Therapy Thread- PT Gushers Disappointed in ROTS

When I say disappointed, the key word to understand is RELATIVISM. ROTS is a good movie, and if I were a critic I would have to recommend it because there are just too many moments of brilliance to not recommend it.

But I LOVED episodes 1 and 2. AOTC is my second favorite SW movie behind only TESB. Everything leading up to Episode 3 pointed towards it being my favorite of the Saga. I loved all the Spoilers. The critics, who hated episodes 1 and 2 loved episode 3. The soundtrack was excellent.

And here is a further dillemna for me: The greatest SW movie WAS captured on film for episode 3.........but it got botched up in the editing room. The acting, special effects, and story are terrific. Which makes it all the more tragic that the editing sucked. Part of the blame has to go to Roger Barton, considering that the editing wasnt this bad in episodes 1 and 2. He also worked on some of the crap films that Michael Bay directed, which is probably why I was wondering if Goerge Lucas went to the Michael Bay school of directing after he finished episode 2. Episode 1 was edited perfectly. Episode 2 had a few editing problems, but not enough to ruin the movie for me. I have a threory that Roger Barton got an superiority complex after he won the Oscar for Titanic. Since then his editing has been crap. Either that or he started working with crap directors.

Scenes feel as though they were shortened or cut. They just dont feel fleshed out. Lucas doenst focus enough on certain characters. For instance, when Palpatine tells Anakin "Know the power of the Darkside, and you will save Padme from certain death." He then makes the perfect smile. That was perfect!!..........but then Lucas only focuses on that smile for maybe a millesecond. Lucas does this a lot during the film. I just wanted to grab him, shake his shoulders and say "CAN YOU PLEASE FOCUS ON ONE CHARACTER FOR MORE THAN A FREAKING MILLESECOND????????? MY GOD!!!"

70% of episode 3 is 10 times better than any of the other SW movies. But 30% is ten times worse. Intersecting the Seperatist Slaughter scene and the Special Congressional Session scene was a big mistake. It took the tension out of two great scenes. The Seperatist Slaughter scene was done more elaboritely in the script. You kind of get the feeling that Lucas did this just to shorten the movie. BIg mistake.

Here is what I loved:

-The opening shot. Sorry ANH purists, THIS is the best opening shot of the saga.
-The space battle was great.
-The move that Anakan puts on Dooku to cut his hands off
-The look on Anakin's face after Palpatine tells Anakin to kill Dooku.
-The way Palpatine tells Anakin to kill him.
-The love scenes between Anakin and Padme. They are two adults now, not the two adolescents they were in AOTC. I cant believe the critics think this is the weak point of the film. Yes, the dialouge is hokey and corny, but the actors say it with such conviction and sincerity. That is what makes it work.
-The nightmare sequences. This was a risk for Lucas considering that this is unusual for SW, but they worked extremely well.
-The general plot of both the Council and Palpatine using Anakin against each other.
-It is heavily implied that Palpatine knows that the Council will use Anakin to spy on him. Awesome.
-The opera scene. Perfect exchange between Ananakin and Palpatine. THere should have been more scenes like this. They werent afraid to take thier time and flesh the scene out. You can tell that very little of this scene was cut if any at all.
-The Boga yell. That made the Utapau sequences bearable.
-The fight between Kenobi and Grievous. Just wish this had not been broken in two pieces by the chase.
-Palpatine during his confession to Anakin about him being the Sith lord. He is excellent in this scene.
-The way Mace says. "My looaard". during the fight against Palpatine.
-The whole sequence where Anakin has to choose between killing Palpatine and killing Mace. Mace getting blown out the window was awesome.
-The emporer's theme during the scene where Anakin pledges his allegiance to Palpatine. The theme has an ever so slight variation to it in this one, and I love it.
-The sequence on Mustafer where Padme talks to Anakin and the dialouge in general. PERFECT.
-Obiwan and Anakin talking right before THE DUEL. PERFECT.
-The wide shot of the Senate Podium going up into the Senate while Yoda and Sidious are dueling. More wide epic shots like this were needed in these two duels, espeacially the Obiwan v. Anakin duel.
-The point at which the collection plant starts falling into the lava, and Anakin and Obiwan start climbing up on it. This is where THE DUEL starts to become interesting.
-After Anakin gets his legs cutoff and the acting of Obiwan and Anakin. It was great.
-The birth of Darth Vader being intersected with the birth of his children. Equating getting trapped in a black shell that is the shadow of your former self with having kids may seem sadistic to some, but it is also mythologically brilliant.
-James Earl Jones still sounding like his OT self was great.
-The classic mythological theme of causing the future by trying to prevent it.

WHat I hated:

-Count Dooku jumping off the platform by flipping. What was the point of that?
-The battledroids during the Dooku Duel. Batlle droids have no place during lightsaber duels.
-Some of Dooku's lines being cut. Lee's screen time is as short as it is.
-The battle droids saying stupid crap to Grievous like "Your welcome." They should just do thier jobs.
- R2 ramming against the wall. No place for humor in this film.
-All the Kashyyk sequences should have been limited to being a part of the Jedi Purge sequence. If you arent going to show many sequences of a particular world, dont show any at all unless extremely necessary. To do so only serves the purpose of making the viewer feel disjointed.
-At the expense of deleting most of the Kyshaak seequences, the Utapua sequence should have been expanded upon. There should have also been some sort of story element. This whould have made the story of the film more tighter and less disjointed.
-Palpatine should have cut the head of one of the Jedi off. They should have shown his head head on Palpatine's desk.
-Bad editing in the Mace -Palpatine duel.
- Palpatine is a bit to over the top when he dons the OT emporer's flesh.
-Palpatine doing a side flip while jumping towards the Jedi in the office. What was the point of that?
-All the scenes in between the The Sith Knighting scene and the end of THE DUEL just were not connected in the right way. The Senate scene should not have been intercutt with the Seperatist slaughter scene.
-THE DUEL should have been 12 minutes like they said it would be. Only the first 1/3 should have been interecut with the Yoda Sidous duel. The remaining 8 minutes of the Dule should not have been intercut.
-There were not enough wide shots of the two final duels. Too many close shots.
-Padme's funeral and the scene of Leia on Alderaann should have been deleted, along with the scene of Vader on the Star Destroyer. This is not ROTK.
- Anakin should have cut Viceroy Gunray to pieces. He then should have tossed his head on the desk and said, "Now its your head on a desk."

No. Episode 3 should have been more violent. Episode 1 was rightly more of a kids movie, so episode 3 should have been the anti-thesis of episode 1 by being somewhat of a horror flick. The title should have been THE SITH GALAXY MASSACRE.

I agree. Ben should have eaten the twins as they came out of Padme - then told Yoda that he was keeping them in his tummy for safe keeping....

That is until the time was right... Then he could have killed Yoda and bathed in his midichorian blood...

And of course this is after cutting Yoda's head off and scooping out the skull matter and then putting a candle inside it and placing the skull outside his Tattoonie adobe when halloween came around...

That is the most I've ever laughed out loud after reading something on the internet. Nice work.

Hell, I thought the editing was far superior to the other prequels.

ADDED:

And reading your list of what you hated... well, we won't get along. Cut Padmé's funeral and Vader taking his place at the Emperor's side? No. And the Utapau plot is long enough as is.

I thought ROTS was a huge improvement over the last 2 films......

....but I was still greatly disappointed.

That's hilarious and horrifying at the same time.

Yet another "why I was disappointed with the prequels" thread.
