Scrubs

Always loved this show, but taking in the entire 1st season in two nights has iced it for me: best current comedy on television. Not even close.

Oh, and it's official... John C. McGinley is a god.

"Oh, I think I've had enough of YOU...good-bye, Attila."

Amen. Even Intensity ruled somewhat when he was in-frame.

The DVD review discussion thread just wasn't good enough.

My apologies, sir. I caught your review a while back but never noticed the review discussion thread.

Golden that you enjoy the show as much as I expected you would!

I've been watching a lot of tv lately, and there was a week where I alternated this and Sports Night.

Scrubs rules, and Johnny C. is my new hero. Consider me on the bandwagon.

I won't bother bringing up Arrested development...oops I did. But the world of sitcoms is clearly a two dog race between AD and scrubs.

They're too good to be considered Sit-Coms, which are generally the dregs of television.

One season of SCRUBs is superior to 100 seasons of SEINFELD.

Yeah, I said it.

Unfortunately, I've had to give up on Scrubs. The first couple of seasons were brilliant, some of the finest comedy every to appear on television (now that's a ringing endorsement, given that it's sharing the genre with Joanie Loves Chachi). But as I feared, it couldn't maintain its edge week after week indefinitely, and it's really declined for me. I'll always treasure what he had together, but I need to see other shows.

Faze, I'm going to agree with you and add Curb and (hides) Reno to that list. Yeah fuck you.

That ludicrous Seinfeld comment won't warrant a full response from me.

Scrubs always had a really awkward time (at least in season 1 - i never was hooked enough to continue watching) when it tried to sneak into dramatic territory every episode or two. There always seemed to be some scene that tried to deliver a poignant message, but only ended up leaving a bad taste in your mouth. The only sitcom I've ever seen successfully navigate the subtle adjustment into drama would be the Office, and Cheers might get an honorable mention.

Oh, please. Go watch a few episodes of MASH.

I respectfully disagree Danny, I think scrubs shines in both the comedy and drama moments, especially whne it comes to John C. And I think the seasons are staying great as they go, though they have yet to eclipse season two. I will admit however, that I have pretty much become a drooling fan-boy of the show, considering my roommate and myself refer to tuesday as "scrubsday".

Time for the obligatory Office plug, although in this case, as it pertains to the American version.

Own the entire British series on DVD, and have caught most of the first season of the American version. I think I only missed the final episode.

The British version is better, both in terms of the subtler way they treat Tim and Dawn, and in the department of humor. Plus Ricky Gervais's boss is a much more despicable man than Steve Carrell's.

But the American version is pretty damned good, too. It's head and shoulders above all the other comedies on American television right now, to be frank; apart from -- perhaps -- Arrested Development. Steve Carrell is one of the great underrated comic geniuses of the day. He played a supporting role to, of all people, Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty and absolutely stole the fucking show, and, even more stunning, had the single funniest scene in the entire wretched movie. Now THAT'S talent.

And the two shows are different enough that I think any grousing about which is better is mostly sour grapes. The American version is different...no quiz programs...instead, we get basketball.

Both shows have their moments of profound genius:
"God, I guess, would be fourth."

"I don't know Monkey Allen, but I'll bet...look, just go away."

"As Abraham Lincoln once said, 'If you are a racist...I will attack you with the North.' And I strive to live by that principle every day."

"She's dead! She's not dead!!"

The cast is better in the British version, I think, and, on the whole, it's more consistently funny in general.

But both versions have merit.

I always liked this show from the get. Haven't kept up with it the past year but this DVD is a treat. Like NEWS RADIO's first three seasons it has a solid cast that form together like Voltron and kick your fucking ass.

Interesting analogy. I'll definitely be stealing that in conversation with my friends.
