What are you listening to right now? - Page 4

Depending on what time of the year they were recorded, he would have been about 21 for the first and 23 for the second. To find out what that lazy bastard was up to when he was 22, check out The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.

I'm five years older than he was when he released the last of those three. *sigh*

On topic, though: currently obsessed with The Reminder (Feist) and DaveB's annual summer mix (This year's title: 1,000 Years of Popular Summer Mixes).

He was around 22. I try not to throw the genius word around too much, but if there are any modern day musical geniuses, Dylan is definitely it. And I think he still has it, even in live performances, contrary to what was implied in the most recent piece on I'm Not There.

In his early twenties, I think.

You should watch No Direction Home, it tells you pretty much everything you could want to know about his early life. Really interesting and funny stuff, and there are a few clips of him that are just classic.

Care to share what songs are featured?

As for myself, I've mostly been listening to Tim Armstrong's "A Poet's Life" and The Bouncing Souls' "The Good, the Bad and the Argyle".

I can check the track listing in iTunes when I get home. I think it's about 24 tracks long. The special feature this year was a healthy dose of British Invasion stuff.

Is there any Richard Thompson on it?

No, Manowar is pretty gay.

I've been listening to the Halo of Locust cover of Dixie Whiskey by EyeHateGod. Not that bad actually.

Paul McCartney - "Ram" - oh how I love this album. McCartney gets slammed a lot, compared to Lennon, people say he's soft. Whatever. His song composition is consistently much more complex and lush.

Speaking of Macca, there's an article about him in the New Yorker which I haven't had a chance to finish. It's kind of sad. He's turning 65 or 64 soon. I didn't even realize that he and his wife split.

Well, I'm currently watching the DVD of O.A.R. Live From Madison Square Garden. I pre-ordered the 2 CD set, and the 2 DVD set, and the package arrived in the mail yesterday. If you like O.A.R......you gotta check out either the CD or the DVD...they're amazing.

Also, I got Live Trax 9...the newest in the Live Trax series from Dave Matthews Band. It's a 4 CD set of their two night stand at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on March 23rd and 24th, 2007. Quite awesome. So, I've been listening to those a ton.

There's this live video of 'Panty Shot' by MSI on Youtube that I have been obsessing over for several days and I'm at work and I'm bored, so here it is! Loud, offensive goodness for everyone! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9pHurZR5RY

White Rabbits - "Fort Nightly"

Fucking great little band with a kind of piano driven post-punk sound.

Sunset Rubdown - "Shut Up I'm Dreaming"

Spencer Krug from Wolf Parade's side project. Better than Swan Lake and a definite must for fans of Parade.

This mixtape I made a while back with Gravediggaz, Saturday Looks Good to Me, The Proclaimers, Curtis Mayfield and Radiohead has been getting non-stop rotation in my car. Mostly because I keep forgetting to replace it.

First track - "Sumer is Icumen In," thus the silly title of the mix. I try to make my annual Summer CD a good mix of shamelessly catchy, interesting, and Summer-specific.

"Leaving to Zion" and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" by the reggae group Black Uhuru. Overall, nice sounds and vocals and inventive engineering for late 70's/early 80's reggae

"Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters. I've been into Blues, but I have never heard such a nice and funky "call and response". You can hear this in goodfellas when Liotta snorts coke with his mistress at the end when he is being trailed.

"Demon Days" by Gorillaz. Overall great stuff, as i like how they mash up sounds and turn it into good music.

Against my own will, I am listening to what I thought was T.I., but this song they keep saying something about DipSet. Whatever it is, it's really stupid, vapid hip-hop, and there's a couple moms and like 8 little dudes running around making all kinds of noise. It's kind of annoying, but also kind of nice.

Pixies At The BBC is ridiculously great. The one thing I didn't absolutely love about their records is Gil Norton's weird production. That's not a problem here. The production is sparse but since everything is way less compressed, its a nice 'live' sound.
