Tied with Romero's MARTIN for best vampire flick ever. Amazing flick, great performances and visuals and really well-written.

I've been thinking of renting this but something has been stopping me. I want to see it but something is telling me not to even bother with it.

Well tell that voice to shut the fuck up. Rent it, or better yet buy it, it's worth it. It used to be my least favorite vampire flick but honestly now it's number one. It works because it's sort of offbeat and more like a western. The standard vampire rules don't apply. No crosses, stakes, holy water, only the sun works and the word vampire is never mentioned(not something I even realized but that handy lil booklet that came with the DVD is informative). I say give it a rent. It's got gore, a gunfight, and it's pieced together by some great plot and dialogue from Eric Red.

The Bar Scene alone is worth a rental if not a blind-buy.

If you're still hesitant about renting it, maybe this will encourage you to do so.

Bill Paxton Vs. A TRUCK.

One of my all-time favorite vampire films, and possibly even favorite horror films in general. It doesn't have any of the mock-epic/romantic pretension that vampire stories are so famous for. It has a small independent film sort of vibe to it, and almost nothing in the way of special effects; it's all story and character, which is what I love about it. Plus it's got three (count 'em, three!) cast members in common with Aliens. All this and Tim Thomerson too. How can you go wrong?

I had already heard about the bar scene from that "100 Scariest Moments" special on Bravo. I'll probably check this out just for the fact that it's from the guy who wrote "The Hitcher", which is one of my top three favorite horror films ever.

And hell, a movie that features both Bill Paxton Vs. A Truck AND Tim Thomerson can't be all bad. Maybe I'll rent it this weekend.

I guess I will take some heat for this but I think Near Dark is a terrible movie. That little fat kid is annoying as hell, so are the "cross-culture" main lead boy/girl couple. I'm a big Bill Paxton fan but this is no Dark Backward. Just because they ignore some vampire convention and drop a couple cutesy references to the fact that they might be older than their transient 80s fashion bum style implies... it's still deadly dull. and the ending is patently redonkulous. just my opinion as one who missed it back in the day and checked into it on the recent SE DVD on account of all the "cult classic" hype

While it may not be the 'ultimate' vampire film, I agree with the observation that since there are 10,000 shitty vampire films that have defecated on us, this stands above. Paxton, Henricksen, and Goldstein are awesome, Pasdar does a good job, and Bigelow can direct, no doubt.

from all the good reviews that this movie is getting, I think I will go rent it soon.

Cheap enough that I learned a lesson on Blind Buying movies. I did a lot of blind buying and wasted so much money on dumb ass movies that I hate and will never own again. For me renting is safe way to see if you like the movie and if you see it over and over then that's when you buy the movie.

Oh my God, I just realised I do not have this film in my collection !! WTF???

I had a copy taped from Sky movies years ago but since I've been in the States I have just never gotten around to buying it. This must be remedied ASAP !

I deserve a good slap for my oversight.

I love this flick but hate the whole "transfusion" scene...Otherwise, Henrikson is the man!

Problem sorted. Near Dark is now back in the collection. Looks like the slap worked perfectly.
