What should the next GTA be?

I like how when the GTA locations change, the writing and "acting" changes.

So where should they place the new one?

I enjoyed the country in SA so much that I vote for New Orleans and the area around it. Call it GTA: Dirty South or something. You can keep the urban stuff by using New Orleans and say Mississippi and the area around them both can be dense swamp-land and country woods and mountains. You could kill KKK, racist cops, crooked politicians and even the food could be different such as gumbo and grits.

That game would have a lot of annoying accents IMO. I think Texas would be good, or maybe if it's on PS3 a huge selection of several different states (the PS3's disks are gonna be huge).

I'd like to see Hawaii. Make it an insane take on "Magnum P.I." the way "Vice City" was a parody of SCARFACE and "Miami Vice."

GTA: Motor City
GTA: Haiti
GTA: We Finally Got Round Tires on the Vehicles

I'd like to see a return to Liberty City with GTA: East Coast. Except since the maps are getting larger and larger they should just do the whole tri-state area. The three islands of Liberty City and the lower tip of New York state, the top of New Jersey, and the bottom of a Connecticut/Massachusetts amalgam. The Jersey city could be Atlantic City (fulfilling the casino requirement), and the New England city could be Boston.

The best part about the East Coast is the complete variety in the towns that would make up the space between the different cities. Old-fashioned mill towns with old victorian houses, rural farm towns with lots of woods and lakes, upper-crust suburbs where every neighborhood has a classy/bland name like "Acorn Meadows" on a sign at the entrances, old-school shoreline fishing communities like Amity from Jaws, or paved-over ex-farm towns where the every square foot is an industrial park or strip mall or parking lot.

The East Coast probably has the biggest variety in gangs as well, with the Italian mafia, the Irish mobs in Boston, the Chinese mafia, the Russians, the Serbs and imported gangsters from a half-dozen other Eastern-European countries, the Greeks, the cartels from Central and South America, and the countless black, hispanic, Caribbean, and Asian street gangs.

Um, if you did do GTAirty South in Louisiana and Mississippi you couldn't have Mountains since there are none. Just wanted to clarify that.

By the way, I saw some Playstation mag today and the cover was GTA: Liberty City Stories.

I can't believe Helix doesn't want GTA: Fire Island.

I'm still waiting for Grand Theft Horsie. How much of a stretch is it to shoot a man off his horse for a quick ride?

If not that maybe an asian themed GTA with the Yakuza.
GTA: Moscow...more mobsters and thugs than you can shake a stick at. No scantily-clad women though, at least not outdoors.

Or GTA: Baghdad. Not a sexy locale but definitely dangerous.

*edit* I like the Hawaii idea...it has all the ingredients.

I would like to see good graphics in the next GTA.

Even in the Xbox version of San Andreas the textures and graphic quality was PISS POOR. It actually hindered my gaming experience because I kept seeing all these horrible backgrounds and shitty textures around CJ and the NPCs. I understand they went for quantity over quality of graphics, but jesus San andreas is tought to look at.
I'm in a game design program at my school and I actually wrote a small design doc for a GTA Baghdad.
Had screen shots and everything.
But when it comes to the next one I think they should take it back to liberty city and include upstate and atlantic city and all that, but set it in the 70's.
The soundtrack would be great and the cars would be dead cool. So far they have been riffing on the gangster genre, with every thing from scarface to Menace 2 Society. It seems that they could do a whole Superfly-Black Caesar thing and even some casino-goodfellas action thrown in.
The engine will be so advanced that it wont even be recognisable compared to part 3 and the whole city will seem fresh.
I don't know why people want to go back to Liberty City for? Why would you want to do the same city again instead of something different? If you want to do that then get 'Liberty City Stories' for the PSP.

The problem is what era and where to set it. All 3 games have taken place in a somewhat culture defining time (Although admitedly, GTA3 is somewhat less clear about this). The thing is, where do they go from here? I doubt they would do the 70s, although apart from having a great soundtrack it'll be a step back in terms of Vehicles and weapons.

There is wide speculation that they're going to do something completely different though, as according to Dan Houser, they picked the 3 cities as a homage to the PS1 game, and once GTA4 comes around they'll scrap the engine and make a new one for a new series of games. Although whether or not they go through with this remains to be seen.

