Sopranos Season 5 DVDs

Anybody pick this up or planning to? Once again it's light on extras and still has that jacked up HBO price but I still had to grab it. It's a great season, except for that crazy ass episode toward the end. One of the best things about it was that it reminded me that Steve Buscemi is still capable of more than just being a Sandler bit player or an animated voice.

A) HBO must charge high prices for their seasons in order to keep people from ditching their subscriptions in favor of simply buying box sets. I sure as hell would, considering HBO shows nothing but a standard set list of 15 crappy movies on heavy rotation each month.

B) I presume you are talking about the "Dream" episode with Annette Bening. That episode ruled.

I don't blame HBO for making a buck or 2, God knows I wasn't paying for the channel when I watched the last few seasons as they aired so it's only fair they get a little payback come DVD time.

"The Sopranos" have usually done a great job of using dreams to get into their characters' heads but that episode felt like David Lynch put a gun to David Chase's crotch. I kept waiting for Agent Cooper to dance with a midget. I'll forgive it because the rest of the season was top notch and they made good use of Tim Daly.

That dream episode was a little frightening (the dream went on for like twenty minutes), but they made up for it by making the last two episodes some of the best of the series.

I absolutely loved that dream episode. It was a trippy review of what informs Tony's psyche.

I'm not saying it was nonsensical, just that it went way farther out there than any previous dream sequences, which the Sopranos had always done very wel), and could have been spread out more over the episode so as not to deviate as wildly from the show's established style (and draw so many Lynch comparisons).

The dreams Tony had when he was figuring out Big Pussy was working for the feds were done about as well as can be imagined. Maybe I will be bothered less by last season's dream heavy episode when I get to it on the DVDs but even if I'm not, 12 out 13 is still a Hall of Famer in any man's league.

I ordered my copy from Amazon, so it's on its way in the mail.

I am not looking for big extras on these discs. The quality of the show more than makes up for a lack of special features.

That's for sure, I seem to never get around to watching the extras on TV DVD sets a lot of the time anyway. I do remember the first season set had a great long interview with David Chase, it would be nice if there was something like that for every season. There are some commentaries on this set that sound like they might be a good listen.
