I hate to praise Devin but his review kicked ass. Good to hear Spielberg remembered how to scare people. The more reviews I read the more I'm wondering if I shouldn't take my kids to see this. I can't friggin wait.

This is the first SS movie I have been looking forward to since .... hummm .... well, a long time

Anyways, Floyd, it's good to be back - I've missed you and ( most of ) the others 'round here ...

Good to see you still hanging out too Elmie. There just hasn't been much to talk about horror-wise this year aside from Land of the Dead though Devil's Rejects is right around the corner and I'll be all over that.

It seems this is more like the Jaws era Spielberg than anything else. I'm thinking this might have more horror in it than Land of the Dead did.

Yeah, so that movie was fucking awesome.

Just saw it tonight. Here's what you should do: go to the movie, revel in its brilliance for an hour and a half, then walk out. You'll have seen the best alien invasion film ever made. Seriously, it's that good. Stark, brutal, heroism-free, and utterly real and uncompromising. Leave, and that's what you'll walk away with. Stay, and you'll be treated to the sight of this cinematic masterpiece bending over backwards and sucking its own ass for the last half hour.

After the first two acts, I wanted to kiss Spielberg on the mouth. By the end of the third act, I wanted to punch him in the neck. Honestly, I don't know if they actually called a meeting of cast and crew and voted to remove their balls in the final act, and give in to the temptation to make a summer blockbuster after all, but that's how it felt. They utterly betrayed the truly great film they started out with, and finished it out with Mission: Impossible 3.

I smell post-test-audience rejiggering. "Why isn't Tom Cruise fighting the aliens?" "Oh fine, here you go. Now run off and play."

Awesome movie I thought, riveting, scary all the right moves...

Except the ending, dammit Steven, can't you resist improbable happiness?

the ending's the same as the original and the book

though i will admit, i was hoping they'd come up with something more creative

I think he was referring to the ending wherein the ex-wife and her parents are in an untouched suburb, and his son is still alive, and all is right with the world, not the disease part.

It's The Searchers. It's not that happy.

Pshaw, that's not a suburb, that's Boston (looks like the Back Bay area)

And of course Boston survived, its the Hub of the Universe! The aliens saw it and were overwhelmed by its greatness, that's what really killed them.

the son should've been killed though. What sort of lesson is this for kids? Disobey your parents and everything will work out? You can survive massive explosion? Whatever.

As a note for the actual resolution, I Was sitting with a friend who had neither read the book, nor seen the George Pal version, so she had no idea what was killing the aliens. When the explanation is given, its not very helpful.
