Picking up this piece of joy today. Anyone else?
I'm considering it, but my lack of disposible income is convincing me to rent it instead.
today? holy jesus....awesome.
Sweet. I am now!

Wait a minute.... every place says it comes out tomorrow.... what is this foolery? Damn you all!
I've found conflicting release dates, but none of them are today. Are you sure? The earliest date I've got is the 19th, which makes no sense. When have they ever released a game on a Sunday?

Weird. I picked mine up at my local Gamestop (where I had it reserved) around 3:00 this afternoon. Playing it now, as a matter of fact.
So the release dates given on Internet sites were complete bullshit? What were the odds? You'd think I'd have learned to stop being surprised by now.

Okay, I paused and saved my fun with probes to produce some photographic evidence:

I don't think anybody was saying we didn't believe you, but thanks.

Now I have to decide which Gamefly disc is going back so I can get this one.

Oh, I know my word wasn't being questioned. But now you can tell the people at the game stores that they're full of shit if they claim that no one's released the game today. In fact, I got one of those automated voice mail messages from Gamestop YESTERDAY notifying me that the game would be available today.

What is the verdict, Carl?
I liked the demo, but I'd love to hear a little more from Carl on the gameplay. Plus, I too didn't think this would be out until this Tuesday.

All-in-all... GREAT!

Played this until about 1AM last night.

Quick first impressions:

... Yes, it's part GTA, part MERCENARIES... but the 50's B-movie sci-fi setting and feel appeals to me much more than the other two, so I actually prefer this.

... It's a little less non-linear than I had hoped. At least in the initial Missions. Basically, the Mothership sends you on a particular mission in small town. Once that mission is complete, you can either return directly to the Mothership (for the next mission, upgrades, to save the game, etc) or you can stick around the invasion site and destroy some more. Which is actually fun, because there are mini-games and missions and other hidden items. Plus, the more people you kill and collect DNA from the more "money" (DNA) you have to purchase upgrades with. But what I had hoped was that you can go anywhere in the game at any time and just wreak havoc. But you have to get a mission to a particular town or city before you can visit it. And you can't do that until you have completed the previous mission. Oh well. It's not at all a hindrance (because it's all so fun), just slightly disappointing.

... I don't care how many times you do it, throwing a cow through the air and crashing it against a tree... or killing a person, making their head and explode and collecting their brains for DNA never gets old!

... The Havoc physics engine is put to beautiful use in this game. Not only the animal and human destruction, but I found myself just flying around in my saucer and laying waste to buildings, vehicles, and more. And I haven't even gotten to the bigger towns and the saucer upgrades yet!

... There are some neat, clever, and very subversive little bits of comedy throughout, and some great references to Sci-Fi serials and B-movies of the past.

... I can't wait to play it some more!

Sweet! Thanks, Carl. I might be hitting the Gamestop this very afternoon...
Thanks, Carl. Be sure to let us know how long/involved the game winds up being. I don't have any money for a purchase right now, so if it's too lengthy for a weekend rental I'm gonna have to wait it out.

Also, how the hell did this get a "Teen" rating? In the demo I was making heads explode and burning people alive.
Yeah, I bought this yesterday too, and I didn't even have it reserved. I think it's awesome. We'll have yet to see if that awesomeness sticks around, or if it kind of disappears like it did with Spidey 2. I had the same initial reaction, but after a while swinging around New York, I thought "Is this all there is?" I hope I don't have the same reaction to this game.

I love the main character's "boss" alien. You can never go wrong getting the guy who voiced Zim to play an world-invading alien.

Soon as I fired up the game and saw Criswell fade in, I knew I was in for something special. This game is awesome so far. I love administering the super-head-exploding anal probes.
I was playing it last night and I had a blast. Not only that but I got the upgrade for my psychic powers so I can pick up cars now as well. And there's nothing finer than swinging a car into a load of police who are shooting at you.

Screw them. I guess if it had a hip-hop music soundtrack and the Crypto character spoke in ebonics they would give it at least a 9.
I just read through IGN's review; and although I'm still into the level where my mission involves collecting brain stems and harvesting DNA (hmm, guess which one?), I fear that this game will become repetitive. I was enjoying it for about an hour, but I couldn't help but feel it being monotonous.

Spider-Man 2 was somewhat like that but for some reason, I could play that game for hours on end. And I also love the theme of DAH! but the gameplay sometimes is somewhat becoming of a chore. Oddly enough, Carl, I would put down DAH! and continue to play my XBOX version of GTA:SA.

Carl, will there be further clever bits like the one with the Mayor? Mostly gameplay that take a break from the monotony? Even the saucer bit is starting to lose its luster. I mean, what kind of invading saucer would only land on specific checkpoints? And what kind of saucer fly on a single predetermined altitude?

