Over There on DVD

I read somewhere that Over There, the show that fX is debuting in July, will release a DVD of the first episode very soon after it hits tv. Does anyone know anything about this? Or why they would do that?

If they've got a great opener, it makes sense that they would want as many people as possible to see it. Since an overwhelming majority of TV watchers won't tune into FX the night it premieres, getting a DVD out gives them another chance to hook new viewers for subsequent episodes. My guess is that (aside from any nationwide mass market promotion and retail sales) they'll focus their DVDs on military magazines, military family groups, military bases, etc.

Jack & Bobby did it last year by including the pilot on DVDs inserted into Entertainment Weekly. The show was great, but the ratings weren't very high, so the WB decided to can it.

I remeber the same idea being kicked around for the pilot episode of Lost, but I'm not sure why the decided not to. Being the hit that it was, I'm surprised ABC didn't try to milk it.

I don't remember having seen anyone try and do this, so it seemed like a pretty cool idea to me. I'm definitely going to watch Over There when it comes out, but I guess the DVD will try and entice additional viewers before it gets too far into the season. It's a pretty interesting marketing strategy.

Didn't they do this with the first episode of the 2nd or 3rd season of 24? I thought they gave them away at Best Buy or something.

they gave away the first 24 minutes of the 4th season of 24 in EW. they also had the first ep of House in one issue. I also recently got the first ep of Stella handed to me at a concert. i think its a smart way to build word of mouth on a tv show before the first ep even airs, since the nielsens of the first few eps are becoming more and more like the equivalent of an opening weekend of a flick

I would love to see the figures on how many people tune into the show becuase of the immediate release. I'm excited to see over There and am looking forward to seeing what type of impact the DVD release has.
