Chewers' Top 100 TV Shows

Thread Starter
Last year around this time we ran and organized a poll to come up with our 100 favorite movies (1? Apocalypse Now). It was a really fun time and provoked a lot of interesting discussion. I thought we could do something similar this year, only with TV shows.

Here are some guidelines:

1. The TV shows can come from any genre, time period, or country (includes anime series). Documentary series like "America Undercover" and "Frontline" and Reality TV both count, but Nightly News casts do not.

2. It's reccomended that you stick to shows that have either been cancelled or have been on for at least two seasons. This rule will not be enforced, but it saves the top 10 from being dominated by shows that were just on (Lost, Desperate Housewives, Veronica Mars). However, shows that were only on for one season yet were excellent (Firefly, although that's nowhere near my top 10) count.

3. I'll do the organizing and polling. Send me your lists through PM or e-mail to brendan.heldenfels@gmail.com. You can list any number of shows between 100 and 10.

4. In terms of determining which is #1, we'll use the point scale process. For example, if your top 10 looked like this:

Johnny Come Lately's Top 10 Shows of All Time
1. West Wing
2. Silk Stalkings
3. NYPD Blue
4. ER
5. Captain Planet and the Planeteers
6. Lost in Space
7. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
8. Frontline
9. Upstairs, Downstairs
10. The Office

West Wing would be awarded 100 points, Silk Stalkings 99 points, NYPD Blue 98 points, and so forth and so on. The totals for each series would be added together to determine which places the highest.

5. Let's say that the deadline for this is two weeks from today (if this is too long, we can change it--I want this to be a group thing). I'll then post the winners, counting down from 100, in a separate thread.

6. Feel free to post your individual lists here, or we can create a seperate thread for discussion as well.

This should be fun if we get a lot of people to participate.

Again, PM your lists or send them to me at brendan.heldenfels@gmail.com, and let's get some discussion going!
There are only two that matter:

1. Batman: The Animated Series
2. The Twilight Zone

Would the Conan O' Brien show count? If so, that's #3.
So will Futurama finish ahead of The Simpsons? All signs point to yes.
1) Cheers

2) Quantum Leap

3) The Office (UK)

4) The Simpsons

5) South Park

6) Futurama

7) I'm Alan Partridge

8) Monty Python's Flying Circus

9)The Fast Show (don't know if you ever got that in the US, but it was brilliant)

10) 24

Seems like a hokey list, but you can't tell me what I do or don't like. The Sopranos is amazng, but I just haven't seen enough of it to put it on a "favourite list", likewise Six Feet Under. Give them 11th and 12th positions if you like.

And let me say right now, if one person puts Will and Grace on their list, I will devote my life to making sure they cannot breed.

Yeah, late night talk shows are worthy of inclusion. Just make sure you list the host so we can tell them apart. For example, "Late Night with David Letterman" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brian" would be two seperate entries, as would "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
If anyone includes The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, they're on that same list Sackley is putting together for Will and Grace fans.

I'm reluctant to include shows that are still running, as you never know which might crash and burn so badly that they tarnish what came before (X-Files, Northern Exposure).

Shows that haven't been around long enough yet, but have the potential to crack my top 10 include: Nip/Tuck, House, Lost, and Deadwood.

TV has easily surpassed movies as my medium of choice for entertainment. I find myself looking forward to far more TV shows than films these days. And thanks to the Happy Box (Tivo), I can watch them all in the middle of the night, when I'm in greatest need of entertaining.

Timeless Classics that I will always love and buy on DVD.

1.) The Simpsons - Even if you think it has declined in recent years, you can't beat 10 solid years at peak genius.

2.) NewsRadio - Phil Hartman as Bill McNeil is my favorite TV character ever, plus had an amazing esemble around him.

3.) Northern Exposure - An amazing show that made you think as well as laugh. Had the ability to transport me as a viewer to another place.

4,) 3rd Rock from the Sun - John Lithgow as Dick, the High Commander, was a tour de force, second only to Phil Hartman in my mind. The supporting characters weren't as strong as the casts above on list.

5.) Cheers - Timeless comedy. I have watched this show countless times and it still is hilarious. Sam and Diane are the best love-hate dynamic ever represented on TV

6.) Larry Sanders - Groundbreaking show that made me sign up for HBO. It is the supporting characters that make this show such genius.

7.) Seinfeld - Like in Larry Sanders, great supporting cast around great but low-key lead.

8.) Futurama - A genius show that is a close second to the Simpsons at its peak, but only 4 seasons lower this show down the list.

9.) The Office (UK) - This would be higher, but it was only 12 episodes plus a Christmas special.

10.) Felicity - Personal Guilty Pleasure

Arrested Development rules, but with a few exceptions (Deadwood and Veronica Mars being the others), it looks like most of these lists consist of series that have gone off the air, or have more than two seasons under their belt. Which isn't surprising.
