When I say disappointed, the key word to understand is RELATIVISM. ROTS is a good movie, and if I were a critic I would have to recommend it because there are just too many moments of brilliance to not recommend it.
But I LOVED episodes 1 and 2. AOTC is my second favorite SW movie behind only TESB. Everything leading up to Episode 3 pointed towards it being my favorite of the Saga. I loved all the Spoilers. The critics, who hated episodes 1 and 2 loved episode 3. The soundtrack was excellent.
And here is a further dillemna for me: The greatest SW movie WAS captured on film for episode 3.........but it got botched up in the editing room. The acting, special effects, and story are terrific. Which makes it all the more tragic that the editing sucked. Part of the blame has to go to Roger Barton, considering that the editing wasnt this bad in episodes 1 and 2. He also worked on some of the crap films that Michael Bay directed, which is probably why I was wondering if Goerge Lucas went to the Michael Bay school of directing after he finished episode 2. Episode 1 was edited perfectly. Episode 2 had a few editing problems, but not enough to ruin the movie for me. I have a threory that Roger Barton got an superiority complex after he won the Oscar for Titanic. Since then his editing has been crap. Either that or he started working with crap directors.
Scenes feel as though they were shortened or cut. They just dont feel fleshed out. Lucas doenst focus enough on certain characters. For instance, when Palpatine tells Anakin "Know the power of the Darkside, and you will save Padme from certain death." He then makes the perfect smile. That was perfect!!..........but then Lucas only focuses on that smile for maybe a millesecond. Lucas does this a lot during the film. I just wanted to grab him, shake his shoulders and say "CAN YOU PLEASE FOCUS ON ONE CHARACTER FOR MORE THAN A FREAKING MILLESECOND????????? MY GOD!!!"
70% of episode 3 is 10 times better than any of the other SW movies. But 30% is ten times worse. Intersecting the Seperatist Slaughter scene and the Special Congressional Session scene was a big mistake. It took the tension out of two great scenes. The Seperatist Slaughter scene was done more elaboritely in the script. You kind of get the feeling that Lucas did this just to shorten the movie. BIg mistake.
