PS2 problems

post #1 of 7

I accidently smacked my PS2 with my foot the other day and it's stopped reading any of my games.

I can put a game in and it will play the intro, main menu, etc. It also is still reading DVDs fine as well. But whenever it goes to access the memory card it locks up and makes a sort of whirring noise, like it's failing to read the disc.

Any ideas what it may be? I think I may have knocked the laser thingy out of alignment. Anybody know a quick fix for this, or an average cost about getting this repaired?

I was looking forward to renting Destroy All Humans! today, but I guess that'll have to wait.

There are a number of guides to fixing, realigning and even replacing the laser. Just use google, here's one that seems pretty good:

Of course, it voids your warranty but its probably already expired anyway.

Call Sony support and don't mention that you kicked it. Just describe the problems you're having now, they might think you have a defective drive and fix it for free which they did with mine ( I didn't kick it though). Mine was way out of warrantly (recently fixed it and it was one of the first models).

Works great now.

BTW before i sent mine in, I opened it and tried to clean the lens too, which worked ... for a while.

I didn't tell support i had opened it, and whoevered fixed my laser didn't care, because the sticker was broken and they could have said no. Still, if you plan on sending it to sony, don't open it ... yet.

I think they stopped the whole fixing for free thing in April of this year. Apparently they only did it after a class action lawsuit agreement, and now the agreement is over. Of course, calling Sony support couldn't hurt to see if I'm full of shit or not.

You're right, seems like the that's over (wow, I'm lucky I did it early this year!).

As of April 4th, if your PS2 is not uder warranty, they don't do a free DRE repair. Also, unless you make a big fuss about needing the old model to play FFXI, they will replace the unit you send in with a slim model, instead of fixing the old model, and fixing the old model costs more than the replacement.

SCEA is doing this partly because they don't manufacture HDD-compatible models anymore (only SCEJ still does) and they seem to be trying to thwart any more use of HDLoader/HDAdvance.
Try calling Sony anyways, see if they fix it (1-800-345-SONY). Tell them you are getting "DISC READ ERROR" ,other times that the thing just spins, and then the problems you just described, you might get lucky.

If they want to charge you just forget it and try the DRE tricks here;
