Doom monster appreciation thread

Thread Starter

Some of the most inspired and downright cool enemy design in video games.

No offense, but I've always felt the monsters in Doom were pretty generic and uninteresting - especially those in Doom III. The first two games are fun though, and I appreciate what they did for gaming in general.

C'mon man - you gotta like the Imps.

What's weird is, looking at that picture, I immediately remembered that it's name is Cacodemon.

A Cacodemon. Just the name alone should begin and end this thread.

Inspired? Not even close. Cool? Only if you're a 14 year old metal fan.

Especially since I'm 90% sure it's almost an exact lift of a Dungeons and Dragons monster (which are mostly inspired by myths and stuff in the first place, aren't they?).

NOT the Beholder (the one with all the extra eyes), mind you, but another similar one that looks, again, almost EXACTLY like the one from Doom.

Also, I've read books mentioning cacodemons that I'm pretty sure were written before Doom was even thought of, so it's not like any credit can be given to the name.

Sorry to assist in the deflation of your thread, Werbal.

As with so many other aspects, Half-Life is better.

Damn, that does look like a Cacodemon. . .

Are you being sarcastic? I can't tell, but if you are being sarcastic the upside down head with the spider legs is basically a lift from the Thing.

Yeah, that's not particularly inspired.

Considering we've had 30 plus years of really good sci-fi and fantasy books, movies and video games, the odds of something being truly original is going to be slim. I would think by this point, whatever demon or alien or whatever is going to have elements from at least a half-dozen previous creatiions.

That being said I loved the giant scorpions with chaingun hands in Serious Sam. Science is fun!

Oh that's a given, but that fact also makes it a given that most things are not very inspired, especially not Doom's monsters. The fly-babies were kinda neat tho.