The cutscenes and dialog are just so great that when you start to play it, the AI in this world just end up being extraordinarily lame. I'm not looking for Splinter Cell-like AI awareness, but these cats are just beyond stupid. (Perhaps it gets harder later though, right?) And I'm getting somewhat aggravated at the repeating comments they're thinking every time I do a Cortex Scan... And speaking of Splinter Cell, why couldn't I crouch or crawl? Why is my only option is to HoloBob someone else?

One other gripe: people I've neutralized would disappear if I leave them for a bit to dispatch an annoying MIB or cop. Even annoying is if said vanished victim had an extracted brain stem for me to pick up. WTF? Speaking of this, a car I plan on levitating to destroy a tank with quickly vanishes the moment I turned my back on it! I then experimented by letting a car go behind me only to disappear when I turned around... And a minor gripe is the inconsistency of the targeting system. It seems to have a mind of its own -- it's specifically aggravating during the level where I'm picking up the protected overloaded brains.

It's not that I hate it, it's just that I wish it's more fun -- meaning, more variety in the stuff that I get to do. I wish that I get to do more Alien-stuff like possessing someone and creeping others instead of just using it to fool unsuspecting cops. I wish that there were more cheesy weapons rather than weapon upgrades. Or at least give me more freedom with how I handle my saucer...

I don't know. I'm gonna play it some more and see if my opinion changes.

Just became rental first, thanks V.
I was tempted to go pick this up but I am currently unemployed, so it'll have to wait, and it's rented out so i'll have to give it time

Inform us of any boredom that sets in Carl.
Between having a real job and a fiancee, my video game time is very short, but I'm still having a blast playing it. Maybe I just haven't played it enough, but I haven't gotten bored or frustrated with it.
It's not bad, but I'm glad I didn't buy it. Kind of the same thing over and over and there really isn't any reason to do much exploring, there isn't really anything to find. I also gave up stealing brains after an hour or so, much easier just to run through a crap mini-game every now and then. The fun of blowing up towns is also offset by the fact that nothing you do to them is permanent or has any impact on gameplay.

I'd guess after one night of playing for a few hours I'm probably more than halfway through the game.

I can't play it again until I get back home over the weekend.
Wow, a little less than six hours of game time (at least two of that was screwing around and collecting DNA) and I finished the game with a 76% completion. The only thing I didn't finish was finding all the little robots things (they don't do anything but unlock movie clips and such). I would get the rest but a lack of overhead map and the fact that everything looks the same just makes it more trouble than it's worth.

I died seven times in the whole game, four of those were from the stupid fucking stealth missions. The stealth elements later on in the game are the reason I have no desire to play through this again, they just aren't fun.

Really, really glad I didn't buy this.
Wow, I guess Carl and I are the only ones who actually like it then. Oh well, I'm still having fun.
It's a fun enough game, but it gets old really, really quickly.
I have to say, I'm not finding myself all that entertained by this one. Presentation and production values are great, but the gameplay just feels kinda lacking somehow.
So yeah, I bought 'Destroy All Humans' on Saturday and I beat it yesterday. Kinda wishing I'd rented it now instead of buying it, because it just doesn't have much replay value to it. When the story campaign was still going, there was lots of humor to be had but once that's over, it just turns into an endless chaos-festival. Now, causing chaos in DAH is quite fun. It's almost like pairing Mercenaries with Psi-Ops (only without the wholesale destruction potential of Mercenaries and the glorious splatter of Psi-Ops), and there's just something... ENTERTAINING about picking up a tank with your mind and using it to flatten government agents like the world's biggest explosive fly-swatter. But there's no incentive to the creation of chaos, it seems, and all the atmosphere and humor all but disappears when it turns into free-roaming. It's a great concept for a game and I look forward to a next-gen version of it with more options and maybe with all the levels in one giant environment, but interest was lost quickly on my end.

Rental for sure.

You gotta admit though, they could work on what didn't work and make a helluva sequel.
I'm done with Pandemic.
Underwhelming, especially when you compare it with Pandemic's previous pandemonium-like game Mercenaries. The presentation is awesome, but the actual game loses it's appeal so very quickly.
I bought it, I beat it and I wouldn't play it again. I was so looking forward to this game too. But it go so repeative so fast.
God, the story had some funny moments in it, most of them courtesy of Zim's voice actor. I'm still cracking up thinking about his reaction to the events in the 'The Lone Gunman' mission.

Wish the game had had more of stuff like that after the story ended.
Nice concept, half-assed execution. I don't understand how Mercenaries was able to have helicopters with full freedom of movement, while the UFO in this just rolls around on a fixed plane, shooting straight ahead.

Also, the game really needs to let you back into the action straight away when you die. Instead you have to go back to the hangar, choose the mission, load the mission, watch the landing animation and then - finally - get back to what you were doing.

And the gameworld needs to be more permanent. It's downright weird to have a mission that involves destroying all the buildings, only for them to be magically rebuilt later.

I mean, I'm not hating the game, there's a lot of fun stuff in here, but it falls way, way short of what it could have been.

All I know is that the commercial for this game is hilarious.
