I took my lad out for a long walk in his buggy this afternoon (part of the rigorous “weight-loss” routine which isn't working much) and I happened across a dead cat on the pavement. I’m no pet detective but it seemed pretty obvious it had been hit by a car.

Of course, there’s nothing unusual about this. Indeed with the number of new houses sprouting up where I live, dead moggies at the side of the road are becoming increasingly common.

What did make this unusual was the bouquet of flowers that had been set beside it by the driver or some random passer by (I doubt them being placed by the owner since I’m pretty sure the cat would not have been left behind). Even more odd they’d been bought from a shop at least two miles distant (the label was still attached).

Now I suppose the possibility exists the person who left the flowers was carrying them at the time, but I think this is unlikely. So it seems the logical explanation of events is someone went four miles out of their way, in a car or on foot, to ease his/her conscience.

I’m a bit of a softie really. I’ll cry at anything - especially involving animals. Thinking about what must have been going through that person’s mind at the time, I welled up like a baby.

I'm exactly the same Geoff, breaks my heart to see animals suffer.

I remember years ago we found a dead cat outside the factory I worked at in Tewkesbury, England one morning. We couldn't just leave it outside the front door so it got wrapped up and moved. About 2 hours later a woman turned up with her 2 kids, about 4 & 5 years old, asking if we had seen her cat. I was just glad I wasn't the one who told her the bad news. It was bad enough seeing her kids so upset.

Hell, I hate seeing dead wildlife here. Squirrels & roads do not mix. I did see a raccoon that got hit the other day, sad 'cos you don't see too many of them. Oh yeah, skunks too....shit, you can smell a dead one for miles !

I killed a baby squirrel once. Ran smooth over it's head and heard a nice little crunch. It was rather unexpected as the little guy ran out and I braked hoping to miss, but it was too late.

I hate telling this story, but it fits in here. It's one that still makes me feel absolutely terrible.

A few years ago I lived in a neighborhood that had several cats, most of them feral. One was used to humans though, and very affectionate. I grew up with cats, so I was happy to pet the cute fella every time I was going to work (I walked to a train station). One day I was walking out of the neighborhood to the station when I saw the cat. I called for it and it began to walk toward me. Just then a car came down the road quite fast and ran the cat over. The car just kept going, and I was standing there in shock. The only reason the cat got in the way of the car was because I had been calling it to pet it.

The cat didn't die, at least not instantly. In fact, it jumped up and ran off. However, it had been actually run over (I unfortunately could see the whole thing), so I'd imagine it wasn't long for this world. If nothing else, I'm sure it suffered from being in shock. I had just about the worst day at work I ever have had in my life. Couldn't concentrate, felt amazingly guilty. Still do, in fact.

I read an interesting piece a couple of years ago that looked at some research carried out in a small American town whose name escapes me.

Apparently children who are cruel to animals (meeting the law’s definitions of animal cruelty) are eight times more likely to commit acts of violence against humans once they reach adulthood.

I have no idea what the correlation (if any) is between cruelty to animals and sociopathic behavior in general, but if you do any research on serial killers at all it is certainly a common theme (though not a universal one). In fact, many serial killers have similar childhood experiences ranging from abuse to confusion about gender identity to suffering some sort of trauma (often physical, such as a blow to the head).
