Theron Benson: My name is Theron Benson; I am an Animator currently working for FASA Studios at Microsoft Game Studios.

I have worked on many projects, ranging from PC games to console, FPS to role-playing. Right now, I am animating for an Xbox 2 project called Shadowrun. It's a first-person shooter based on an old paper RPG of the same name from a couple decades ago.
The Genesis version of Shadowrun remains one of the best games I ever played. The bad part of this revelation is contained in the words "first person shooter". If it's an FPS in the same way that Deus Ex is an FPS, then we may be okay, but I want a real RPG. I want decking and an updated version of the kickass and addictive cybercombat system.

And now I need to find a cheap Genesis + Shadowrun cart on ebay...

If this is a Shadowrun game in more than name only, then I am all for it. If it's just somehow cashing in on a title that honestly only the diehards remember, then that's lame. I might be wrong about the diehard thing, but Shadowrun had kind of a loyal cult following, similar to games like Ikaruga and River City Ransom. And it was awesome... Oh my indeed.
First Person Shooter? EEK. I think Microsoft may just getting another FPS in case Bungie's done with Halo after 3 and Perfect Dark Zero turns out to be shitty(quite possible sadly). Shadowrun had a WHOLE LOT of shooting, but was never FPS material. And I would have said that before I knew what a FPS was.

edit- Good link eyeball kid. Yet another reason Nick has good taste. Hehe. I never knew about the Genesis version, how did that stack up? I mentioned it to a friend and he said it was a "brother out for revenge" type story, and he said it also kicked ass.
I got horribly stuck in the SNES version and never beat it. It was a section in the bowels of a huge oil tanker or something that was docked(I don't even know if I was anywhere near the end). There was a room where I got the living shit shot out of me no matter what I did, and thus, I never beat it. I found out later that I had to be invisible or something but by that time I no longer had the game. I need to track it down, especially now that my SNES is hooked back up.
I think if a new Shadowrun does see the light of day people are going to accuse it of being a Matrix rip-off. Sad but probably true. Still, FPS or not, I hope this pans out.

Holy crap. Just recently I was playing my genesis cart, lamenting that this incredible, incredible game would never get another version.

The SNES version ain't too shabby either, but the genesis one is a fucking masterpiece. Fuck GTA....shadowrun was the first game that got me so immersed in it that I didn't care about the plot. Just so much to do....

Can't wait for this.

See, I never played the SNES version, and from everything I've seen and heard, the fanbases for the two versions usually don't cross over. Those who like the SNES version feel that the Genesis version has sub-par graphics and is too difficult/too much of a level grind, while fans of the Genesis version may say that the SNES version is shallow or watered down.

All I know is that I played the Genesis version for uncounted hours and loved every minute.

I liked the SNES version, it was first and fun and all, but the Genesis version blew it out of the water. You could play it all kinds of ways, non linear, just doing shadowruns, whatever you wanted. You could also play around in cyberspace all day, hacking like there was no tomorrow. But yes, I did enjoy both versions, just one was profoundly better. Please don't let a new version be just another standard FPS.

Would someone mind filling me in as to what "Shadowrun" was about. I remember it being a big deal when it came to the Genesis and SNES. If it's anything like "Deus Ex" then I'm definitely picking this up.

I still have my SNES. I wonder how difficult it would be to track down a copy.

Shadowrun was a cyberpunk universe...only magic had come back in the world when the Mayan Calendar eneded, so you have cyborg trolls running along side you, as a dwarf rigger controls the vehicles with her mind and you're casting spells with one hand, shooting with another, and dragons are playing machievellian games with megacorporations.

It's actually linked to Earthdawn, as well...Earthdawn was the first stage of earth, ours is the second, and Shadowrun is the third.

Two board members...well, ex-board members...apparently worked for FASA in the Shadowrun universe: Lady Anaka and Coyote, before FASA disengrated. Earthdawn went on to Living Room Games, I'm not sure who Shadowrun went onto, but it's still publishing as well.

I think I would love any game set in the shadowrun universe. It's just so interesting: sci-fi-fantasy.
