That was my reaction, too. So much for those theories about cultural immersion.

Most of us non-gamers have heard that there's a popular series of videogames called "Halo." That's about as far as it goes (actually, probably not even that far, in most cases), at least in my experience.

Do people think Halo has a greater global recognition factor than Tomb Raider? Or appeal to a female audience (who, depending on who you talk to, make up 50-60% of the current ticket buying audience)? Because the answer to both is NO.

There need to be scholarships made available for the amount of schooling that's going on in this thread.
My theory:

Some tweve year old is going to be totally amused to review the film as such: "Halo? Gaylo."
Also, some columnist will make a joke about how J.Lo should be in Halo.

Advance Negative Review : "Halo goes down in flames faster than Waco!"

Somebody get Larry Niven on the phone. We need to rush Ringworld into production to get some Abyss/Leviathan/Deep Star Six - style rivalry going.

I never got to see the photo ogf Master Chief delivering the scripts.

I must have missed these gems from the press release:

Quote:
...one of the most anticipated scripts ever written
Aah, hyperbole, thy name is Microsoft.

...based on the most popular video game ever sold
So popular, it was the second best selling title of 2004! Oh, wait...
What was the best-selling game of '04?
I am usually not one to prognosticate a movie's future this far in advance, but I can safely say that Halo:The Movie, if it ever gets made will suck donkey balls. Unless its given a budget of 200 million dollar attached with a competent director and given 2 years of post production time, it can't be made well.

What I do expect to see is some poor starship troopers knockoff put together really quickly, with shitty CGI.

I can't get to a game site to verify but I believe it was SAN ANDREAS.

See, this is where the disconnect is coming from for a lot of us. Based on the plot of Halo, what makes it so special that it needs to be THE BIGGEST EVER if made into a film? What really separates it from any other Sci-Fi action movie, like Aliens, or Starship Troopers, or, hell, the Chronicles of Riddick? What is it about Halo that makes it so beyond reproach? Because to me, it's a really fun multiplayer game with a really generic single player campaign.

Ah, that makes quite a bit of sense. I wouldn't dispute that.
It was indeed San Andreas.

Halo 2 was second best-selling in the US. It was the ninth best-selling game of 2004 in Europe. Don't have figures for Japan, but given that only 12 people over there have an Xbox I'm guessing it didn't figure too highly.

Most popular videogame of all time ever? Nope. Not even close.
I read a lot of hubbub every now and again about The Sims being the most popular PC game of all time. How true is that?
I guess some people feel that Halo needs to be a gigantic mega-budget film because the game itself was pretty enjoyable. It's probably one of the most accessible and fun FPS games on the Xbox. Halo and Halo 2 were those special sorts of titles that could actually sell a console. Because of all this, gamers have a real attachment to the title. They want to get the same enjoyment from a movie as they did from playing a game.

I don't think that's entirely possible in this case. I love playing Halo. LOVE it. I mean, sure, I have the same gripes about the Library level in the first game as everyone else, but its easily my favorite game on the Xbox. Even so, I agree with those who call the story fairly generic and derivative. It isn't told particularly badly, but the story was never what interested me in the game. I was more interested in trying to make it through on legendary or seeing how many head shots I could rack up in multiplayer. I was barely aware of the story at all.
Yeah, I agree that the game (multiplayer) is very enjoyable, but the story behind the main game is nothing that requires 200 bazillion dollars and James Cameron and Steven Spielberg working in tandem while WETA and ILM create entirely new words for polygons. It's just nothing that special.
I think Zelda would get a movie deal before Halo. Heck Resident Evil got two movies. Mario even got a movie. It's no stretch to see Halo getting a movie, but as for it being good, that's a whole other matter entirely.
Now Ice Climbers, there's a videogame that needs Spielberg and Cameron.

There was a thread once upon a time full of spoof games-to-movies adaptations. My favourite was Pac-Man, starring Robert DeNiro as Detective Pacowski on the trail of illicit pills.
I was excited when I heard of an Elevator Action movie, then heartbroken to discover it wasn't an adaptation of one of my favorite video games but rather a generic porno flick. But my spirits were uplifted after watching the film*. . . .

* Everything in this post is a lie. Including this.

That's golden.
I would wager that at any given time, more people are playing City of Heroes or World of Warcraft than the Halos. Hell, Lineage has 4 million subscribers just in Korea.
What makes it especially interesting is that by pulling this silly stunt, and making their list of demands so public, Microsoft/Bungie/CAA may have shot themselves in the foot.