It'll be a shame though that you want get to see the current GTA games on a next gen console. San Andreas would've looked fantastic on a PS3. Hell, it would've looked great on the XBox but instead they spent months obviously doing nothing to improve the game. It's nothing more than a lazy port with some slightly improved draw distance, everything else is just as jerky and horrible as it was on the PS2.

East Coast would be a waste. now GTA: ASIA would be awesome, drive around a hi-tec tokyo-like neon city, stealing hotted-up japanese performance vehicles, play as an up and coming triad, fight rival gangs, do jobs down the in the lower, more tropical countries, like a bangkok type area, smugglers, guys with machete's, go to hong kong's gritty underground, etc.

all that makes for an awesome game.
As for when...I'd love to see a near future take, simply because I'd love to see what the guys come up with. Think about it...part of the fun of GTA is seeing what suprises you can pull off (yes, I can take the street sweeper up the escalator and do a flip off the roof onto a gang member, then take off before I get caught). Think about what these guys could do with a little science fiction thrown into the mix.

The sick sense of humor would be priceless in this.

Taking the future idea..

GTA:Transmetropolitian. It has a big city, the mountains and woods and it has a wealth of characters you could work for. Jobs for Fred Christ? Oh yeah. You could have a political radio station where The City's Mayor and the Smiler could make speeches and you can hear Spider Jerusalem rant..

And Bowel disruptors!
If the PS3 disks are huge...

GTA: World

It'd be nice to have the option to travel the world. Setting it in modern times, again, but with London, Tokyo, New York, and LA style locations.
I once thought that an early 1900's version would be neat....then MAFIA came out.

But I was thinking one day: What would be a radical turn in the series?

Making the playable character a woman.

GTA hasn't delved into lots of crime worlds in the recent series: Yakuza, Russian Mobs, Mexican Drug Lords.
I think maybe a good direction to go would be not so much location as characters. How about multiple main characters to choose from at the start of each game? And, sure, make one a woman. That'd make for a very different experience than simply playing as the usual gang-banger.

And I'll echo sentiments for a return to Liberty City. Simply put, the first Liberty City was way too small - trick this environment out to REAL Big Apple size. That would rule.

Polar Bears vs. Penguins. Nice.
Polar bears don't live at the South Pole!!!
the next one should be set in London. not the photoreal, shitty gameplay, zero sense of humor London of the Getaway, but instead a concentrated Rockstar "version" of London.
also the hero of the game/main player voice should be Ray Winstone.
I think the main character should be an Asian cop in LA. This time, you fight for good, specifically those gang members who killed his brother or something. It should have better fight mechanics, but have almost no side-missions and be about an hour long.
Yeah, "True Crime" did sort of suck.

Fine.

GAY Polar Bears vs. Penguins.
I would lean toward an Asian GTA also for the next one. The seventies would really work for that because you could have the whole Bruce Lee/Enter The Dragon/Kung Fu Theater vibe going.

Either that or move slightly forward in time with a European GTA and go with the James Bond/Bourne vibe. Hi tech gadgets and so forth.

Or hell, just expand it and do the whole planet, with Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas as locations along with the other side of the world. The smelly geeks wouldn't leave their basements for months.

Or, fuck it. GTA: Mars
GTA: Tatooine!

In the grand tradition of Age Of Empires 2 mod Galactic Battlegrounds, we have the Star Wars version of GTA!

Work for Jabba the Hutt or Lady Valarian! Fly in a swoop gang or steal an AT-AT! Run over a moisture farm with a sandcrawler! Etc, etc, etc.

Either that or GTA: Coruscant or GTA: Nar Shaddaa.
I'd love to see GTA:Japan or similar with a Yakuza slant. Depending on the time period they could have Asuka and Kenji from GTA:3 and Woozie from SA popping up (Was he Chinese?).

I kinda have a feeling they may do something with a fictional Cuba/Jamaica/Haiti/Costa Rica thing, with a cartel vibe, that way you can tie in Vice City. I like the idea of having a few larger islands to go to.

But who knows! I know I'll play it whatever it turns out to be.
Somebody probably said this already, but...

A create your own character option at a even higher than Tiger Woods level and people should react to you uniquely even if they are story NPC's, Rockstar can pull this off.

