Deadwood Season 1

I just finished watching the fifth episode. What an amazing show. I absolutely love how the focus is on the characters rather than the genre--these folks could be in any period--and the ideas it floats about creating order without law, and how a community is formed.

And Ian McShane? Guy's like a god.

...it gets even better. I haven't been this wowed by a show in years. So nice to see characters that are devoid of any pure good guy/bad guy distinction.

And lots of really ugly dirty people- it is so funny to see clips from "Into the West" with all of it's gleaming Hollywood faces. Deadwood instantly makes most frontier dramas look like farce. Actually, in a way, it reminds me of Monty Python & The Holy Grail- a period piece unafraid to have everyone and everything covered in layers of filth and grime.

Deadwood is quite funny too. Most of the humor is rather dark of course, but I laughed out loud pretty reliably thoughout the season.

Anyone know how long the wait is until season 2 comes out on DVD?

My guess is it will be released close to the premiere of Season 3 next year.

Just finished "Mr. Wu"; two more episodes to go.

The thing I love most about this show is that it's so grey. I think the line that sums it up best is from one of the commentary tracks, where they talk about how Swearengen isn't such a bad guy as compared to an evil fucker like Tolliver.

Also, I agree about the dark humor. I was laughing out loud several times during "Mr. Wu," especially when Swearengen and Wu are dealing with each other.

The first season is great. I watched most of the second and while it isn't bad it is definitely not as good as the first.

"Cocksucker!"
A TV station here (TV4) is showing the first season, and I'm watching it religiously.
Haven't seen the final episode yet, it'll be on this Friday.

I was really surprised with the way they chose to end the season. It was very subdued, but totally perfect.

"I'm so glad I taught you that word."

Saw the last ep yesterday, and i have to say it's one of the best hours of Television I've seen. Well, that may be hyperbole, but I'm pretty much blown away. The season plot threads come together in the end; beautifully, realistically and with drama so intense it's like apunch to the gut. This is Sopranos-level good television.

I get the feeling I'll love this as much as LOST actually - just haven't seen any of it yet.

Almost tempted to pick up season one sight unseen.

It's been a week since I finished, and I can't get that last scene in "Jewel's Boot is Made For Walking" out of my goddamn head. Hell, I can't get most of the season out of my head. Especially the Plague episodes--those are some of my favorites.

I've watched Seasons 1 and 2 all the way through about five times each, and every episode still has resonance and reveals something new with each viewing. When I don't have anything interesting to watch late at night, I put Deadwood in. It's just amazing.

i love the way the writers have given each of the main characters their own speach patterns that have been consistent for (at least) the entire first season (i haven't seen the second). it's not just the simple swearing, with clamity jane using "fucking" every three words, or swearengen's predilection for "cucksucker". it's the way they say things that follows persistent patterns. lazy writers would have instead just let everyone say "fucking" all the time and be happy about it.

i also love the fact that they weren't afraid of killing off some of the main characters or simply let them temporarily disappear from the story. a truly amazing series.

Let's not forget just how fucking phenomenal the entire cast is: McShane, Olyphant, and Brad Dourif get most of the praise in the reviews that I've read, but their performances wouldn't be nearly as effective without W. Earl Brown, Paula Malcolmson, John Hawkes, and Robin Weigert to play off of. Malcolmson and Weigert (who can turn on a fucking dime) are probally my two favorite characters in the show, and Hawkes is just solid, although it's hard for me to not see that guy from "From Dusk 'Till Dawn" every so often.

Any mention of the cast HAS to include William Sanderson as E.B. Farnum. Especially in the second season, he is absolutely phenomenal, particularly in his monolgues, which, between the wrtiting and his performance, become almost Shakespearean.

And every time I see Hawkes I keep thinking he should be drowning on a swordfish boat....

Sanderson is very good at playing a completely amoral, greasy little shit, isn't he? I love his monologue when he's cleaning up the bloodstain.

Also, the commentary tracks on this set are great, too. There's one where Dourif and Weigert talk about how "motherfucker" is the only bit of language that's not period.

