I may have over-rated it a bit. But I thought what was wrong with the movie were small fixes (and the deletion of a certain one word sentence that should have been laughed out of the editing room) or nuances that could have been brought out by a better director and writer. On the whole I thought it was a successful film, as opposed to the first two which were broken beyond repair.

I may be over-enthusiastic, but I don't think to the point of hysteria.

8.

If The Duel were better I would've given it a 9.

I don't mind Ep.1. I don't think it's great, but I think it's a little better than a 6.5. 7, C grade, a little less than 3 stars.

Clones and Sith, one star movies.

I just don't see how it rates above Clones, let alone by such a wide margin. They're both pretty poor, but at least Clones has a lot more action eye candy to keep you distracted. The only thing Menace has going for it is the Darth Maul duel (which, admittedly, is probably the best part of the entire PT).

Liked it alot. Empire still rules.

"Why is it "mass hysteria" if others enjoy it more?"

Because quite frankly all of the Star Wars Geeks (please don't kill me...I don't really mean to insult) are in a frenzy over this movie. Hey I don't get the Star Wars craze but maybe I am not supposed to... I don't know. I mean if a person dresses up like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker just to go see a movie...that is is hysteria. Or at least it is fucking hysterically funny.

Really liking all the comparisons and grades without the long winded debates...keep 'em coming.

I'm calling it mass hysteria because the critics seem to be giving it a pass. I didn't say I didn't enjoy it and I'm glad you liked it. But, if this wasn't a Star Wars film, no one would let the horrible acting slide or the weaker moments pass. Only because of it's pedigree does it get these stellar reviews. I don't know if you have been reading them but on the IMDB the rating is 8.4! It is already on the top 250 of all time list. Give me a break. The movie didn't start for me until the Order 66. If it would have just started there, I'd have no complaints. Hayden Christiansen cannot act at all. Everything he said sounds flat and the dialogue that they have to say is awful. Where the hell is Lawrence Kasdan? He isn't do anything, let him take a pass at the script. A weak film is a weak film. I was extremely disappointed.

Upon second viewing, EP3 completely fell apart for me. I mean, disasterously so. So I have to downgrade my original rating (6.5). It's also caused me to rethink some of the relative ratings for the other films.

EP1 = 3.5
EP2 = 3.0
EP3 = 3.0
EP4 = 9.5
EP5 = 10.0
EP6 = 7.5

"But see, that's quite a generalization there. You make it sound as if those that like the movie all dress up like DV or Luke. And that "normal" people, who can "think clearly" would see that the movie and the entire PT is crap. I would agree, the people that go to showings with plastic lightsabers are nerds, and probably hysterical in some fashion. In any case, I would submit that the vast majority of fans (especially at the 12:01 show I attended) are not people who play SW dress up and hold lightsaber duels in theaters, and that a significant portion of them might have actually enjoyed the movie for what it is."

I in no way meant to imply that the "normal" person would think the PT is crap, or may not have enjoyed the films for what they are. Most people who are Star Wars "Geeks" are normal folk. And the average moviegoer who will see this film are "normal" folk. Those who dress up are freaks. All I meant was that when you have a huge mix of fanatical fans in costume and in plain clothes, fans of the films in general, and the merely curious flocking to the thaters to what will likely be in the range of $150 million dollars in tickets sold in a matter of a few days that is "Hysteria" in a pop culture sense. Not to mention Stars Wars is all over countless magazine covers, cereal boxes etc.....

The Phantom Menace, while being slow, never fucks with canon too much outside of the Midichlorians, and delivers when it needs to. It's worse crime is it's uselessness in terms of the overall story, but that is a modest crime. It also has a stately tone, a sense of yearning, and feels more connected to the OT than the later films, which just never worked for me from frame one. I walked out of the first one, first time and though, "Hey, that's not so bad," hence a slightly higher than 2 1/2 star rating.

Now are we going to get a lecture on how you can factually prove that ROTS was that bad?

I think Portman could give you a blow job and you would bitch that she didn't make you dinner at the same time.
post #71 of 131
I really liked the flick, will prolly catch it a few more times in the theater. I can understand some cats not liking it, that's their opinion. The one thing I think is fucking retarded is how some folks think that their OPINION = FACT. There is no definitive proof as to whether something is good or not. Hell, one of my all-time favorite movies is the 1987 kids flick "The Monster Squad"--something that is just really fucking stupid compared to most movies. How some folks like to argue that their opinion is fact is laughable and quite pathetic.

