at some of the stuff people think they can get away with. Trust me you will always get caught. I have had to seach peoples hard drives in the past and been taught several ways to find what you have stored/looked at and it scared me just how easy it is to do.

The good news is i have also picked up tons of ways to cover your tracks .

A quick tip i will share, when doing the clearing cookies/temp files thing we all do remember to also clear you recently opened documents.

Back to your question - tell her, for her jobs sake.

Thanks for the explanation, Bob. Sounds good enough to me.

On another note, I have been wondering what exactly consistutes a "creating a hostile work environment". Couldn't that cover practically anything, provided it pisses you off enough?

Uploading pictures of you hammering your boss's wife into the bed should cover it.

Actually we are an external IT company so our office parties tend not to involve the client.

I hate having to do that part of the job though because i know if i find something that person is going to get the sack. So i kinda feel like im partaially responsable.

The NSA and GCHQ take it in turns. They aren't talking though, so Ken's safe.

Actually, since he's talking about a Mac, no need for 3rd party software.

Just go to finder>secure empty trash....