It is true that on the show, McShane falls somewhere between fried gold and a blowjob in a can, but my favorite performances come from Brown and Malcomson (Dan and Trixie the whore). They should make up Emmy's to give them. "Best Prostitute in a Period Piece" and "Best Professional Murderer" or something.

he truly is phenomenal. i love that they've chosen to not portray dan as an expectedly evil character, and instead have him be the kind of goon who follows orders simply because he's loyal, not because he gives a shit. he's the western equivalent of a concentration camp guard.

I just found out today that W. Earl Brown, the guy playing Dan Doherty, also played Meat Loaf in a VH1 movie. That, for some reason, tickles me to no end.

He also played Mary's retarded brother Warren in There's Something About Mary. That shocked the hell out of me when I realized who he was. That guy is a great fucking actor.

And a biker in an episode of "Six Feet Under" (which also featured Molly Parker as a rabbi).

Yeah, Dan is definitely one of my favorite characters/actors on the show. I love that scene at the end of the second episode between him and Doc, and then when they go and lie, bald-faced, to Al, and Al lets them get away with it.

I love Molly Parker. Had to rent Center of the World to see just what she's capable of.

Well I picked it up sight unseen, finished it last night and thats it - "hooked" doesnt cover my response to this show.

I think it may possibly be my favourite tv show ever.

It's like when Im reading a truely awesome novel and I cant put the fucking book down. The characters all feel like good friends - I seriously didnt want this to end.

It's also the first of all the shows Ive been addicted to in the last few years (mostly by HBO) that - as with movies I adore - I could honestly go back to episode one when these dvd's are finished and start watching all over again.

Im that hooked - its like televisual smack.

The writing and acting are truely as good as anything Ive seen and Im a lifelong cinephile western lover raised by a cinephile western lover (Ive only recently realised I have more westerns in my dvd collection than any other single genre) - I never had a chance as far as holding out against a Deadwood obsession goes

This shows so fucking good Im tempted to double dip and re-buy season one from the US because it has two extra disks of extras rather than just the basic series like the aussie release has (which I consider a helluva fucking rip)

There isnt a single character in this show I dont love.

This show has me hooked like the best novels crossed with my favourite westerns.

Just fucking brilliant.

Utterly utterly brilliant.

I might have to grab my own copy of season two as soon as it's released on dvd in the states.

This show has been so swiftly taken to my bosom its incredible.

Thing is, Ive been watching it with my partner and shes always fucking hated westerns - but she adores the hell out of this.

It made me feel all warm inside by the last episode when Seth picks up the sherrifs star out of the mud and she started screaming "Yeah! Come ooooon!" and applauding.

I cannot find a single fucking thing wrong with this show - in fact, theres nothing I don;t even just feel okay with - I love every single fucking aspect start to finish.

Now bring on season 2.

After reading the unanimous praise in this thread, I decided to pick up the season DVD set and I'm floored, just a great show alround. I was never a fan of NYPD Blue but David Milch has created an excellent show here, the characters never devolve into stereotypes, I like that the female characters don't get sidelined in this show, you have Calamity Jane (I think Wiegert's maybe the definitive version, even with the swearing, every scene with her is gold) Joanie Stubbs, Alma Garrett, Trixie, all fascinating characters. When I saw the cover I thought Michael Biehn was in it but it turns out, it was just Timothy Olyphant and he does a damn good job, he does give off a great Biehn vibe with his character though. It's a shame Keith Carradine only did a few episodes as Bill, he was great, I hope he does more stuff like this instead of the usual movie of the week stuff he's been doing for the last 10 years.

What I also liked are the moments of levity in this series, the slow deterioration of the priest, the scene in the hardware store was actually quite moving, Calamity Jane and Charlie Utter talking at Bill Hickock's grave. Just seriously great writing and direction. Brad Dourif's performance in the final episode is either serious overacting or some seriously great acting, I'm not sure which.

What I also love about this show is the humor, it's never forced and mostly done through character and situations, Al telling the junkie who shit his pants to jump off the balcony and then lie in the mud and the junkie does it, "I'll just turn over so I don't get trampled on"

Man, Tolliver is an evil fucker, even though those two kids knew what they were doing it still slapped me in the face.

Glad to see you were floored by it like I was DM.

Im still trying to work out my favourite character - I simply cant decide, each character is so uniquely brilliant in their own right.