I took off my rose-colored glasses this time. One thing that often gets conveniently ignored in these threads is that as far as I can tell, no one...NO ONE...posting about STAR WARS here actually wants these films to be bad. We're all rooting for them to be as great as they can possibly be. So, despite my disgust with EPs 1 and 2, I went into EP3 really wanting to like it. The second time, I just watched it as a film, and found myself dismayed by the choices Lucas made throughout (many of which are already being discussed in other non-"grade only" threads). And in many ways, EP3 is even more painful than EPs 1 and 2 because this one COULD have been truly great.

A New Hope 8.5
The Empire Strikes Back 9.3
Return of the Jedi 7.2

The Phantom Menace 7.3
Attack of the Clones 8.0
Revenge of the Sith 9.0
post #80 of 131
I don't get into decimal points and shit. That path leads to insanity.

Star Wars: 10
Empire: 10
Jedi: 8

Phantom: 4
Clones: 6
Sith: 8, for now.

Jedi probably gets a better score than it deserves, just from being part of a series I love. Similarly, I had Clones at 7 until very recently, but I finally had to give up on it. I could see Sith dropping to a 7, rising to a 9, or staying the same, depending on how the repeat viewings go. Ask me in a year.
post #81 of 131
Phantom Menace: 6.0 - Can Watch it again, but not very often. Darth Maul was cool.

Attack of the Clones: 7.5 - Pretty Good Movie, Wooden acting and dialogue, but a good story and action.

Revenge of the Sith: 9.0 - Best of the new trilogy by alot. Some hokey dialogue. But I loved the irony in the story, such a twist ending (Anakin more or less killing Padme is this series, I am your father). Would be higher if there was better music in the Jedi liquidation scene Plan 66, and if Vader didnt bellow out NOOOOOOOOOOO lkike a whiney bitch when he figured out Padme died. George should have had him go beserk instead.

A New Hope: 9.9 - Ive seen it 100+ times and the trench run still excites me me.

Empire Strikes Back: 10 - My favorite of all time. What can I say that Clerks didnt say already. Its the best movie of the series, hands down.

Jedi: 9.0 - Precentage points ahead of Sith just becuase I saw this when I was 7 so that puts it just a little higher. The space battle was better in Jedi. But the final battle was better in Sith.

It was nice to see 2 fully trained and healthy Jedi go toe to toe. It was pretty much the first time there was an equal (age and health) fight in the series. It was the best fight in the whole series.

That's exactly right. It might be telling the story no one wants to hear, but it tells it right, for the most part.

I would argue that things hold together into about halfway through Episode II, though. There are a lot of parts early on that feel like Star Wars, until it turns into about three different video games in succession.

I've only seen ROTS once, but I'm almost afraid to see it again, because I feel like it's going to lose at least a couple points.
post #83 of 131
b+, maybe changes on second viewing but we'll see.
TPM: c+
AOTC:B-, although TPM had Darth Maul which by itself should warrent a higher grade.
post #84 of 131
Lucas was interviewed for a paper here in LA, it may have even been the LA times but basically, he confirmed the parallels between ROTS and the Bush regime. However, he also mentioned that it parallels many situations in history. He did say the outline of the film was written before Bush did what he did but he definitely added other things to parallel or 'reflect' what Bush's regime has been up to. Interesting to say the least
post #85 of 131
Upon Second Viewing I would say that it is still B+, maybe, just maybe A-, but more in the B range. The last hour or so is just plain great.
post #86 of 131
I've seen it 3 times now.....I saw it the first time obviously because I was stoked to see the damn shit. I went the second time to make sure it was as good as I first thought it was.....interestingly enough, I dropped a couple points the second time.

then today I saw it again just to be ABSOLUTLEY sure what I thought out it .....and I loved it even MORE the 3rd time around. I love this damn movie!

When he did that, it reminded me of Luke's "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" when Vader tells him that he is his father. I didn't have a big problem with it.

I'm going to give it a 8.7 . I liked it a lot. For one thing it was DARK. you think empire was dark? man sith schools it in that category. I really like how Lucas did order 66. I loved that scene. It was perfect. Vaders first breath? Who wouldn't like that. I am never watching menace or clones again. Those two were retched. Sith was a great film.
