OK, so, I bought a new XBox yesterday, therefore replacing the shitty first gen one with the Thompson DVD drive that was causing me so much pain in recent months. Opened it, hooked it up, plays all the newer games just fine and dandy (still don't know why we need to see the word "Loading" in San Andreas).
So, as I prepared to make the jump from the first XBox to the new one, a horrible realization was made.
The realization that not only are custom soundtracks unable to be saved to a memory card to be transferred (which isn't so bad, considering that the new drive burns songs infinitely faster than the last one)....but so are a shitload of games. The most heartbreaking of which being KOTOR.....there's a combined total (Between the good guy Jedi I beat the game with, and the Sith witch I was 21 hours into going on a total Dark Side rampage with before Episode III came out) of about 70 hours worth of gameplay that I'm now going to lose because Microsoft, for reasons I don't quite comprehend, won't let me save it to the memory card (and for the record, I bought a 32MB card, so space isn't the issue.). In the same boat are Ninja Gaiden, Halo 1, my Halo 2 Game Save (weirdly enough, my custom games and my profile were savable), Jade Empire, Shenmue II, and Burnout 3 (also heartbreaking considering how hard I had to work to pass the time challenge with that piece of crap Classic Hot Rod).
So my questions are threefold:
1: WHY?!
2. What will this mean for the 360? Granted, it looks like most current XBox games won't be playable on that damn thing anyway, but what's going to happen if people can't bring their saves for those playable games over to the new system?
3. Finally, on a slightly off-topic note....I was hopeful I'd get a Samsung DVD drive in the new XBox, since apaprently that's the best one....and I followed this picture to try and figure out which drive I had:

And the verdict is: None of the above. The tray I have is shaped like the Thompson, but the hole is a lot wider. And no, it's not a Thompson, made obvious by the fact that it actually WORKS. Dunno if anybody knows what it is, but while I've got the opportunity, might as well ask....