Though i don't want it to go into MMORPG territory, the option of some kind of multiplayer should at least be available.

It should stay a story though, but the story should mold to the kind of character you create and are, kind of like Fable i guess.

Give us a fucking WALKMAN! So my music doesn't always stop when i get out of the car, it could have batteries that run out or whatever, that can be bought or found all over the world.

It should be a WORLD sized game, or nation sized, why not, what the fuck.

Keep it arcadey. That's the thing i love about GTA, because for all intensive purposes it is basically PAC-MAN.

I know it's cliche' or whatever, but please give me a MAX PAYNE slow mo dive, and likewise controls for shooting, but keep the San Andreas skill level uping, that stuff is cool and gives you something to work for, and look forward to.

Keep the little gingle after i successfully complete something (same reason as above).

Give us either a zombie mode, or make part of the game a zombie attack.

I'll think of more, i hope someone from Rockstar reads this.

Many true New Orleanians don't have heavy accents and the ones who do are closer to a New York accent, in a way, than anything else. However if they took it to the swamps and Mississippi....yeah those accents would be heavy. I do think a Dirty South/New Orleans game would be fucking awesome though.

And you're bitching about accents but you want to take it to Texas?

A Future GTA would be pretty damn cool.

Mexico City GTA.

Tornoto GTA. Everyone would be so polite.

We need to be able to purchase iPod's or the GTA equivalent of one. A gPod. Fuck it, just steal one from some kid in the game.

GTA: Petty Theft

Have loads of fun by snatching Honda H's and twinkies from the liquor store.

Hell, if Warren Ellis was into it, he could write the guy so it ties into the story about taking The Smiler down.

RockStar is doing a Old West Game, so you may get a wish. Might be good if they went with a Sergio Leone type flavor.
As far as GTA goes, I would go with London, and the GTA:East Coast sounds good.

The natural choice has to be Baghdad. It's much more cathartic to bust a cap in a vicious terrorist than a random street punk. Plus think of all the military vehicles and weapons you could use.

That seems more suited for the next iteration of Mercenaries than it does for the next GTA.
what's this about Rockstar doing an old west game, you don't mean Red Dead Revolver? (which already came out a while back)
Each GTA game has mentioned the city of the next game in the series (well, if you internally retcon his pager message from "Miami City" (which doesn't exist in the GTA series) to "Vice City".

Guessing, they'll do Carcer City next. Its a Detroit-style town mentioned a few times in the SA radio commercials.

They'll never do it, but I'd love to see a Complete Grand Theft Auto. All three cities, interconnected.
Rockstar has already made a game in Carcer city, called Manhunt.

Didn't know that - I never paid much attention to R*'s non-GTA games.
I'm kinda the opposite. I tend to like their games that aren't GTA. I like GTA games well enough, but find them pretty tiresome, good value if you have free months and no other games to play, i suffer from buying too many games and trying to catch up on each one. There's only so many times i can go on a drive-by before i reach for the power button.
A GTA: World would be next to impossible (at least in this decade), but a game where multiple cities around the world (and their immediate surroundings) are interconnected by airports would be feasible.
anyone looking for GTA Mexico might want to check out the game "Total Overdose" when it's released (I've only seen a trailer so far but it looked very Rockstarish)

Fazer, are you old enough to remember games before they had real "graphics"?

I'd be all for the future GTA, but the beauty part is that they could do almost anything with that engine (or an updated one). Old West? Dark Ages? Pirates? Zombies? They could make all those genres in a free-roaming, interactive environment. I love GTA, but someone needs to use that engine for more than just gangsters.
Anyone know how the City of the Dead game is?

I would love if that were a free-roaming game.
Considering the history of GTA, I think London is a strong possibility. Remember that GTA(1) had three levels: Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas, respectively. The expansion that followed this release was London: 1969.

A slightly futuristic GTA could be fun, in the same way that GTA2 was sort of retro-future. I definately agree with walkman/ipod sentiments.
Go back to the East Coast. Do the San Andreas thing, with multiple cities and countryside, because whoever said there's a good range of suburban communities in the East hit the nail on the head. I like the idea of making the main character a woman, too. And yeah, for god's sake, upgrade the graphics some. I thought Vice City looked pretty great on XBox, but there's no denying that San Andreas is headache-inducing.
