Here is a blast from the past. Anyone remember this flick? I been wanted to find this movie for a while and I don't think it's out on DVD yet. I read the synoposis on the flick and remember very little from it. I know the catch line was "Buy a bag and go home in a box" thought that was funny.

Based on the novel/play by Ben Elton? Didn't know there was a flick. IMDB time.

Like a poor man's Matinee.

Warning: somewhat spoilerish

Its main problem is that it sets up events that appear to be supernatural, and in the end it turns out that what's behind it isn't supernatural at all. This wouldn't be a problem, except that they never explain how all the supernatural-seeming events happened. Your average episode of Scooby Doo knows better than that.

Nice.

Good flick to watch for when you want to dumb down and enjoy the cheese.

Synopsis:

In this off-beat horror outing, a band of film students decide to scare up some cash by holding a film festival celebrating horror films from the '50s. Its all great fun until they discover that the projectionist is a homicidal maniac. Gory violence ensues as audience members begin dying in horrible ways.

"Popcorn" (1991) got a DVD release by Elite a couple of years back.

From the cover...

"Maggie (Jill Scoelen) is a film student who's been dutifully recording her nightmares - hairy hippie with dagger, trussed maiden on altar, terrified child fleeing through flames - only to see them unfold on screen when a '60's cult film, "The Professor," is discovered by fellow students preparing a fund-raising "horrorthon" at an abandoned art deco theatre called Dreamland. It seems that "The Professor's" director was a madman who killed his wife onstage and then burned down the theatre after locking the audience inside. Maybe he died in the fire... maybe he didn't. And just maybe... he's back.

"That's the central mystery, one that becomes crucial as Maggie's fellow film students start fading to black before their time."

Bonus Materials: Various theatrical trailers, TV spots and promotional footage.

Aspect Ratio: 1.85:1 (Enhanced for 16x9)

Running Time: 91 minutes

Turned into slasher-cliché pretty fast, but for a big part of the film it was very enjoyable for those that likes movies that refers to movies. Also Matinee was not horror so that make it pretty different by what it wants to accomplish.

I always meant to rent this one at the old video store in town, but never did. Maybe I'll catch it sometime soon.
