Bad Girls 9: Bust Out (1997)

The Shawshank Redemption. It's perfect. Nothing else to be said.

I agree with Shawshank Redemption. A big SK fan, I read the short story long before the film came out. They did manage to capture much of the feeling of the book with the film, something rare for Hollywood [and even MORE so for Stephen King works!]. Much less graphic than the novella, the film still conveyed a sense of dread for the prisoners, while making us care for them individually. Stellar performances all 'round.

I also really enjoy Papillion. Haven't seen it in a while, so I can't quite recall specifics- but Steve McQ's neverending 'quest' for freedom is a great watch.

Two off the top of my head are 99 Women and Riki-Oh: Story of Ricky

ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ. Classic Eastwood.

I prefer THE GREEN MILE to SHAWSHANK. Haven't watched either in a while, but that was my last opinion on the two.

PAPILLION is great.

Escape From New York.

Escape from Alcatraz- because nothing beats Clint collecting up the fingers of Roberts Blossom with righteous anger.

A Sense of Freedom- the true story of Jimmy Boyle, from the director of The Long Good Friday. just an awesome movie.

Scum (theatrical version)- merciless borstal shocker from master British filmmaker Alan Clarke. don't drop the flowerpot!

Stir Crazy- the best of the Pryor/Wilder team ups. so much great stuff, but especially love the scene near the start where you can just make out that big scary jailbird corpsing uncontrollably at Pryor's family of little people story

Prison on Fire- intense Ringo Lam classic. and as Chow Yun Fat collaborations go, approximately a gajillion times better than Full Contact

also:

Papillon

The Great Escape

McVicar

Half Past Dead and Today you Die (probably)

Cool Hand Luke and Shawshank Redemption

oh...a movie that I don't see on the prisonflicks website, but it surely qualifies:

No Escape

great B movie action, prison island, ray liotta, matt dillions brother, black ghostbuster, lance henriksen...its got it all!

How about that Rutger Hauer one with the prisoners in exploding head collars. That was awesome.

Ilsa - Shewolf of the SS.

Because of Ilsa´s massive mammaries.

That it took more than one post for CHL to get a nod is sad.

I like both of these and would say CHL is my fave.

Guilty Pleasures:
Tango and Cash
The Rock

Brute Force...still the definitive prison movie. All the others owe something to it.
Cool Hand LUke is another one of my favorites.
For some reason I could never get into "Shankshaw Redemption" that much.

Shawshank has always felt forced to me.

Everytime I see Tim Robbins I know I'm supposed to feel sympathetic or in awe. But I never do. I just hope for a riot.

And I am a little surprised that "Midnight Express" has not gotten a mention here.
"Papillion" is another great prison movie. It's fiction (the book it is based on has been proven to have been pretty much cut out of whole cloth as far as the hero's adventures being true is concerened) but it compeliing film making.

An Innocent Man (Tom Selleck)
Thought someone would have mentioned this film by now.

Brubaker. Robert Redford's great, but so's the whole cast, really, as well as the build-up to what the story's really about. Since I didn't know about the events that the film's based on, I was surprised when it ended up going there. Just really great.

I'm gonna second AN INNOCENT MAN for the best of the bunch, Selleck's finest film IMHO. For a futuristic prison flick I'll take FORTRESS. I know it's only a small part of the film but the prison scenes in AMERICAN HISTORY X are, um, sort of hard to forget. If you want to see a prison flick with Willem Dafoe, Tom Arnold, and Mickey Rourke in drag there's always ANIMAL FACTORY, not great but probably worth something for its various oddities.

The Big Bird Cage and Caged Heat.
