Burnout: Revenge

It's coming out in September, but anyone anxious for a taste of the new Burnout should get their asses to Best Buy to pick up a free demo disk.

I got mine. Impressions to come later.
"Free" free or "free with purchase" free?

Free free free free free.

let us know if its as painfully slow as Burnout 3 on the playstation 2.

What, the loading? Yeah, the loading's a bit slow (might be the blue-disk the demo comes on), but the game runs blisteringly fast with some cool effects. It almost feels faster than Burnout 3, if such a thing's possible.
I don't suppose there's an XBOX demo disc, is there? That would sure be nice.

There should be, according to Joystiq.com

I'm kinda worried about this game, the cool thing about the last burnouts was that each one was a drastic improvement in every way, though this just looks exactly like burnout 3 with gritty backgrounds, and that is disappointing, its pretty much what we're going to have to expect from EA, until the next gen version comes out, and then each subsequent sequel will look just like it.

I didn't see any demos at my Best Buy, but they had one loaded into their Xbox display. Being able to hit non-racer traffic to block your opponents and using crashbreakers in the race adds much more to the game than I thought it would. It's a tiny wrinkle that greatly changes your strategies. I also really liked the tiered level design, having ramps, raised areas, and side streets to slip down. These features seem to be folded into the game so seamlessly that it feels like they've always been a part of the series.
I wonder why they didn't just hold onto this title for the next-gen consoles.

Despite that, I will be checking my area BEST BUYS for an Xbox demo.

why do that when you can make one now, and later for next-gen.

Because thats what EA do, they will treat this like a typical sports game, a new one each year, dont be surprised if they end up bringing out Burnout 2007.

And THAT would be the drastic difference between 3 & 4...that's alot more coding in there just to do that, and it really DOES change how the game plays. (There's another thread in here that has a link to a huge preview story on it from months ago. I love this series.)
Managed to pick it up this weekend...it's only one track and a trailer (They compare the new crash mode to golf), but that track is fun as hell. Unlike the last game, there are multiple paths you can take on the track (including airborne), meaning that although there's just one track on the demo, there's fun to be had trying to find all the paths on that one track.

Then there's ability to use traffic to take out opponents.....
I wish there was more than one track on the demo but it is pretty fun. Incorporating the crashbreaker into the race is awesome.
Had planned to pick this up when it was released in September, but it's coming for the 360 early next year, so I'm probably gonna hold out (probably...)

Anyone else thinking the same? If you're gonna get a 360, that is.

I can't wait for a game this great, in this great franchise, I'm getting it on regular Xbox, and then I'll just trade it in later and get it on 360.

I hope those bastards at my Best Buy still have a demo for me!

Is it a playable demo?
Yep, but it's only one track.

Is there going to be any dif in the 360 version? Did you see a press release?
Those bastards at Best Buy didn't have anymore demos when I got there! The dickhead employee said that the same demo is available on Madden 06. Is that true?

Even if it is I'm not buying Madden 06 just for the demo.

The demo is supposed to be in the next OXM magazine, so I'll just have to wait for that issue to appear in my mailbox.

IGN's review is up. 8.9. In case you're wondering, Burnout 3 got a 9.4.

http://xbox.ign.com/articles/649/649286p1.html

Short version: The new gameplay elements (using cars as weapons, Crashbreaker during races) screw with perfection. I had a bad feeling this was gonna happen judging from the demo.

Luckily, everything else got tweaked for the better. Graphics are more detailed, the track design is crazier than before, the crash junctions aren't just "aim for the x4" exercises anymore, XBox Live portion takes a few vital cues from Halo 2 (ELO ranking, the party system), and the game's soundtrack isn't a total affront to God like last time (regardless, I've seen the full tracklist....it *is* an improvement, but the second Yellowcard, Unwritten Law, and Thrice stay the fuck out of my XBox altogether is the second I'll turn off the custom soundtrack). And top it all off, the announcer is gone. Amen.

It's not so much a step backward as it is a step forward where you trip over a rock, or the homeless.

Also, 9.1 on Gamespot:

Sounds good to me.
Finally got my hands on this thing. $23 after trading in Fable, The Halo 2 Map Pack, Sonic Heroes, Devil May Cry 3, and Dragonball Z Budokai 3(yep...I'm done with it already.).

First off, CRAPPIEST MANUAL EVER. 6 pages is a pamphlet, not an instruction booklet.

The reviews were more or less right. I haven't gone on Live with this yet, but so far, checking traffic makes driving on the right side of the road too easy. Sure, you get no boost that way, but, still, too easy.

They also didn't get rid of the annoying as fuck sun glare. The stages thus far haven't been packed with traffic on the opposite direction yet, but it's early...and it's gonna become a problem again, I know it.

The soundtrack--DEFINITE improvement. Matter of fact, I might even call it ::gasp!:: listenable. Mostly hard rock and electronica, with a few, expected, weak spots (Thrice, Finch, etc) Still, it mostly fits. For once, I'm actually wishing there was a way to mix my custom soundtrack with the EA stuff.

The once unskippable first-time-playing demos are now skippable. And the new female announcer isn't a total douche like before.