If all this had taken place behind closed doors, we'd probably be thinking - $5m for a Halo movie, with an Alex Garland script, and Fox/Universal behind it? Wow. Pretty impressive.

As it is, we know they went in with a list...and got nothing they asked for.

Their asking fee was halved (and split between two studios, which doesn't speak volumes for their confidence in the property)

Their rather naive demands about the production schedule were ignored.

Their insistence on complete creative control is..."under negotiation".

In the common youth parlance, I think Microsoft just got PWN3D.
Someone needs to find that thread. I remember it being pretty funny.
It should be added if it wasn't dropped before that for as many people who may be excited about a title like this, there is also a huge chunk of the populace who says "It's based on a video game? Fuck that."

Arkanoid III: The Stupid Fucking Flat Spacecraft Finally Gets Laser Guns tm

I think the Halo story could make a fine movie, if they went strictly with a big-budget actioner with simple yet solid plotting. The idea of finding this incredible Dyson's Sphere- type world and having all of the mystery behind how it got there, why there are aliens fighting you to ward you off of it, etc. would make excellent film fodder. You'd have to give the Master Chief an actual name though. If you could write dialogue for the group of soldiers they would show in a Halo movie tight like they did with the squad of marines in Aliens (i.e. not huge amounts of dialogue, but enough combined with good acting to make you believe the squad has fought and lived through many battles) this could be a Space Opera epic. M$ could make this film several times over using a budget of $200 Mil per movie and still not go bankrupt. Why they aren't thinking of doing it themselves or being the executive producer is beyond me.

Bill must be slipping. Isn't Microsoft's usual M.O. to just steal whatever makes a concept unique, call it something different, and slap an MS label on it? Shouldn't we be seeing Microsoft Visual products division pumping out non-interactive, theatrically screened extended cut scenes (don't call em movies or we'll get sued) based on all of their IP's by now?

Hm. That sounds a lot more vitriolic than I intended. Meh.
I think the fact that Microsoft aren't stumping up a chunk of the budget for this from their rather deep pockets may have raised a few eyebrows behind the scenes.

If a Halo movie is such a slam-dunk, why aren't they putting $20m behind it and looking for a production partner?

That's it. ALIENS isn't great because it's a kickass movie with badass marines and pulse rifles and alien queens. Well, that helps it, but it's great because Ripley is a character we can root for.

Exactly. You have to make the people believable, and make their occupations believable (i.e. they behave like soldiers who have known each other for a long time). You like Ripley because she is going through that journey we all have to go through of facing your fears. And they write it in a believable way. You either do that, or you make the entire thing a comedy where Master Chief is Bruce Campbell and absoluetly everything on the screen gets destroyed several times over, including Master Chief.

How about just screwing with the Halo fanatics' minds by doing a Metroid: Master Chief is actually a female under that plastic armor (the butch voice is from a voice modulator or just a Vader factor). Then cast Halle Berry.

hehehehehe Halo: The Crying Game. I like it!

Finding out what he looks like under there would be a start.

It's physically impossible. They'd need to go CGI for Master Chief, I think. The way he moves, the way he turns his head to look for stuff...I honestly can't think of any actors (living or dead) who could pull the nuances of that off and wear a helmet and carry a gun at the same time.

Pacino in his prime, maybe. But it'd be a stretch, even for him.

Or maybe Doug McClure.

Or Oliver Grunier.
I'm thinking Antonio Sabato Jr or Kane Hodder myself.

I'll keep my eye on which director lands the job.
I am not a big fan of the game, but it always struck me as funny that the green armour looked like BMX bike pads.

Casting?

Master Chief ---> Vinnie Jones

No, I wasn't being sarcastic, nor was I talking about the suit.
I think most people, or at least I, assume Master Chief to be a total badass along the lines of Dutch from Predator. Who do we have today along those lines? The Rock? Vin Diesel?
I don't think the studios will go with an unknown for a movie this big, so the list of A-list actors right for this part would be pretty slim. So by default it will probably go to Johnny Depp or Ben Stiller.
Well that makes sense. I think the suit looks ridiculous, but that's just my opinion.
It does seem like a rather difficult proposition to find someone for the uniform, and provided, that seems like a tough suit to make/move in for live-action outside of the realm of CGI.

And given the fact that MS isn't allowing for any deviations, that pretty much restricts what a director can do. I can understand comic book adaptations but, if anything, Halo's story is in need of some tooling.
