X-Box Baseball

I bought 2k5 Baseball over the weekend, and it seems like it could be a fun game, if I could (a) figure out how to pitch, or (b) figure out how to change the game's settings so pitching is easier. If I just can't get the hang of it, should I switch to MLB? I'm looking for an arcade-type baseball game, not an in-depth sim. I'm not going to manage teams, look at stats, or do any of that. I just want to swing at some baseballs and have a good time.

MLB is PS2-only. Your only other choice is MVP.

Frank, just keep paintin' the corners, and be sure to stop those two intersecting lines inside the circle for an accurate throw. The longer you hold down the button, the smaller that circle becomes, so don't try to throw heat all the time. And, of course, pitch to your pitcher's strengths...

If anything, I think the pitching is a little too forgiving. I get over a dozen strike outs most games. There are tons of difficulty settings that you can adjust in the options menus, too.

How do I stop those intersecting lines? The manual doesn't say, so I've been trying to figure it out. I use the analog stick to aim, then press the appropriate button, then those lines come up and I can't find any explanation of how to control them. The don't move with the analog stick. Am I supposed to watch the lines move, then press the button again if (I don't recall if it's when) they intersect over the target?

As you can imagine, I spent a frustrating hour with zero pitching control, throwing meatball after meatball until the AI team was up by something like 30 runs. Hence, my plaintive cry for help.

You know what would've made this game really great? A spring training option, where you can practice batting, pitching, & fielding until you get the hang of it.

The intersecting lines set horizontal and vertical accuracy. So tap to select the location, then tap again to set the horizontal line and once more to set the vertical. To begin with, you'll want to set the point on both lines right over the location target you've selected. Eventually, you can 'miss' those second and third taps to place the ball somewhere else if you're playing against another human.

Coming from somebody who has little love for EA or sports, let alone baseball, I'll vouch for MVP.

If for no other reason than the fact that, despite not having much interest in baseball at that point (a fact that, admittedly, is starting to change thanks to me buying the game), I was still able to pick it up, play, and get hooked in all of 20 minutes without an instruction manual, even.

And yeah, pitching is one button, hold till it's a strong as you want it, press again when the cursor's in the green. Dirt simple.

Course, again, I wouldn't know if that's a good thing or not. But it is fun.

Thanks, Russ. I wish they'd put that in the manual. So, to put on the heat, you hold down the appropriate button for a while initially, then release at some point and tap-tap after that?

Looking forward to giving this game another go tonight,
Alex

I know there's a ton of EA hate around these parts (much of it deserved), but MVP is solid. I think you'd probably like it, Frank.

I'll give 2k5 another go tonight. If, after learning how to pitch, I'm still dissatisfied, I'll give MVP a go. Thanks for your help, gents.

Microsoft picked up the rights to High Heat Baseball when 3D0 folded, but they seem to be doing nothing with it,sadly. That was easily the best baseball sim out there.

Ok, I've got the pitching down. Now, all I have to do is figure out how to aim my swings, & I'll be somebody. I had a great time with this game last night - thanks for your help, friends!

I'm really having fun with this game now. I have the hang of pitching, but I'm still working on my swing. I tend to fly out a lot. Still, this is a great game.

Here's a question: are there any MLB games that update stats and standings as the real-life season goes on? Speaking of the real world, this game has really sparked my 5-yr-old's interest in baseball. A typical afternoon now consists of an hour of batting practice in the backyard, followed by half an hour of X-Box baseball in the basement. Fatherhood rocks.

No Frank I don't have X-Box Live so I update the rosters myself. Yahoo sports does a nice job with the rosters and depth charts check that out.

Cant speak for the others, but there's a big ass XBox Live roster update coming for MVP in the very near future.