Crash Junctions--Nice. You can pick your cars on any junction now, restarting it isn't such a pain in the ass, and the design is a thing of beauty. There's canyons to be jumped, multiple levels with their own set of cars, and checking traffic works MUCH better here than in races. And being able to control the camera is a godsend, though it's not as practically done as I was hoping (the right thumbstick is still sadly not utilized)

Races--Same as always. the multiple routes make things extremely interesting, though. The takedown camera is a lot more cinematic this time around, which makes for some extremely cool moments while taking down opponents (one guy I took down went flying over me, the camera followed my car from the front, looking backward as the guy's car hit a lamppost in the air)

For now, that is all.
The biggest improvement is the track design. It's far better than Takedown, and it completely overshadows the other additions. Checking same-way traffic has taken some of the danger out of the races, but the increase of other obstacles seems to have made up for it. And I like the numerous big air opportunities and side paths. The AI seems improved because alot of my old tricks aren't working. The only drawbacks so far are that traffic attack is a total throw-away and the new menu/interface is too damn busy for its own good.

Totally agree, you are spot on.

The new tracks are amazing, shortcuts are beneficial while at the same time dangerous; as are jumps.

Checking same way traffic is great because it makes every event look like the bridge scene in Bad Boys 2, if you choose to smack traffic around.

I love that the game is more cinematic.

Vertical takedowns are orgasmic.

Though the interface design is somehow more confusing, like you said too busy, but we'll get used to it.

The traffic attack is throw away, but I like trying to see how long I can last and how many cars I can rack up.
Seems like its not so much leagues better as it is more "different."

I'd expect we'll see some serious debate online as to which is better - REVENGE or BURNOUT 3.
Damnit, I can't afford to get this now, and my free rental coupon at Hollywood Video would only do me any good if they had the game yet.

I'm liable to be a tad biased as to which is better, as the fact that non-race cars= death bothered me in the last game. I don't care about game balance (as long as it's not TOO easy) , I want to have fun knocking traffic around.
Did they include the ability to take out regular traffic in LEGENDS also?
Legends plays almost identically to Burnout 3, so there's no checking traffic or crashbreakers in the races.

Had a few friends over and played a few rounds of Crash Tour and all I can say is "fucking awesome". Seriously, Crash Tour is going to be the choice 'drink and play with friends' game for awhile. I need to unlock more crash courses first, but I can tell this game's going to be coming out a lot during get-togethers.
Managed to trade enough games to get this.

Oh, this is fun.....

Damn, I forgot about how bad the trade-in values are at game stores. Some call it a deal I guess, I call it anal rape. If you can stand to wait a little longer, I suggest you go with ebay next time. I'm guessing you could have paid for Burnout in full by selling those, and even covered tax! I'm sure you know all this already, so I should just shut up.

I am looking forward to playing this, although I'll probably end up just renting it until the price drops. If you couldn't tell from my previous paragraph, I'm a cheap bastard(or is it thrifty?). Either way, I'm still not done unlocking everything in Takedown, and I love the shit out of that game.

I'm actually more excited about Criterion's other new game, Black. I'm a FPS guy at heart anyway, but the video of that sucker in motion on IGN had me drooling(and it's the ps2 version even!).
EBay and I are still not on speaking terms. It's the only reason I'd let Devil May Cry go for less than $25. The rest, though, 5 bucks a pop seems about right. And I wanted this game just that bad.

Either way....after spending a few more hours with this thing....oh yeah....all bad feelings gone. I'm just straight up addicted again.
Note: Game Stop will give you a 10 buck bonus for trading in any BurnOut title (on top of the value of the game.), and currently has a 40% bonus for card holders.

So I got a card, which comes to a free mag subscription, and the game for 10 bucks, after trading in games I never play.
I got this from Sleepless and this is one fantastic crash fest! Played it for the first time last night and I'm looking forward to gettign back to it.
The last Burnout got played in the background pretty constantly at the 4-day New Years party...people who never played games had a blast with it. Pretty sure the same thing will happen here with Revenge.
so i finally picked this game up...

WOW. Fucking great game. Best controls in an arcade racer ever.

More importantly, its fun to play, very fun to play. A lot of unlockables in the game too.

The crash mode is insane. Some of the level setups just put a huge smile on my face.

Criterion is really peaking with the work they are putting out there these past 2-3 years.
Word to the wise....t's intelligence on any game, but more important here: Do NOT go online until you finish single player.

You're going nowhere in races without at least a 205 mph car. And people who have to ask "What's this track" in Crash are no one's friend.

Also, if you're just getting started (read: you have a 50/50 rating), and you get kicked out of a room full of 20s and 30s? Don't take it personal.

the hot dogs are better...

I forgot to add to my god damned cryptic message that I've got some clips shared for 360's Revenge. So if you're in my small friends list who received that bugger and thought - okay, that guys a tool - you'd be right.

Taking some time adjusting to the game. Control is much more smoother and precise than the speedfest orgy of the previous gen version. The enemy feels like it's harder to take down. It doesn't let you really import your own custom soundtrack (you use the guide button to play external music - which is bs). I actually miss the golf swing (and audience cheer) of the old game in crash mode. And damn that fucker is pretty...
It's also severely fucking with online play in the original version.

Way to support your customers, EA.
Brittlebones (skeletonframes)...your clip needs to be in the top 20. There's car hopping - and then there's your clip.

nifty.

Picked this up on release day, and I'm surprised at the little differences between it and the regular X-box version. I find the 360 version a little harder and a little darker. It's still awesome and I'm glad I waited, though...just been hard to find time to play it since Fight Night and GRAW came out around the same time.

Yeah I wonder if they made the right decision to release it on the same day as GRAW.

However i'm quite happy with the game....it's definatly harder than the original box version....but It's definatly my favorite game right now.....that is until Blazing angels comes out.
