Resident Evil 5 announced - Page 2

The setting comes from the game developers wanting to give it the same feel as the movie Black Hawk Down, kind of Generic Somalia (to follow on from Resident Evil 4's undisclosed Spanish speaking European village). As bad an idea as it might have been in terms of future controversy avoidance, I do think it would be cool to play a zombie killing video game set in a really troubled part of the world. Somewhere that feels "recent", not boring and ancient.

HOLY SHIT.

He's quicker, stronger, and more acrobatic, and that's important, since RE5's enemies have also evolved. Redfield will be dealing with large swarms of enemies, rather than just one or two, so we've given him several new abilities. He can climb on top of a zombie's shoulders and 'crowd hop' above the fray, and he has a new whirlwind attack that temporarily disables surrounding enemies. If things get really intense, he can use his new Watermelon Launcher, which fires a juicy melon to distract his enemies- the new zombies will all swarm in on the target melon, giving Redfield a chance to escape. This will really open up gameplay possibilities and take RE5 to the next level.
I take it all back. This game has been Fokkered.

Classy.

It's not whether or not the game is in fact racist, it's whether or not mainstream media decides to do a story on it and the developers have to deal with the hue and cry after people see some of the choice cuts of the game.

Who knows if it will even register in the mainstream, some things go pop and others never even whimper. But if it does it will make Vice City's "Kill the Haitians" kerfuffle seem like a, well a kerfuffle by comparison. That's just the price you pay when graphics get more and more realistic and the public by and large really doesn't appreciate that there's more to a video game than the ten second clip of carnage they'll be shown in an outraged news story.

Few new things to look at:

Seems to be a little more variation in baddie skin colour now. Wonder why?

Now that's a fucking trailer! This just shot to the top of my "most anticipated game evah" list.

Could we also please get a release of RE4 with even slightly upgraded graphics on the 360? Please?

Holy shit, you have emotions.

Also, yeah the trailer was fucking awesome. Loved seeing the return of the chainsaw bastards too.
Okay, that was great. Now I care about this game.

It's not enough I have to hear that all the time from my co-workers, friends, and family? Now you have to pile on? *sniff*

I got chills.

The odd thing is that Capcom could have headed all the racism talk (which they had to have expected when they conceived of the thing) off at the pass if they'd just made the hero black as well. They could still have had their classic characters doing support work, and it would have saved them some headache.

Umm.....Greg....heroes aren't black. Even your preschoolers know that!

/end sarcasm.

Actually, has there ever been a black protagonist in any Japanese video game, ever? I can't think of any.
Come to think of it, neither can I. I can't think of any in anime or manga, either. Then again, I would imagine that not very many Japanese people know any black people, so it isn't something they think about.
Afro Samurai?
Only character I can think of is the african woman in Street Fighter III. As well as Balrog of course.

Edit: Also Vanessa in Virtua Fighter series, but these are more like playable characters than protaganists.
Well, Beret in FF7 is as big as I can think of.

So, there's one? The collective video game geekery of CHUD can come up with one black protagonist (I don't think fighting characters qualify)? Methinks there's a bit of a track record here.

**I'm not that familiar with FFVII, but I seem to recall that the main character/hero/protagonist was a guy named Cloud, who had a really big sword. I looked up Barrett. He's kind of stretching the definition of "protagonist", isn't he? I think the count should go back to zero.
Blade. He had a couple of games I believe. Technically based off the movies. Still, he was black.

Made by Japanese companies?
There's a great looking fluidity to the movement/combat in that trailer that looks really good.

Wish they could manage to avoid an insanely convulted and bad storyline. Not that I know RE5's storyline mind you but... come on. It is Capcom we're talking about here.
One of the playable characters in Killer 7 was black.

Sorry, I should have pointed out that he wasn't the protagonist. But he is part of your party.

I'm fairly interested in the premise of this RE. The last one, while loving the gameplay and graphics, still felt like an episode of 24 by saving the President's daughter.
24 episode it may be but still a helluva great looking game.
I like how you can actually see the weapons that he's carrying on his back. I also wonder if you'll be able to fight of the chainsaw guy with that machete that he has.

