Grades ONLY for Sith Please - Page 3

For what it's worth, here are the tallies up to now.

Average Score:

The Phantom Menace: 5.75 (33)
Attack of the Clones: 6.31 (33)
Revenge of the Sith: 7.76 (69)
Star Wars: 8.97 (32)
The Empire Strikes Back: 9.68 (32)
Return of the Jedi: 7.92 (32)

No real surprises there.

The number in parentheses is the number of scores that film received. I didn't double check to make sure people didn't post twice, and if someone said "first viewing, second viewing, fifth viewing etc..." I just kept the last score. I didn't include the letter grade scores since there's no scale for those and since the initial question asked for numbers. Anyway, enjoy.

Well I finally saw Episode 3 and my personal grade would be... an 8. Not a earth-shattering movie in my cinematic history but a good time all around. I don't see myself rating it higher after repeat viewings, but it should hold up a little better than the prior prequels.

Kevin Costner alone should bring that score to at least a C+.

I give Sith an "8". Let's see if the impression stays after I see the film again later this week.

You said "Grades ONLY for Sith Please," but I will do as much in the way of disregarding that as most everyone else has done.

I thought. I thought long, and I thought hard. The result:

Old Testament
A New Hope: 7.7
The Empire Strikes back: 8.0
Return of the Jedi: 8.3

New Testament
The Phantom Menace: 9.9
Attack of the Clones: 0.2
Revenge of the Sith: 0.5

Don't take my scores seriously. I can't grade these films objectively; I'm too close to them. The best moment of the prequels was my first viewing of the opening crawl of The Phantom Menace. If Attack of the Clones were only the Obi-Wan detective subplot, it would be a pretty enjoyable something.

My two favorite moments from my seven-hours-and-five-minutes Revenge of the Sith opening day experience:

1) Some man sicced his Yoda-mask-wearing child on two illuminated plastic saber duellists. People cheered. It was a special moment: nice and good.
2) When people saw "Walt Disney Pictures Presents," there was a collective boo. When the booers realized that Walt Disney Pictures was presenting The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, those boos changed to cheers. The fickleness of the American movie going public warms my heart.

OK, on rewatching Sith, my final scores for the entire saga, with explanations:

Star Wars: 10. A perfect film, succeeds completely at what it sets out to do. Up there with King Kong, Adventures of Robin Hood, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I think it's just a whee bit better than all of those, both in action spectacle and that elusive qualitiy known as "heart."

Empire: 10. Again, a perfect film at what it sets out to do, and I think a unique film at the time of it's release. I can think of no previous sequel that built on it's predecessor in the same way, expanding the story and making things darker and more complex.

Jedi: Deserves a 7, but I give it an 8 due to, um, sentimental investment in the series up to this point. Could be greatly improved, but a satisfying end to the saga.

Phantom Menace: 4. There's just nothing I like about this movie, and the story does not interest me at all. I think I see what Lucas was going for, but it never gets that "magical" feeling of a great kid's adventure, and I just find all the characters besides Anakin to be utterly boring.

Clones: 7. I really think this is the best of the prequels, and over all, a good film. Well-structured, lots of plot, you get to see some of the things you were hoping for in the prequels (the Jedi in battle, Yoda fighting), and I even like some of the Anakin-Padme dialogue that most fans rag on. Despite all this, it fails to truly connect, and feels cold and heartless.

Sith: 6. Entertaining, but not good. There's good things in there, but the crucial moments are all handled terribly. It's worth noting that Clones probably gets off easy by not having any crucial moments.

I'm not sure what I REALLY think of SITH. I mean, I enjoyed it in theaters, and I have the DVD (which I'm patiently waiting to watch for the first time on an HDTV which I should be getting very, very soon), but time will tell how well it holds up.

3/10

I thought large tracts of it were boring. I thought the treatment of Padme's character was offensive and lame. I thought the rank hypocrisy of the final section of the film was disgusting and I've never left a theatre feeling so irritated and appalled. I don't know if what I felt was intentional or not on the part of the director's choices but I do know that I intend never to watch that horrendous piece of detritus again.

Attack of the Clones
6.5
Revenge of the Sith
7.5
A New Hope
(for what it did to/for cinema)10
(for what it really is, over time, in it's subgenre)8
the Empire Strikes Back
9
Return of the Jedi
7

*edit- My answers are a bit biased because I love special effects. I own all of these on DVD and rewatch them a lot, despite their flaws. If I hated effects pictures I'd knock a point off of each score even though "A New Hope" and "Empire" are still classics.

JEDI will always be the weakest SW flick to me. Most of the Jabba's Palace portion of the film, Yoda's death scene and the Luke/Vader/Emperor sequences are really the only parts that I watch. There's a lifeless air running through the film, and while it ties up the saga in timely fashion, the sacrifice is having to tolerate a fair share of deadweight, perfunctory production.

For tying up loose ends in two separate generations of films, striving for operatic boldness, and just being an overall enjoyable experience, SITH has got JEDI beat by a long shot.
