Hilarious or unnecessary? (Devil's Rejects)

So. As I mentioned in my review, I laughed hysterically at a moment of violence in Devil's Rejects but was pretty much alone in my amusement. If you've seen the movie, I'm curious what you thought.

So, when poor Mrs. Banjo is running from the hotel and gets hit by the truck...funny or just gratuitous and/or unnecessary?

I think it was both hilarious and unnecessary at the same time. The scene was not needed, but I'll live with it. In a way it kind of took you out of the sadistic moment with its absurdity.

Enjoyed the film quite a bit by the way.

Quite possibly the funniest scene in the whole movie...

Not that this movie was big on comedy, but that sceene made me just about sputter my cola out my nostrils. I think its because it was so unexpected and just so *there* when it happened. I have to admit, it really made me laugh out loud.

The other line that made me die was "F*ck Groucho!"

I thougth that yes, it might have been unnecessary, but hell, if they want to have people get hit by movie vehicles of any sort, i am so in. I love to see people get hit by things. The bus in Final Destination was pretty much the same thing as this. I personally like the fact that after it happened, they had a scene showing the remains on the road. Generally a movie would show someone get hit, show the blood spray and move on. Kudos to Zombie for setting up an entire shot of the road and having characters discuss the incident.

a fave line of mine was "the next thing to come out of your mouth better be some Mark Twain shit cause its going to be etched on your fucking grave stone". I think that one made me laugh the most.

I also laughed at the girl getting hit because I knew it was coming and it looked funny, I laughed at the aftermath of the truck hit because it was disturbing and the guy in the seat next to me was like 'holy shit'.

That Mark Twain line was great also, thanks for reminding me NadaTodd, laughed at that too.

I laughed when the guy got shot in the head in the hotel room, and the other guy puked, because it was disturbing and quick.

I laughed when the sheriff pulled the knife out of the mom, because it was disturbing, and hardcore.

I'm glad that Zombie made what appears to be, the movie he wanted to make (it may come out later on the dvd commentary that he wanted to do even more though), and the more I think about it the more I like it.

I found myself laughing at much of the violence, just due to the absurdity of it all. It wasn't even that I didn't lke it, cuz I did, I just couldn't help bursting out in laughter.

*possible spoilers*

I was annoyed with most of the film, but that part in particular really irked me.

First off, I was a bit confused by the beginning of that scene, it didn't look like she was tied up in the motel room, was she hanging from a hook or something on the door? If so, her hands were free so she could have gotten down. If she could have run out of the motel before then why did she stay until the maid came?

And also, why didn't she take the mask off? If she was so incredibly horrified by it wouldn't that be the first thing she would do? I can forgive her running into traffic because she was hysterical but it looks like the mask just stayed on because Zombie thought it would be a cool iconic image.

Can anyone clear this up for me? I'd like to believe I missed something, but right now it seems too stupid and illogical to be taken seriously.

I don't know Zombie's reasoning, but if I had been tortured and couldn't know for sure that my torturer was gone, I wouldn't move.

I honestly can't remember whether or not she was tied, though.

Your explanation rings true for me.

the only thing i took from her keeping the mask on was the point you made about running into traffic, she was hysterical and not thinking at all. i think the approach was, if you were tied up in a hotel room where everyone you knew was just killed in front of you, or you were wearing proof that a loved one was dead, you would lose your mind as well, and your actions would be just as off the charts. I think she was just freaking out and was lost in the moment.

The part about her hands being tied, i think she was bound up, but then the maid was underneath her, allowing Ms. Banjo to use the maid as some sort of leverage to get herself down. I think that being dangled and not being able to get down also added to the hysterical nature that she was left in.

Then again, i could be wrong about the whole thing. Just my 2 cents, if it's even worth that much.

Don't worry about being wrong. There's nothing to explain about that scene beyond what happened on screen.

Maybe she was knocked out and didn't wake until the maid opened the door that she was hung from.

On the subject of the mask, I think that either she was hysterical like everyone said or maybe she had been wearing it so long that she forgot all about it.

i think it was a combination of being knocked out and utterly hysterical

i seem to be the only one in my group of friends that found it hilarious that he was wearing the guy's face

also, why the hell did tiny walk back into the house?

I wasn't uneccessary as it was the finale to the best scene in the whole film. If she'd have survived instead that wouldn't be half as good would it. I thought it was funny that she was runing with the mask on and the maid was shitting herself. I dunno why she didn't take the mask off though but I think she got run over because she couldn't see as clearly and was running away. It made me laugh too.

I didn't laugh. I yawned.

I saw it as a parody of the end of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
This woman survives a heinous ordeal and escapes the scene of the crime. But instead of being rescued by the truck driver, she gets creamed.

I have an unhealthy love of this movie. It's like Zombie took his goofy characters from HoATC and removed them from their familiar environment. In the harsh light of day they loose all their humor and are grotesque monsters wandering the real world.
As for Tiny, I guess he saw that it was all over. His home was destroyed and there was no place for him in the outside world.

I'd also like to add that I loved the character actor who led the band at the motel. His dim little performance was just real. The way he mutters "Don't hurt her." was perfect.

I was glad to see Geoffrey Lewis in this. He's got one of those distinct faces and his expressions in this were more painful than any of the victims who screamed their way to death.

I've never seen CORPSES but this was a really good flick. It's not so much scary as it is unsettling, though not unsettling enough to prevent me from cracking up more than a few moments. Spaulding's dream and sudden wake up was a riot, as was the film critic.

I've heard a lot of people say they were turned off by William Forsythe in this one but he was exactly what this film needed to go up against the family. Plus , casting Danny Trejo and Diamond Dallas Page as a duo of bounty hunters is all kinds of epic. Great soundtrack also.

I'm probably more inclined to watch CORPSES now than I was previously was, but I'm really looking forward to whatever Zombie directs next.

Oh come on, Jacob. You could take random moronic statements from any forum on CHUD and take that stance. For example, the crying at video games one.