Interview with the producers of RE5 coming on Tuesday.

Yes, I asked the race question. And at a press event with about 60 press people from the US and Europe, apparently I was one of very few who did. Unfortunately, it was part of a (small) roundtable and the answers were all passed through a translator, so it's not the best conversation.
There was a dude named Don who helped you out in the forgotten classic, Way of the Samurai. He had an afro (hence, we referred to him as 'Afro Don') and lived under a bridge. That game was awesome: like a choose your own adventure video game with wacky samurai hijinx. I recommend it to all.
RE5 looks amazing... all this racism talk is lame, the game is made by a Japanese company. They're not as hung up on the whole race thing as we Americans are.

Most Asian countries are homogenous. The fact that the black "zombies" could be construed as racist probably never entered their minds. They didn't think setting RE4 in Europe would be racist to Spanish people, did they? So why would they think that for RE5? Racism against blacks was never a part of their history, so why would they give a rat's a$$? If the US media (or African Americans for that matter) has an issue with it, that's their problem.

Like the producer said, RE5 was inspired by BLACK HAWK DOWN.
The Japanese aren't aware of racism? That's going to come as quite a surprise to the Chinese.
From my experience racism against blacks is pretty pervasive in Asia... but in the "We're not going to hire you because you scare us/we don't trust you" vein, not the "I'd like to kill those niggers" one.
A friend once recommended a manga to me. A few issues in, a flashback occurs to our hero's time with a mercenary band. One of the soldiers is a black man. I wondered how they were going to portray him. Sure enough, childhood trauma for the main character ensued within a few dozen pages.
Just because I can, I like laboring under the delusion that Seth from Lost Odyssey's a fair skinned black woman.
I never cared for the RE series, but a game that lets me kill mobs of darkies with a machete or a machine gun as a lily white hero of the people?!?

Sold.
omgomgomg

I can't wait to kill black zombies with a machete

(I hope some crazy-ass anti-RE5 zombie's rights campaign uses this quote as ammunition against the game.)
The first part of your post goes really well with your avatar, Jake.
That bit where you're walking backwards out through a dark tunnel shooting at dozens of glowing eyes closing in on you? Nightmares.
Yeah, this game looks like it's going to have plenty of "piss your pants" moments. In the sunlight too, for chrissakes.

Nice try. I'm Korean so I'm all familiar with the Japanese fukk yus to the Chinese.

I was referring to any Japanese historical racism against blacks. It's not a part of their society, so they have no obligation to tip toe around the matter like us westerners.
Nobody has that obligation, including us westerners. That doesn't mean they won't take shit for it, deserved or not.
Sigh.... who gives a shit that they're black? If the main character was wearing a pointy white hat and the name of the game was K Cubed then there'd be a problem. Last game had you killing a mix of Spaniards or some former Soviet Union territory(not actually sure what nationality they were) , the whole point being that's a Resident Evil game which has you killing zombies and other messed up creatures.
Jesus, I can't believe nobody's brought up how hard this game looks already. I'm having nightmares about somehow having to kill my way through those enormous crowds of creepy fucks let alone when those tentacled sprouting freaks start showing up. I was hoping I was done with those after 4.

Now what's this about racism? I wasn't paying attention.
Maybe they'll make the next one about illegal aliens turning into zombies, then I can rub my swastika nipple tattoos while playing the best white supremacist fantasy ever.
I see a whole franchise of racist zombie games. Maybe in one, you can be in the deep south, and all the black people have turned into undead, and the only way to kill them is to hang them. That would sell a lot of XBoxes in Alabama.
Maybe Capcom has chosen a new direction, and we should expect RE: Haiti, RE: Compton, and RE: NBA over the next few years.

There are Wolfenstein and Doom mods to this effect floating out there on the interwebs. Except the black people aren't zombies yet.

No there isn't. Is there?

That'd only sell as a Wii version with motion controls.

Sad but true. I don't have any links or anything but I've been to a couple seminars where these games get brought up. I guess there are racist nerds, like worse than the douches you encounter on XBL.
Well, the next time I am on vacation and am confronted by a swarm of the walking dead, I will be sure to let them consume me as a way of not offending anyone.
